The Mountain Between Us

Well...it seems like I liked this movie a LOT more than the critics!

Logan Lucky
Logan Lucky(2017)

what a fun movie! I enjoyed it much more than I expected I would. (not a fan of Nascar racing...and not a fan of heist movies, so my expectations were low).

Wind River
Wind River(2017)

oh, how I loved this movie! I love a good murder mystery that keeps you interested from beginning to end. Jeremy Renner was awesome...and so many other interesting characters. Throw in some beautiful scenery and a few humorous moments to cut the tension and you end up with a really good movie experience.

The most disturbing movie I have seen in a very long time.

The Big Sick
The Big Sick(2017)

I loved this movie and I'm already hoping there will be a sequel! No one got murdered...and there were no car crashes...and no space aliens or super heroes. Just a bunch of likable characters and a good story that made me laugh...and cry..

The Dinner
The Dinner(2017)

What an odd movie! It was 2 hours long and there was one half hour of it that I really, really liked. However...the first hour and a half was really disjointed and bounced all over the place. It seemed like the last half hour would redeem it...but then there was the very disappointing ending. Like Joe said...with a different director and different actors, it could have been a great movie.

funny!...except for that tapeworm scene, which I will never be able to un-see!

Going in Style

Liked it more than I thought I would.

very scary! It seems like they set themselves up for a sequel, but I don't know if I would survive another round of that story.

Fifty Shades Darker

Like the first one...it is erotic and has beautiful Seattle settings and scenery...and I think it will make a lot of money. It also has good music. It definitely won't be winning any awards, but it is entertaining.

What a great story! The little boy was great in his part as young Saroo....an0d I pretty much love Dev Patel in everything I've seen him in, so I knew he'd be great as the grown-up Saroo.

La La Land
La La Land(2016)

I loved this movie so much that I am ready to see it again already! Anybody want to go tomorrow at 12:30 (I am totally serious about this!). To anyone who loved the old (like 1950s old) musicals....I highly recommend this one. I loved the story and loved the characters...and loved the music...loved the sets....loved the fantasy scenes. So hard to believe that it was a very low budget film, by Hollywood standards.

Patriots Day
Patriots Day(2017)

Worth seeing! The one thing I did not like was that they had Mark Wahlberg playing three different police officers....but they didn't make that clear, so it seemed like it was one guy involved in the actual bombing...as well as the capture/killing of the older brother bomber...and the capture of the younger brother bomber who was hiding in the boat. Otherwise, the movie felt like it was pretty accurate and I especially enjoyed the behind-the-scenes investigation scenes. Still think it was amazing how fast they were able to determine who the bombers were and then take them down. Boston Strong!

Hidden Figures

a wonderful story! I'm not much of a Taraji P Henson fan....but she was wonderful in this movie.

I am not normally a Sci-Fi fan.....but I really enjoyed this movie!

Collateral Beauty

Not as bad as the critics would have you believe...like a Hallmark Christmas movie with an all-star cast...and a few interesting twists. Might be difficult to watch for someone who has recently lost someone important to them.

Now this is my kind of sci-fi movie! Really liked the story and the plot twists at the end. oh....by the way, Joe pointed out that Jeremy Renner's last name is a palindrome. coincidence?

Certain Women

A very disappointing movie. I'm hoping someone else sees it so I can discuss a few things. If I had to describe it in a word...the word would either be 'bleak' or 'depressing'.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape

I had forgotten what a wonderful movie this is. Leonardo DeCaprio and Johnny Depp were so great together. Watching it again reminds me of Mom. She sure liked this one.

Deepwater Horizon

I really liked this one....but then again, I almost always like disaster movies based on true events. The special effects were outstanding.

Hell or High Water

The closest I've seen to a perfect movie in quite some time! One critic described it at 'Coen Brothers for squares". I guess that is why I liked it...a Coesn Bros. type plot, but far less violent than a Coen Bros. movie.

