La La Land
La La Land(2016)

Bright! Bold! Stupendous! Phenomenal! Spectacular! Superb!
This film reminds me of the musicals of days gone by. It is visually stunning, and full of colors of every hue imaginable. It pulls you in immediately before the title even gets to the screen. I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat (literally) several times. I almost had to remind myself to breathe! This is indeed a musical ride of joy, filled with songs, a love story and L.A. as it's backdrop. Run - don't walk to see this film. I suspect, that like me, if you're a film aficionado you will see this delight more than once.

Manchester by the Sea

"Manchester By The Sea" (12/2016) 5 of 5 stars
Thank God for Dec. Oscar consideration releases! No idea what this film was about at all. Saw it based strictly on the "buzz". My goodness! Serious subject, but quite, quite real. Portrays the love of family that cuts deep regadless of circumstance. Family's often try and do the right thing for each other.

Casey Alleck's performance is stellar. Michelle Williams most assuredly will get a supporting actress nomination. Lucas Hedges (as the spirited 16 year old) is also wonderful.

This film is a bit dark. It takes place in the Boston area, and not necessarily during any sunny periods (not snow but dark). But it all fits together like cards in a proverbial deck.

An uncle is forced to take care of his teenage nephew after the boy's father dies.

Nocturnal Animals

"Nocturnal Animals" (12/2016)
3.5 of 5 stars
What a suspenseful film! The way it's told as a story of a story is enticing. As the film unfolds, I found myself on the edge of my seat to see where it was headed. Would he? Wouldn't he? Jake Gyllenhaal's performance is amazing, as is Amy Adams. As Bette once said "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night." Indeed!

An art gallery owner is haunted by her ex-husband's novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a veiled threat and a symbolic revenge tale.

"Jackie" (12/2016) 5 of 5 stars
I saw this movie only based on the preview I saw of it & the subject matter. Natalie Portman's performance is nothing short of stellar. She IS Jackie! The friend saw this with me didn't realize that it was Portman until about 10-12 minutes into the film! She undoubtedly will be nominated for awards, and I suspect that she will win some as well.

I've not idea if this is based on truth, a book, an article or is a fictional representation of something that was actually done. I don't care: IT IS THE KENNEDY'S for God's sake!

Stars. 5 out of 5
JACKIE is a searing and intimate portrait of one of the most important and tragic moments in American history, seen through the eyes of the iconic First Lady, then Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy (Natalie Portman). JACKIE places us in her world during the days immediately following her husband's assassination. Known for her extraordinary dignity and poise, here we see a psychological portrait of the First Lady as she struggles to maintain her husband's legacy and the world of "Camelot" that they created and loved so well.

"Lion" (12/2016)
stars. 4 out of 5
I knew little of this film except:
1. Nicole Kidman is in it, I'll see anything she does.
2. It was getting rave reviews
3. The commercials on TV peaked my curiousity.

What a film! Heartwarming, charming, lovely, sad, joyful. It uses limited language to convey its message. I'm not saying there is no speech, of course there is. But this film uses images, imagination & music more than words.

Brilliant! Loved it. Can be a bit slow moving, trust me just commit to it and stay the course!.

Five-year-old Saroo gets lost on a train which takes him thousands of Kilometers across India, away from home and family. Saroo must learn to survive alone in Kolkata, before ultimately being adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty-five years later, armed with only a handful of memories, his unwavering determination, and a revolutionary technology known as Google Earth, he sets out to find his lost family and finally return to his first home.

Eye In The Sky

this movie was BRILLIANT, Nail Biting, awesome. it really makes ya think about the way that wars are "fought" now-a-days....

Hello, My Name is Doris

I loved this film....If you are a fan of Sally Field, you'll enjoy this. I think that last film that I really remember her in (due to size of part) was 'Lincoln" back in 2012. She is F I E R C E in this film. Simple, but believable story, and reminded me what great acting skills & talent she has. I hope that she gets more parts like this!

Crimson Peak
Crimson Peak(2015)

Awful left after an hour ridiculous and takes to long everything that you can expect to happen does, waste of time and money

awful boring long, George must have needed money

Force Majeure

awful boring, utter waste of time

He's Way More Famous Than You

I definitely loved this film. You have to however be an admirer of totally and completely zany comedic films. I am reminded (as an example) of "What's Up Doc" with Barbra Streisand & Ryan O'Neil from 1972. This film is CRAZY, wacko, but is also cute, clever, funny and made me laugh out loud in several places. Even within it's craziness, it still made me root for the lead character of Halley. She's so sad and pathetic, you really want her to better her life and pull herself up and succeed at being happy. Her brother Ryan is awesome as well. You really feel for him that he's not a successful actor, and it waiting for his own big break. Again, I must say you need to be someone that appreciates and enjoys crazy, zany comedic "romps". If that is you, and you are not expecting a cinematic masterpiece made with millions of dollars, you will love this film. It certainly is quite worth seeing.

