Andrew's Review of Resident Evil: Retribution
I've always had a soft spot for the Resident Evil movies. I felt that the first two films were a lot of fun to watch and the other two, although subpar compared to the original two, are still bearable to watch. That being said, Resident Evil: Retribution is easily the WORST film of the series. I HATED this film!!! Even for a film like this, my intelligence was being questioned. The film opens the second after RE: Afterlife ended. Afterwards, it cuts to Alice as a housewife just as the zombie outbreak occurs in Raccoon City. Then, as if it didn't make any more sense, it cuts to Alice in the Umbrella Coorporation against her will. Once she's able to escape, she teams up with Ada Wong to meet up with a group of survivors, including Leon Kennedy, to escape the underwater building. That really is the plot. There's not much left to tell about it. The film can get incredibly boring, even during the action scenes. I was able to enjoy some of the action scenes, but (like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) it overuses the slow motion effect, causing the film become boring and tedious after about 30 minutes. Also, the viewer can tell how lazy the script was written because most of the plot is stolen from plot points of other movies, including the original Resident Evil. There's even a direct rip off from James Cameron's Aliens. One of the other major issues of this film was the acting. The worst of it was from the actress who portrayed Ada Wong. Her line deliveries were so flat and felt like she was just reading cue cards the entire time. Overall, this is a film to be skipped. I understand that this is a bridge film so that Paul W. S. Anderson can conclude his series, but he could've tried a lot harder than this.