War Dogs
War Dogs(2016)

Obviously, I enjoyed this movie way more than the critics. We went to the movie expecting it to be so-so, at best...so it was a pleasant surprise that it was a fast-moving, interesting story (supposedly based on true events). Jonah Hill was awesome as the sleazy arms dealer...and Miles Teller was just as good as the reluctant business partner.

The Shallows
The Shallows(2016)

I've never been much of a fan of Blake Lively....but I sure liked her in this movie. Oh....and Steven Seagull was such an awesome character!

Me Before You

a nice happy/sad movie with great songs (oh...and the Louisa character had a really cute, quirky wardrobe)

horrible movie! Kevin Costner....I expect better from you!

Zoolander 2
Zoolander 2(2016)

I just wonder how they got so many famous people to participate in this movie.....the worst movie we have gone to in years!

Dirty Grandpa

very raunchy!....but not as bad as the critics would have you believe.

The Hateful Eight

The first 2/3 was way better than I expected...then it turned into the typical Quentin Tarantino bloodbath. One pleasant surprise was the Roy Orbison song at the end!

The Revenant
The Revenant(2015)

Yikes! The most, bleak, disturbing, grim, violent, intense, brutal movie I have seen in quite some time! I'm sure it will get a lot of attention during movie awards season. I just kept thinking that 3 hours sitting at the Vikings/Seahawks game tomorrow would be a piece of cake compared to what life was like for these fur traders. I bet the cast was beyond thrilled when this movie was done shooting. There are scenes that will forever be etched in my brain, never to be forgotten!

Another really good movie that needs to bee seen by more people!

Point Break
Point Break(2015)

Yes...the story is lame...but the scenery and extreme sports stunts are spectacular!

Will Smith was awesome in this film. It is a movie that I think should be seen by a lot of people, but unfortunately I don't think that will be the case.

I liked this a lot....just wish there would have been more scenes with Robert DeNiro and Bradley Cooper.

I liked it...but I would have liked it better if it was about half an hour shorter....with most of that time being taken off the 'wrecking the house' part! I've never been a fan of movies where houses get destroyed during parties.

I went expecting this to be pretty boring, but really liked it. What an interesting time in Hollywood history!

The Night Before

I knew what to expect (NOT a Seth Rogan fan!) but we went anyway. I thought that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would somehow balance out gross, stupid Rogan parts. I think you'd have to be under the influence of all the drugs they used in the movie to actually enjoy this one.

The 33
The 33(2015)

Don't let the less-than-wonderful critical reviews keep you away from this movie. It is everything I hope to get out of a movie...interesting characters, suspense, making you feel a wide range of emotions...and ultimately leaving the theater feeling relieved and so happy for the rescued miners and their families. What an amazing story!

Time Out Of Mind

I can't really say that I 'liked' this movie...because it was uncomfortable and mostly depressing. Definitely not a 'feel good' movie. I left feeling grateful for having a warm car to drive home to a comfortable house. The challenges that homeless people face are heartbreaking.

Not as bad as the critics would have you believe!

The first word that comes to mind is 'depressing'. Gave me appreciation for how difficult it is for people dealing with chronic pain....but the story was pretty bizarre. Jennifer Anniston was really good as the bossy, bitchy, miserable main character.

The Walk
The Walk(2015)

Yay!...it is coming to Hibbing this weekend!

Was not a disappointment! I'd definitely give it an award for special effects. They did an awesome job of making it all look real.....such an amazing feat!

The Martian
The Martian(2015)

Best movie I have seen in a LONG time! Interesting story + great characters + a lot of intensity + just enough humor = a great movie experience. Will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat!

The Intern
The Intern(2015)

an enjoyable comedy. Won't win any award nominations, but it is an entertaining story with a good cast of characters.

When we left the theater after the movie ended, I was mostly relieved that it was over because the 2nd half of the movie was so intense. Have to wonder what it is that makes people want to put themselves through the long process of acclimating their bodies to the lack of oxygen....not to mention how difficult , terrifying the actual climb is. Definitely NOT on my bucket list!