Promised Land

3 stars: This movie was good, not great, but ok. It hit on an emotionally sensitive issue to me, as I have been following the ‚fracking‚?situation for about a year now and it concerns me gravely. The film is pretty tightly edited, although it could have been slightly shortened. It does have an interesting ending, and a surprise I did not see coming. I hope that people actually see it. I saw it on a Fri. evening in Hollywood (10pm) and there were about 10 of us in the theater. Of course this could be because of ‚Les Mis.‚(TM)s‚? opening weekend. I hope that people do see it so as to become familiar with the issue, become familiar with the issue.

Les Misťrables

9,999,999 STARS: I can now see why people that write reviews are short and simple, adjectives enough. There are so many excellent actors in this, I can‚(TM)t like one more or less than the others. Here is my condensed review:
Brilliant; dazzling; luminous; radiant; stupendous; immeasurable; monumental; breathtaking;
electrifying; theatrical; tragic; astonishing; incomprehensible‚¶and on and on and on..

The Impossible

2 ¬ 1/2 STARS: This movie caught me quite off guard. I went to it expecting to see a film that would be a disaster epic. What I got was an emotionally charged melo-drama! This film is OVER THE TOP drama! The music does everything that it can do to pull you in. The story is very very emotional. So, don‚(TM)t go see this, If you are in a weakened state! It is a good movie. I would probably not call it ‚great‚? because the emotional aspect of it is a bit too predictable.

This is 40
This is 40(2012)

3 Stars: This movie was suggested by a friend, as it was not on my ‚must see‚? Christmas release list. While I can certainly remember 40 fondly, I didn‚(TM)t even think of seeing this! I assumed it would be just another ‚stupid‚? attempt at comedy. Thank goodness for the recommendation! This was light, airy, and the humor was very spot on. One can tell that Judd Apatow is 45 (I looked it up) ‚" no wonder it‚(TM)s so great! A movie about being 40 written by someone that recently turned 40! Plenty of good old fashioned fun ‚" not a bunch of one liners (as is oftern times the case) that are tossed about. There was a lot of actual story inserted here, and situations that I am sure people that are married and have kids go through. I really enjoyed this and laughed out loud several times. HINT: As was suggested to me, stay at the end to see some of the out takes after the credits roll for a bit.

De rouille et d'os (Rust and Bone)

5 stars: This film was not on my original list of films that I was aware of and planned on seeing. I found it because the start time was correct and it is a French film. I love French films. They always seem to be ‚real‚? and not a bunch of CGI crap, are actually filmed places and are generally very good. This film was no exception. The main plot ‚" boy meets girl et all is of course quite basic, however the subplots that are involved with this process are great; ‚tragedy‚(TM)s‚? happen in this film, however they only serve to further intensify the story line and in the end work themselves out; I found this to be a film about starting over, both literally and figuratively, it‚(TM)s about finding yourself , and most of all it‚(TM)s about loving our life and loving those around us; as it was wrapping itself up into a nice, neat little bow, I was left with a nice warm feeling, glad to be alive, glad to be human, and glad to be able to see beautiful films such as this‚¶

The Guilt Trip

4 Stars: For anyone that has a mother that at times is (or was) controlling, or probably anyone that may have an elderly parent or that lives (or has lived as an adult) with their mother, this is a great film. It pokes fun at the son/mother relationship and is quite true to life. I laughed out loud on several occasions. Will this film win any awards, most assuredly no. However, it is true to life, and is fun and moves well. I was very happy to see ‚Babs‚? back in a film again. This kind of reminds me of the film ‚Mother‚? with Debbie Reynolds years ago, although it‚(TM)s not that funny, but it‚(TM)s the same type of film. If you‚(TM)re a son that loves or has loved your mom as the two of you grew (grow) old together, you will probably appreciate this ‚" I know I did.

Life of Pi
Life of Pi(2012)

5 STARS‚¶I was not expecting to like this film as much as I did. I was dragged to it by someone that wanted to see it. I already had pre-conceived ideas about why I would not like it. Boy, was I wrong! The story turns out to be interesting, but the best part of course, is the scenery and images presented. I did NOT even see it in 3d, and it was brilliant! I‚(TM)m not sure how much of what I saw was real (meaning NON CGI), but, even so, the images presented for me to view were excellent. I really, really enjoyed this story, and it did make me tear up a bit at the end. It is a wonderful film ‚" go see it, and don‚(TM)t make the mistake I did ‚" see it in 3D ‚" I‚(TM)m sure it‚(TM)s even more amazing that way !

La Rafle
La Rafle(2012)

5 STARS: This is the 2nd film that I have seen that deals with the Nazi‚(TM)s rounding up of the Jews that were in Paris in 1942. The other was ‚Sarah‚(TM)s Key‚?. While that movie was also excellent, I would say that this one is better. There are more characters involved in this, and oh my God, this is a tearjerker near the end! I could actually hear people crying in the theater near the end of this film, it is so emotionally and beautifully well done. Even though the subject is dark, the scenery is colorful and he cinematography is excellent. I would recommend this if the subject is not to deep for you to handle, it‚(TM)s well worth the ride.

