Everything I hoped for with the return of Martin Lawrence and Will Smith as Bad Boy cops, Marcus and Mike. They did not disappoint me. Bad Boys for Life!
There is something to be said for nostalgia. I was just a kid when Richard Roundtree made the role of John Shaft a community icon. He is an icon. Thank you, Tim Story, for keeping the legacy alive.
I gave it 3 stars first because of the appearance of the cast and locations. It made me feel good, especially the wardrobe of the Taraji Henson character. Second, I like Taraji Henson in most things. The problem with this film is that it missed a great opportunity to be good at a time when women are feeling more empowered than ever. I liked the idea that she was given access to hearing what men want but from where I sat the men were shallow and animal-like. I don't think that was a fair depiction. I would have liked to have seen her discovery of real concerns men share but may not say out loud. I also expected that our main character would "represent" women powerfully, not just characterized by the same behaviors as the men in the film while wearing pretty clothes - more of a female Jerry McGuire may have been nice considering all of the right components were there, the boyfriend, the kid, etc. Sad to say, this was a missed opportunity.
I saw it with my husband last night and we both entertained. Going back to the Rat Pack original, Clooney/Pitt, and now this, I am clearly a die-hard fan of the underdog winning at all costs. Only on the screen of course. I enjoyed seeing the woman on screen, great cast and I hope there will be more to come from this crew. I did not give it 5 stars because it was entertaining but predictable. I would have also enjoyed a little more character backstory.