Lily Tomlin was perfect for this role as the R-rated Grandma

No Escape
No Escape(2015)

Not as bad as the critics have made it out to be. Will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat.

American Ultra

Where do I start? Me to Joe: "This one won't win any awards".....and Joe to me: "...and it won't make a lot of money". It is excessively violent and seemed to make an attempt at assembling a bunch of quirky characters....but the result was just bad. The story was so bad that I actually fell asleep for 20 minutes....despite the constant barrage of car explosions, fireworks, air attacks and convenience store gunfights. Don't waste your time or money on this movie!

The Gift
The Gift(2015)

I got a little out of my comfort zone and went to this movie by myself (Joe saw it last week on a day when I was sick...and I did not want to miss it). I was literally the only person in the theater, which was an extra-uncomfortable way to watch a suspense movie. Oh....how my Mom would have enjoyed this movie! Without giving anything away...if I were to re-title this movie...I think I would call it "Karma is a bitch".

Ricki And The Flash

I really enjoyed this movie and can't really understand why it is doing so poorly at bringing in people. The musical selections were great...and the quirky, dysfunctional family characters were a good mix.

Ted 2
Ted 2(2015)

Really got a kick out of some of the jokes....and the opening dance sequence was REALLY cool!

Hot Pursuit
Hot Pursuit(2015)

Reese Witherspoon...what were you thinking? This was SO bad!

Woman in Gold

Really enjoyed this movie....good story and sobering flashback scenes from a shameful time in World history.

The Boy Next Door

This one should have gone directly to the Lifetime movie network. In fact...Lifetime has a movie on right now with the exact same title. Coincidence? Joe's comment: "I thought it was going to be a romantic comedy" Ha! Ha! I knew it was going to be a stalker movie. To anyone who was considering going to it, I would say if you liked Beyonce's "Obsessed" movie...you will most likely like this one (although this one is quite a bit gorier).

Awesome movie! Really interesting story....and Steve Carell and Channing Tatum were great. A really dark story.....I don't think Channing Tatum smiled even once during the whole movie.

Taken 3
Taken 3(2015)

More spectacular car chases, more over-the-top shoot outs and a plot that was far more far-fetched than 'Taken' and 'Taken 2'.

The Gambler
The Gambler(2014)

Joe's analysis: It won't win any awards and it won't make a lot of money

oh, my....what an amazing story of survival. There were a few scenes that seemed unbelievable, but overall it was a great story. And...a note to others planning to see it: our theater was totally packed, so you might want to your theater a bit early to get a good seat.

Great movie! I highly recommend this one!

The Theory of Everything

We really liked this movie. Very inspirational! Saying that Stephen Hawking makes the most out of a bad situation is a gross understatement. Wow! I'd give Eddie Redmayne the Best Actor oscar....he was awesome. I wholeheartedly recommend this one!

St. Vincent
St. Vincent(2014)

Really enjoyed this one!...it made me laugh and made me cry and I loved the story.

The Equalizer

Denzel, Denzel, Denzel....I expect SO much better from you. Jeesh. To say there was excessive violence in this movie would be a gross understatement. One guy kills the entire east coast Russian mafia, all of the corrupt Boston cops.....then, to top it off, he goes to Russia to get the top Russian mob boss. Each murder more gruesome than the next. The plot was far from believable. If you love a lot of violence, explosions and Russian gangsters, you might love this movie. Not my cup of tea.

The Identical

This movie was rather bizarre (the whole Elvis thing). Would be interested in hearing what others thought of it, but I suspect not many of my friends will see it.

The Hundred-Foot Journey

a good story....and a good cast...set in a beautiful location

I think this is the best movie we've seen this year....such an interesting concept and a wonderful cast.