Silver Linings Playbook

2 .5 stars: I‚(TM)m not quite sure what I thought of this movie. At times I found myself thinking ‚hmmm, this is very true to life and very real‚?, at others, I thought ‚this is about people screaming at each other‚?. It is a very real movie, I guess that‚(TM)s the best thing I can say about it. I fell asleep in a few places, but I was awfully tired too, so there you have it. I guess overall I would say wait for the dvd. I don‚(TM)t understand why the critics are going so wild over it !

5 Stars: I really enjoyed this film. I don‚(TM)t know anything really about Lincoln, other than the basics, so I therefore cannot speak to the accuracy of the information contained in it. I did believe from the start, that Daniel Day Lewis WAS Abraham Lincoln. Superb acting job, he should at the very least get nominated (I suspect this film will garner a lot of nominations and wins). This is an amazing film. I cried in several places of it, it really is amazing to think what Lincoln accomplished, and then was killed shortly thereafter. Go see it!

Anna Karenina

I loved this film. While it‚(TM)s true that it does not have that much of a story, the manner in which it is told is brilliant. It is funny, and the visuals are breathtaking. I highly recommend this if you like period pieces. It‚(TM)s a little funny to see that Jude Law is now old enough to be playing the ‚older‚? guy VS the cute young guy that is in this (who by the way is gay in real life) named Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Great great period piece, lovely colors, music, scenery, it‚(TM)s more like watching a play than a movie in the way it is presented.

The Paperboy
The Paperboy(2012)

5 Stars !Brilliant! Strange unusual film, with excellent performances by Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman & Matthew McConaughey!

End of Watch
End of Watch(2012)

5 STARS ! This movie was excellent! If you like cop type action movies, this is great, it really gives a sense of what it must be like to be a cop in LA, to never know what's going to happen on a call, nor to know what kind of shit you are gonna end up getting into, i loved this film - i highly recommend, there is a bit of gun violence and a little other, but it's not overly so, it fits the story, and it has a twist at the end that i did not see coming!

Killer Joe
Killer Joe(2012)

4 stars: this movie was great, don't let the reviews of "graphic violence" scare you off, this story is brilliantly shot and told, you can tell that the same director (William Friedkin) that did the Exorcist did this movie, the shots are great; as for the violence, yes it does have a couple of graphically violent scenes, but they weren't that long, and you can always look away if need be (i did a little), but the overall brilliance of the film makes it a must see!

The Imposter
The Imposter(2012)

5 Stars...This movie was brilliant! It's a documentary, but told in real story format; brilliant; thriller, engaging, exciting, it is so well told, I was on the edge of my seat! the way the story is told is brilliant, and the end wraps everything up, did not leave anything wanting from me, GO SEE THIS!

Ruby Sparks
Ruby Sparks(2012)

I really enjoyed this film. The story had a beginning, middle, and end, and was easy to follow. It moved quite well, and was overall a good time. I highly recommend this to anyone. It's an interesting twist to a somewhat similar story...Highly Recommend

Bill W.
Bill W.(2012)

this was quite interesting, contains a lot of footage and photo's of Bill and the people in his life that were close to him; it also contained information that i had not heard previously; and it covered the aspect of how difficult it was for Bill himself to be anonymous, and just be an AA member instead of to be so revered and looked up to by AA's members; it also covered the necessity and development of the traditions as well as the whole LSD situation which is explained in detail; if you are interested at all in this subject, I suggest you see this, it's a tad bit long, but I found the subject matter and the contents worth hanging in there for

Oh My Goodness, seeing this on the big screen was so glorious! I absolutely love this soundtrack (of course I do), and know all of the songs; I recall in the "spring of my youth" when I used to think that I was Sally Bowles, ha! Brilliant, I am so happy that I am old enough now that when they re-release "old" movies they end up being one's that I loved as a child; I did reflect as I watched this movie and thought about myself at age 10 when I saw it; I was still naive and innocent (yes I was), I didn't even realize when I saw it the first time that the orchestra consisted of drag queens! ha! Anyway, I hope that Fathom Events continues to screen "old" movies for 1 night only so that this "old" girl can see more!

The Dark Knight Rises

at face value, this movie was good as these types of movies go, I however could not get past what happened surrounding this film, and found it difficult to enjoy it; each time there were "shoot outs" I cringed, when there were things being blown up, I thought of 9/11, it's one of those situations (for me) where "art imitated life" just a bit too much; I did stay for the entire film, although I did find it unnerving, but I was curious how it ended; as I say, if that had not happened last weekend I would have liked it, but for me, that cast a darkness over it that I really had trouble getting past; as far as content within the movie there are far too many parallels between what's really going on in the world (rich vs. poor, have's VS have not's),which made me feel sad; it's just too hard to ignore the things that are going on in the world and then view this as a comic book which i think is the point, right?

