Movie Ratings and Reviews

Real Steel
Real Steel(2011)

Incredibly predictable

Lee Daniels' The Butler

There are some pretty major tonal inconsistencies, parts where I felt it should've been much more serious instead of settling for joke-y. On the other hand, the film beautifully displays the different perspectives of each generation during the civil rights movement, there's a lot to get out of this movie.

The World's End

Perfect medley of everything you loved about Shaun of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz. I was so excited to see this, and wasn't disappointed. It has Edgar Wright's personal touches throughout the entire movie- something I really needed to see and enjoyed immensely. It's witty, it's timed perfectly, and the characters are wonderfully developed. This is going down as one of my favorites.

Pineapple Express

I wanted to love this movie because it essentially has my dream cast, but it's a little too slow-moving for me, and isn't nearly as funny as the stars other movies. If I recommended it, it would be for James Franco's endearing performance.

Jackass 3.5
Jackass 3.5(2011)

Feels like you're watching the blooper reel- there's just not that much content.

A Serbian Film

Unlike human centipede II and some of the later saw movies, this is not 100% senseless gore. It is shocking, over the top, horrifying, and it will test the limits of what you are willing to let yourself watch, but it is not nonsensical. I'll compare it to the human centipede II (THCII), because I think it is the easiest to compare with. Whereas THCII seems to chase violence for violence sake, this film does so to intensify the story, and the connection with the main character, who, unlike the main character in THCII, is relatable. A serbian film has just a bit more depth to it than does the human centipede. It is not a plotless mess. It is however, very hard to watch.

Four Christmases

They lost me from the very beginning.

Grown Ups 2
Grown Ups 2(2013)

It doesn't play out like a movie; it feels much more like a sloppy collection of gags.

New Year's Eve

Nothing special here.

The Wolverine

The love interest felt weak and forced, and many of the characters were too underdeveloped to make for a good movie. If you've seen the trailer, you've seen the movie, essentially.

The Brothers Bloom

Gets to be a bore 3/4 of the way through, but it's clever, and it's quite warmhearted.

The Campaign
The Campaign(2012)

If you've seen any other Will Ferrell or Zach Galifinakis movies, then you'll know what to expect before popping this movie in. Not to say that it's completely predictable, but the humor doesn't go into what's-going-on territory. Zach G. surprisingly doesn't play a dummy in this movie (you may disagree) and his character is really pretty admirable despite the political shenanigans back and forth. This movie avoids making fun of itself and success in making fun of what it was intended to make fun of- politics.

Shark Tale
Shark Tale(2004)

Has a valid, reasonable plot, and isn't completely ridiculous along the way. In fact, it was pretty funny. Maybe not as deep as the setting, but funny.

You'll know before you even watch it if you'll like it or not just based on the trailer. If this is your comedy- it is GREAT, there are some really genuinely funny bits, but if raunchy over-the-top shock humor isn't your thing, skip to the next comedy.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

The songs are very repetitive, but the rest of the film is so outrageous that they shouldn't have you bored in your chair.

The Power of One

It's a pretty powerful movie if you don't think too hard about it.

The Losers
The Losers(2010)

It's funny every now and then, but overall it's nothing you haven't seen before. Might as well just watch the trailer- that's where all the good stuff is.

The Notebook
The Notebook(2004)

I will say that it is ridiculous to expect an audience to not see the narratives crossing from scene one, but even so, this was surprisingly true to the feelings of "first love" up until Gosling gets deployed. After that, it's a bit cliche, but not to the point where it's unwatchable, and definitely not so that you don't still feel for them- you'll feel for them.

Let the Right One In

Although I did expect it to be scarier, it is a very suspenseful film, and has it breath-holding moments. This is appealing to not just horror film junkies, but also those who appreciate traditional vampire stories and touching friendship- the two themes that stand out the most to me watching this movie.

Edward Scissorhands

On paper, this never would've worked in a million years, just because the premise is such a b-movie type idea, but because of the fantastic acting, direction, and convincing chemistry between leads, is was an absolute masterpiece. This is one of Johnny Depp's best roles, and it's in a movie that is so sweet you sympathize, so funny you crack up, and so genuine you feel like you're right there.

One of the best movies I've seen personally. It's very quick, and witty. The OST is haunting, nothing less than perfect.
The plot develops similarly to that of Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs the World.
Loved it.