Sex Tape
Sex Tape(2014)

By far the worst movie we have seen this year! Dumb story, TERRIBLE dialogue. I think it was supposed to be a comedy, but it was just stupid and not funny at all. Joe's comment: "It exceeded our expectation of badness". Definitely makes it to my all-time 10 worst movies list!

Not as bad as the reviews would indicate!...Typical Melissa McCarthy physical, raunchy humor.

The Immigrant

I'll go with Joe's quote about this one: "This movie is good....but really depressing and bleak"

Jersey Boys
Jersey Boys(2014)

Again...I have to disagree with the critics. We really enjoyed this movie version of "Jersey Boys". We saw the Broadway version....and we also saw Frankie Valli in concert (about 20 years ago)....and I really enjoyed all 3 experiences. It is hard to imagine that Franki Valli is now 80 years old.

A Million Ways to Die in the West

Anytime you have a movie where the lead actor is also the director/writer/producer...the results aren't usually great. That being said, there were plenty of good laughs...and some quirky supporting actors that made it fun.

22 Jump Street

the plot was pretty stupid....but I do like the pairing of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as cop partners....and there were enough funny scenes to keep it entertaining.

Disappointing!...one of those movies where the majority of the funny scenes are shown in the preview. Too much loud frat house music too.

The Fault In Our Stars

It you feel like you need a good cry, this movie will get you there. The young leading actress and actor were awesome...and the plot had plenty of little twists to keep it interesting. Definitely recommend this one!

Million Dollar Arm

Obviously, I liked this movie a lot more than the critics! It has been quite awhile since we've been to a movie that made me laugh....and made me cry. Happy to see Suraj Sharma (the boy from 'Life of Pi') in another movie.

It is hard to know what to say about this one. To say they took liberties with the biblical version of the story of Noah is a gross understatement! The gigantic Watcher creatures were extremely bizarre. It was more violent than I expected too. On the positive side, the special effects were impressive...and the characters and story were interesting.

The Descendants

Loved this movie! A great story with many moral dilemmas and strained/evolving relationships. Just enough humor, just enough drama. My favorite line: "give your kids enough to do something...but not enough to do nothing".

Watching this one again 2 1/2 years later.........even better than the first time!

3 Days To Kill

What was Kevin Costner thinking? One of those movies where it seemed like the producers said "just load it up with shoot-outs, explosions and creepy bad guys and you won't need anything else". They attempted to add humor...but it sure didn't work for me.

Really enjoyed the story and the performances by Judi Dench and Steve Coogan.

Lone Survivor

POWERFUL! INTENSE! I'm not much of a fan of violent movies...the exception is war movies. This one was excellent.

August: Osage County

a little slow moving, but some pretty good cat fights. Great cast!

Grudge Match
Grudge Match(2013)

I'm definitely not a fan of boxing...but the preview for this movie looks great..."Rocky" meets "Raging Bull"...the geriatric edition! Seems like a very witty script and very funny characters.
Jan. 5th - We mostly liked the movie and I probably would have given it 2 stars if it didn't have the Dante Slate Jr character (played by Kevin Hart). What a totally annoying character....so much so that I would avoid any movie he was in! Joe would have also liked it more without the annoying squeaky-voiced grandson.

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty

The critics didn't like this movie much...and the only reason Joe decided to go see it was that it was too cold to drive to Duluth to see something he thought would be more worthwhile. Turns out that we both really liked this movie. The fantasy parts-special effects were pretty cool...and the story was enjoyable and didn't drag.

The Wolf of Wall Street

It sort of felt like a sequel of "The Great Gatsby"....1980s version with 10x more decadence....super-sexed and excessive drug use. Since it was based on a true story about someone who made millions by cheating hard-working people out of their savings, I found myself wishing that all of the main characters would meet with unpleasant ends.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues

I went with expectations that it would be a decent comedy...but the dumbness kind of overpowered the funniness. The Steve Carell/Kristin Wiig characters were so bizarre that they were more annoying than funny. It was a 2 hour comedy that felt like it was more like 4 hours long.