That's My Boy

HORRIBLE ! i was not expecting much of this film, since i had noticed a few reviews (by people) were awful. i figured it could not be all that bad, after all "Jack and Jill" was pretty funny, and i enjoyed that. boy, was i wrong! i cannot believe that Adam Sander would stoop to such a level of such a poor, poor, script! It is just crass, and tacky. I mean really - eating out pussy, blowjobs, hand jobs, scewing old ladies, beating off to pictures of old ladies, sisters having sex with their brothers, nothing is off the table in this film, and it could have been somewhat funny without being so damn nasty, being nasty, does NOT make a film funny...Was this even a screeplay or did a bunch of buys sit around a table and think of every tacky thing that could be put into a film and then filmed it ?Adam could have and should have done much better for himself. If he does not redeem himself with his next film, I suspect people (such as myself) will give up on him...I will give Andy Samberg a pass, since this is his first big starring role, and he did after all just leave Sat. Night Live - he needed a movie, and he's good and funny (not to mention cute) in this film, so hopefully his next one is a better "script" (I really hate to use that word with this movie). DO NOT SEE THIS - not even dvd worthy...

21 Jump Street

i am really surprised by how much i enjoyed this movie! i had read some good reviews, and i always liked the tv series, so i figured what the hell! it was really entertaining, i have certainly seen a lot worse films in the past year, let me tell you. the story moves along well, and it was nice to see cameo's from Holly Robinson Peete do a cameo as Judy Hoff's (she's the police dept. impound lot cop), and also Johnny Depp (towards the end of the film) . of course these cameo's were lost on the audience since they were all too young to appreciate the pun, and probably none of them realize that it was once a tv show, but it made me and my friend chuckle. i would surprisingly recommend this! it was entertaining and it was set up so that there will most likely be a sequel if it does well!

One additional note, I found myself looking at the third main character in the film (a young man who plays a drug dealer) and kept thinking that he looked an awful lot like a young James Franco. Then when the credit came up and the actor's name was Dave Franco, I did some research and low and behold, this Dave is James's younger brother, hence the look-a-like.

Friends With Kids

loved this movie! i love anything that this woman (jennifer Westfeldt write). i was so looking forward to seeing it as soon as I saw her interviewed. I loved what she did with "Kissing Jessica Stein" (co-wrote that) and so I had a feeling this would be a good and it was! Perfect amount of editing, the film moves along really well, and the story is great. The two principals (Jennifer & Adam Scott) do an amazing job of bringing this story too life. I highly recommend it and am so happy that she got it made!

We Need to Talk About Kevin

this movie was interesting, it was like a very slow (and often times arduous) symphony, it kept building and building and building, i must say that when it finally got to the end and you are presented with the piece of the story that you have been missing all along, it was quite a shock. i would however not rush out to see this but rather add it to your dvd list of things to watch.

Dr Seuss' The Lorax

loved it, great story, very current and cute, nice "escape" from harsh realities of the real world...

This Means War

this movie was just ok, i had really wanted to see it because i like Chelsea's ridiculous'ness, and I also enjoy Ms. Reese., the story was what i expected - not much, the guys were cute, and Chelsea was Chelsea, there could have been a bit more to it, i was however happy that the ending was not what i thought it would be, overall it is ok

The Woman in Black

I was pleasantly surprised by this film. I had read some background info., so I was aware going in that the old familiar horror studio "hammer films" in the UK, had something to do with it. Those of you that are of a "certain age" will remember all those Christopher Lee Dracula films of the 70's, and the like. They were great old fashioned horror films that relied on fear more than gore. This film is similiar. I actually screamed out loud a couple of times (once due to something on screen, the other in reaction to someone behind me that screamed). I did however find myself throughout the film thinking thoughts such as "don't open that door"; or "don't go outside", or for God's sake, "don't walk into that room", etc. I think that this pretty much sums up the surprise and scary nature of this film. Not a lot (hardly any) actual blood or gore, but lot's of what I'll call good, old fashioned scary shit! I really loved it!

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

This movie sucked, just plain sucked. The story was way too involved and too confusing. I was so hoping that this would be a kind of old fashioned spy type film, but there were just too many stories within the story, that by the midway point, I had no clue what was going on anymore. Jumping between the past and the present is fine, but only if there are not so many subplots as to lose myself in the process. Don't bother!

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Another great movie. I just love the end of the year, when they hold the films that they hope will be nominated for something. I had not read any of the books, but of course am aware of how popular and successful they were. That being said, I knew nothing of the story. This film is also long (as is Mission Impossible). This one caps out at 158 minutes. This did not drag to me, it pulled me right in from the start, and held my attention for the entire ride. It also was easy enough for me to understand the story, something that I really appreciated given the length of it. Go see it - you'll like it. This movie is a true thriller, with a story to back it up the really really entertains and intriques.

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

Ok, so first off, let me say that I am not a formula gay. By this I mean that I DO LIKE Mariah Carey (and am not ashamed to admit it), and I also like Tom Cruise.
I have liked Tom ever since he did "Risky Business" (oh those many moons ago), and I really enjoy his "Mission Impossible" movies.
That being said, I LOVED this movie - and not because it was him, or part of this franchise. This film really moved quite well. Even though it is 132 minutes long, it did not feel like it dragged to me. The action sequences felt as if they were real, and not just a bunch of "CGI" crap, as is usually the case in these types of films.
I loved this movie, highly recommend it, and am hoping that they make another one.
Tom's performance is top notch, the story is great, as it the directing and as I said before, the action is non-stop!

brilliant, wonderful, marvelous, what a nice, comfortable ride this movie is to the world of childhood - both of what we have and what we don't have, makes you wonder and think about the meaning of your own life in a beautiful yet non forceful way, such a nice, nice movie...GO SEE's cute!

My Week with Marilyn

this movie was brilliant! Michelle Williams portrayal of Marilyn is stunnely accurate! she brings to life Marilyn's beauty, innocence, naive charm and stunning good looks, the story is great, it moves along nicely, the scenery (England) is gorgeous and the script couldn't be any better, I highly recommend this film, lovely, lovely, lovely, if you have the least bit of interest in Marilyn then see this! it's a great journey!

J. Edgar
J. Edgar(2011)

brilliant! leonardo has yet another amazing performance under his belt, this one definitely should get him an oscar nomination, and perhaps a win. this film moves slow, but that is only (I feel) because it has so much information to share with us factually about J. Edgar Hoover. if you go into it, knowing that it is long, you will probably be just fine, I was, and I really, really enjoyed it...

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1

Ok, so either I'm still a teenage girl, or I just LOVE LOVE LOVE these stories, or perhaps a slight combination of both...I really enjoyed this movie, I found it to be so entertaining, that I even forget that the characters in it are almost all wherewolves and vampires! I had read most of the book, so I had a basic idea of what was going to happen. This was really really good, I enjoyed every minute of it, and I was a bit worried about where they would end it since this is part 1. If you even remotely enjoy these stories, go see this, it was fun.

Tower Heist
Tower Heist(2011)

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie, Ben Stiller had a somewhat more serious role than his usual antics, Eddie Murphy was not in it enough, but I thoroughly enjoyed it when he was, there is a large ensemble cast, and I must say that the story was pretty good as well, I really thought this would be a fair to midland type film, but in the end, I really enjoyed it!

Martha Marcy May Marlene

oh my god, i was so expecting this movie to be great, it was getting some buzz, and in the paper there were quotes (for ads for the movie, i should have known better) that said it was fabu, anyway IT SUCKS! don't bother! don't even bother on dvd - there is NO BACK STORY, it's tired, this girl was in a situation for 2 years and they don't provide anything other than a few scenes of what she went through, she's in the present acting nuts, and nothing happens, and the ending is BEYOND RIDICULOUS, it's like jumping off a cliff - literally - you are expecting and hoping and praying that after WASTING 101 minutes of your life, that you will get some information but no - something is alluded to and then it cuts to the credits - don't bother - SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS

The Skin I Live In

Oh My God! To say that this film was brilliant is not enough.

How about some more adjectives: bright, dazzling, flashy, glossy, luminous, lustrous, radiant, sparkling and vivid.

This is only a start!

I already knew going into this that Pedro Almodovar is a force. I saw this movie knowing nothing about it but that it was his film.

I found this film to be great on every imaginable level I can come up with. If you enjoy Art House type films, GO SEE THIS NOW!

The story is wonderful, the cinematography beautiful, the characters inviting and sinister, the music is as much a part of this film as the actors are.

I loved loved loved this movie. I will see it again, just to see what I missed. Brilliant, great movie, did not drag at all. Thank God for this man and the dazzling way that he tells us his stories. If only American films could be this good.

I am sure 100% that this MUST win Foreign Language Film of the year Oscar...

a charming little tale, a bit of a different back story, but the performances by the actors made it interesting, the first few minutes were a bit difficult to hear, but then it seemed to adjust itself, the younger boy's performance is wonderful, and Helena Bonham Carter is delightful, I would definitely put this on your short list

Dream House
Dream House(2011)

Movie was horrible! Not even dvd worthy...

i read a review of this film which basically said that it is way to many genre's trying to be fit into the same film, it has that blue-ish tint type thing, it is gory, it is gross, it has action, it has crime, it feels as if it is trying to be an art film, and many other things, etc., but the thing i found the oddest about it is that there times when there is not dialogue, and no music, just silence, now if a moment like this happens in a film (of a different type, trust me), i expect there to be something for me to focus on, concentrate on, and take in, in this film, it was in stupid places like people sitting on a couch, and the MUSIC (if you can call it that) in the film is horrible - it sounds like the same beats played out over and over again, i left this film feeling as if I had wasted my time, and that it was a very low budget film, as for the actors though, i did enjoy Ryan Gosling & Albert Brooks as both of their role's were outside the usual roles that I would associate them with...i say wait for DVD or cable, and then if ya don't like it, it's not as big a deal as when you go to the theatre and it SUCKED

One Day
One Day(2011)

this movie is just horrible! i love anne hathaway, and hoped when i was a few minutes into it, that she could save it, but this just wasn't the case; her "british" accent was horrible, they should have had her play an american in london and left it at that; the story is obvious from the title, you know that eventually these characters will end up together, but getting there is long, boring, arduous and makes one wish they were asleep; this movie is only 1 hour 48 minutes long, but it feels like it is 3 hours long; the last 30 minutes or so of it are good, and there is a surprise ending that i did not see coming, but the STORY is horrible; i guess this proves that an author should not re-write their material as a screenplay, at least that is the case with this...

sorry, this movie SUCKED, the preview shows an older man (75) calling his son and stating that he is gay, and the implication is that he wants to learn about being gay (i.e. music, bars, etc.), sounds fun, right? NOT, this is a sad and depressing movie, it has some wisdom in it, but overall it is a DOWNER

Super 8
Super 8(2011)

ok, i did NOT like this movie, it is "ok", let me say though that i think it is an age thing, if i was younger (as in let's say under 35) maybe i would enjoy it more, but it reminded me of his past movies too much - a little bit of "close encounters of the third kind" meets "ET" and the "goonies", not a lot of original story here, great special effects, but overall, i did not like this, maybe i'm too spoiled with flawless independent films

Midnight in Paris

this film is utterly charming! it is a typical woody allen movie, one that involves a few people, and their interactions with one another, i was quite happy with owen wilson's performance in this, and the story is marvelous, it sure makes Paris look swell, and like the kind of place that anyone would fall in love with, this is a brilliant feel good fun film - go see it!

Everything Must Go

this movie was a little strange, it all takes place in the front yard of a man's house, and it was pretty interesting, he's a drunk, that's trying to maintain sobriety, and having a bit of trouble with that, it's not that good but it's not that bad's a light light film, nothing too deep or complicated, it's worth the 90 minutes or so to see it

this is a very strange movie indeed, about 45 minutes into this, i found myself asking where is this film going?, and i wanted to find out!, it's an odd tale of loss, and coping (or not), and getting through, and oh yeah, there's a guy that has a bit of a temper, and likes to start fires and walks around in his underwear, i love films like this that show raw, human emotion and feelings as raw and build a story around them, i recommend this if you love art house/indie films

Oh My God! What a wonderful film this is! (Now at Embarcadero). It is so well acted, and deeply moving, i really enjoy films that take me away somewhere, that allow me to believe that i am right there with the character trying to accomplish whatever they are, and this film did that to me, the last few minutes where everything comes together are amazing, and it made me feel good cause it speaks to a mother's unwavering love of her children. i highly recommend it.

There Be Dragons

this is a strange movie, the story is somewhat interesting, but what really sold me on the film was the use of music, the sets (the one's that were not "green" screened of course), and the acting, it seems as if it is moving kind of slow, but constant, i did however like the way it all comes together at the end, and overall would recommend it, but don't expect a suspense moving thriller as it's not, but it is worth seeing.

In A Better World

First, let me say that I would see anything that filmmaker Susanne Bier puts out. This film was wondrous! The story is what I would label as "steady", it's not fast paced, it just kind of moves along - but what a ride along the way! Ms. Bier's way of showing us images is so amazing - big wondrous clouds, someone's hair blowing in the wind across their face, trees blowing, birds flying, dawn, twilight. So many beautiful examples of her vision in this film. And the performances that she always gets out of her actors - amazing - no words need be conveyed in some scenes - just the tears, the look, the eyes, amazing! The subject matter of this film is serious, but what a story - over the top and excellent. Last but not least, so refreshing to see films that are actually filmed somewhere and don't take place entirely inside a studio, or in front of a green sceen. GORGEOUS! GO SEE IT, you won't be sorry...

Source Code
Source Code(2011)

this film was excellent! i did have some misgivings about seeing a movie where the entire plot centers around 8 minutes of a day, but after having read some reviews, decided that it was worthwhile checking it out, i was very pleased with it! action filled, and story line was quite interesting, very sci-fi genre and reminded me of sci fi books that i would have read as a kid, the ending threw me a bit, had a little bit of trouble figuring it out, but i LOVED it - highly recommend it

Water for Elephants

I enjoyed this movie, but i did feel that the plot left me a little underwhelmed, i was expecting more of a story than what was presented, none the less, i did enjoy it because of the animals - mainly the elephant who is the star of the movie, it's an interesting portrayal of what the circus used to be like before they were held in arena's and stadium's, and it gives you a small look behind the scenes as well, i would recommend it, but don't expect anything deep, the last few minutes of the film are quite pleasant, and i only wish that the storyline that is revealed near the end of the film had only been developed a bit more

this movie was EXCELLENT, great story, amazing cinematography - can you say "thrill ride" - it was like being on a rollercoaster! thank god it was not in 3d, that would have been way too much of a strain on this ol girl's eyes. very very good movie, well written, acted, directed, executed - everything - i found nothing wrong with this! GO SEE IT ! YEAH !

Win Win
Win Win(2011)

this was an adorable little film, about an old guy and the person who becomes his guardian and the people in his life, and how they all end up being connected, this was a really cute "feel good" kind of film, fun, good acting, moves quite well, doesn't drag, i recommend it

The Lincoln Lawyer

this movie was a lot of fun! it started out kind of slow and boring (about the first 30 minutes or so) but after it gets going, it really gets going! there is a basic plot, but then a few sub-plots are thrown in and the fun begins! matthew McConaughey's acting is what I would expect (excellent), and the story is great as well, a lot of fun, and pay close attention in the middle and end of the film - lot's of things happening at once - but great and fabulous ending! yeah!

Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre(2011)

this jane eyre is not like all the other's that i have seen, sure, there is the cute story about jane eyre and her bad life and such, but this version ads a few more twists, and they aren't necessarily all that great, sure there are dapper british looking dudes wearing what i perceive as what they wore in the old days, and they always seem to grow facial hair, and yes there is the big estate that is gorgeous and looks quite british, but overall this film did not delight me as this subject usually does (example - Becoming Jane - enjoyed that 100% more than this), so see this at your own risk!

The Music Never Stopped

brilliant! amazing performance between the father and son, great story, great acting, and good music! a-must-see!

Red Riding Hood

ok, so I have to admit, the only reason I wanted to see this film was the RED CAPE - it's all about the cape - it looked so red and so beautiful, this is probably not a good reason to see a movie, plus there was nothing showing at the time that I wanted to go besides this, anyway, it was not that bad, strange mixing of peter the wolf, and little red riding hood and someone named Henry (I don't get that reference), but than again, I am a little older and perhaps don't remember all my nursery rhymes the way I should, the scenes in it and the cinematography were interesting and made it worthwhile to bottom line, if you like RED CAPES and nursery rhymes, you will like this...

The Adjustment Bureau

this movie was excellent! it kind of reminded me a little of "inception" except that it was simple enough for me to understand, great story, great acting, action, and it actually looked like it was really filmed in new york - not a bunch of blue/green screen bullshit. LOVED IT !

I found this film to be quite refreshing because it was an actual film, one that was actually filmed somewhere as opposed to in a studio with all CGI scenery; it is an interesting story of a man struggling to provide for his family whatever way that he can, and the tough choices that he makes as a human and a father trying to take care of his children; it maintained an interesting pace throughout and held my attention, although it is a tad bit long (2 hours and 27 minutes, so be prepared), Javier Bardem is an extraordinary actor, and this film shows his raw talent

The Social Network

this film is simply put: brilliant. i (like so many others) was curious about the whole facebook story, at least as it was told in this movie; i saw it when it first came out, and then i saw it again recently with friends to revisit it; it is brilliant, fast paced and a great story, you come away feeling like you actually understand how something that so many of us take for granted (i am sure) came to be, i highly recommend this film!

Winter's Bone

this film is simply put: brilliant. i (like so many others) was curious about the whole facebook story, at least as it was told in this movie; i saw it when it first came out, and then i saw it again recently with friends to revisit it; it is brilliant, fast paced and a great story, you come away feeling like you actually understand how something that so many of us take for granted (i am sure) came to be, i highly recommend this film!

Blue Valentine

very enjoyable film; great story telling about a relationship from start to finish; a little too much hetro sex for me, but alas, it was their film (lol). the acting in this was great and the overall story was good, i would recommend it! (thanks Sal for the recommend )

Another Year
Another Year(2010)

This is a delightful british film that basically takes you through the life of an older couple (probably 60's or so) for a year. they have some interesting people in their lives, most of whom are depressed; the couple themselves are extremely happy, content and in love with each other; this love carries over to these people around them that are not as happy; the character "Mary" is brilliantly played by Lesley Manville - she alone is worth seeing the film, she is a brilliant actress, and sincerely makes you feel her characters pain as a middle aged alcoholic woman who is all alone; there are no great statements made in this film, nor things learned, but it is 129 minutes that is very well spent indeed!

Casino Jack
Casino Jack(2010)

I had no idea what this film was about. I had gathered (from the title) that it had to do something with Casino's, and had assumed it took place in Vegas. I think that i had seen the preview once. Anyway, I love Kevin Spacey, so I went to see it strictly based upon my admiration of his work. Much to my surprise, it did not take place in Vegas, and rather than being about gambling or casino's, it had to do with special interest and lobbyists. It was a very interesting tale of (probably) exactly what lobbyists do, and how our "system" works (unfortunately). It's not a great film, but I did find it entertaining, with a story that flowed (most of the time), and it was interesting.

Country Strong

Country Music is another genre that I'm not a big follower of, however, I had seen Gwyneth Paltrow on a few talk shows promoting this film, and it sounded interesting. that coupled with the fact that she did her own singing, was enough to get me into the theatre.

Paltrow gives what I would call a "typical" rendition of an alcoholic/addict trying to stay sober/clean. I say typical because it's been done so many times before, and with much better material. I don't fault Paltrow, just the script.

in any event, the film moves along and the songs and the few stories that are going on it are good enough. it had a surprise ending, that I did not see coming, which ended up making me like it overall.

I would recommend this film. if only movies were are good all year as they are when they are released at the end of the year for award considerations!

True Grit
True Grit(2010)

let me first say (as my facebook friends would know) that I am certainly not the desired demographic for this film. I have no interest at all in westerns, and in fact, I was not planning on seeing this film.

I assumed that it would be similar to the original with John Wayne that I saw in 1969 when I was young (I can't reveal how young, but let's just say very very young.

however, everyone was going on and on about the young 15 year old girl Hailee Steinfeld (as Mattie) and how magnificent she was and how she is the reason to go see this film. enough of you said this, so I decided to trust ya'll and go.

IT IS EXQUISITE! yes, me who loves musicals, show tunes, drag queens, judy garland, and HIGH DRAMA actually said that this western is EXQUISITE!

the story is great, I would call it an "updated" western" or perhaps a "modern western" or even more accurately a "comedic" western. don't get me wrong, it's still a western but there are funny things that are said in it and I found myself laughing out loud several times, as did others in the theater!

go see this - you will like it! Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon are excellent. They are actually more believable than I thought they would be as cowboy types. Josh Brolin (although his part is small) is well Josh Brolin and was also good.

again, GO SEE THIS - it is well worth it, and this young actress (Hailee Steinfeld) could possibly win an Oscar or golden globe if not for this, then surely in the very near future. Hailee is a keeper...

The King's Speech

brilliant, superb, wonderful, marvelous, delightful and engaging. i've yet to find 1 person that did not enjoy this film, and i must now add myself to this ever growing list. it is a great story, and the two principals are exquisite in their roles. i would highly recommend this to anyone and everyone!

Tron Legacy
Tron Legacy(2010)

ok, just so you don't think my "review" is tainted, i saw this in imax (that's the only reason i went besides the company) with a 25 year old (@jovan rocha) and we both agreed that there are two things to say about this movie.

The Fighter
The Fighter(2010)

acting in this was superb, Christian Bale most notably is probably Oscar worthy, Mark Wahlberg & Amy Adams were great as well, but not given quite as much material to work with as Mr. Bale. The story of this is not that exciting, but it was an enjoyable film none the less...

Black Swan
Black Swan(2010)

I did not enjoy this movie as much as I was anticipating that I would. The first half of the film dragged out and I nearly fell asleep. The ballet scenes were beautiful, but the story telling fell short. Once the action (thriller type action) began, it was good, but even that seemed like it fell flat. I am not sure what this movie wanted to be. Was it a story about ballet and the competition involved with that (and the beauty of it) OR was it about a psychopathic crazy bitch? Either way, I was not impressed.

127 Hours
127 Hours(2010)

‚"127" Hours was better than I had expected. I was slightly concerned about whether or not the film would be enjoyable or not with the main focus being on 1 actor. I was pleasantly surprised. The music coupled with the flashbacks to provide some back story seemed to be just enough to keep me entertained. I did have to close my eyes for most of the gruesome part. I had read that some people got sick during this part, so I did not want to be one of them! James Franco proved once again that he is an extraordinary actor!

While I enjoyed this movie, I must say I would have liked to see more complete numbers from start to end, but I spose that would have made it too long. I did love it! Yeah!

The Tourist
The Tourist(2010)

I had not planned on seeing this film. The one I wanted to see was sold out, so I went to this one at the suggestion of the friend I was with (Stephen Dempsey). I was pleasantly surprised! I don't really care for Angelina Jolie - I have never forgiven her for "stealing" Brad away from Jennifer, but that being said she was good. I love Johnny Depp! I will see pretty much anything that he is in, and he did not disappoint me this time. This film is marvelous! It is a good old fashioned "spy" tale, but is not too complicated nor confusing, it flows quite well. The entire film kind of sails along at a rather medium pace shall we say - but that is good. It has a beginning, middle and an end. There is nothing in it that I would classify as "over the top", but there is nothing that would be found in the markdown basement at Filene's either! I would highly recommend this film whether you planned on it or not, you will probably like it!

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

ok, so i saw the movie "WallStreet Money Never Sleeps" and I have now joined the others that did NOT like it. i think that perhaps the material is a little too real for today's world, and that may have made me not that excited about reliving the whole banking bullshit. hmm..what did you think if you saw it? art imitates reality?