American Hustle

What I liked most about this movie was the characters. The plot was a little too confusing as the basic plan kept changing and morphing...so it became challenging to keep track of who the good guys were and who the bad guys were and who was 'real' and who was pretending to be real. I especially enjoyed Christian Bale (who is originally from Wales) playing a sleazy, overweight con artist with a New Jersey accent and a really bad comb-over hairdo.

My first thought is...James Franco, Wynona Ryder and Kate Bosworth (as the not-so-classy Cassie) must have been desperate for a paycheck! Excessive violence and bad camera work rarely result in a great movie. Joe's comment: "When a third of the dialogue is the "F" word and derivatives of it, it is a pretty sure thing that the movie will be bad".

Delivery Man
Delivery Man(2013)

A ridiculous story with a marginal cast of characters (very forgettable)....but watchable anyway. a not-so-funny-comedy

12 Years a Slave

Hands down...the most depressing movie we have seen in years. Very difficult to watch. The beatings scenes were brutal and even with my eyes closed, I could barely stand listening. Left the theater with my stomach in knots....and still feeling sort of unsettled. It was a very good movie, but hard to watch. It made me think of a time that we took a tour of two plantations. The tour mostly focused on the beautiful, enormous main house...which were had beautiful furnishings and interesting stories about their histories. I remember that there was a brief walk through the slave quarters, but not much time spent talking about how they were treated. Feeling now like if I were to run across a plantation owner in my family tree, I'd not be proud of that! I truly hope that the way the life of the slaves was portrayed in the movie was made to seem far worse than it actually was. No person should ever have to endure that kind of brutality. Was the movie worth seeing?...definitely! But...if you go, just expect to be thoroughly depressed.

Joe's review: "Powerful"

Enough Said
Enough Said(2013)

I would have never thought of casting "Tony Soprano" and "Elaine" as love interests in a movie about middle aged divorced people entering the dating scene.........but we really liked the characters they played and the story. Many great, funny, awkward moments!

Last Vegas
Last Vegas(2013)

I would describe this as a PG, senior citizen version of the first Hangover movie (lots of humor, but without the gross, vulgar aspects). My favorite line: "Billy...now that you have ass hair on your head, do you wash it?...or just wipe?" I actually got teary during the airport scene near the end of the movie. I always like Robert DeNiro and Morgan Freeman........and Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline were also very funny.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa

If you liked the Borat movies, you'll probably like this one (although Joe says the Borat movies are WAY better). It was sort of a 'R' rated rip off of the 'Little Miss Sunshine' story. As the movie was getting ready to start, Joe says: "Really bad decision!". I thought he meant he had a feeling the movie was going to be really bad....but why he actually said it was because a woman just walked into the movie with 2 young children (both looked to be under 10 years old). The movie definitely deserved its 'R' rating...and shame on that woman for bringing children to see it. When the movie was over I heard her tell the children: "no swearing now...and NO doing what you saw in the movie!". Wow!

I'm sort of glad I went to this movie with no knowledge to the 2 grand prix racers and their adversarial relationship. I am not a race fan, so I expected to not enjoy the movie much...but I actually really liked it because the development of the rivalry between the 2 racers was so interesting. It kept my interest throughout.

Captain Phillips

Another really good movie. The pirates were so good...they did not seem like actors. Tom Hanks was also really good....especially in the final scenes.

Really an entertaining movie that keeps your interest from the first minute through the last. Joe and I had the same thought about it....would have liked to have seen more of George Clooney! Also...pretty sure I would have preferred the non-3D version. The last 3D movie I saw before this one was years ago in an IMAX theater....and the current technology for 3D in 'regular' theaters has a long way to go to match the IMAX experience.

Nice to see a movie that kept our interest from start to finish...with lots of plot twists. Mom would have loved this one...she always liked trying to figure out 'who-dun-it'.

The Family
The Family(2013)

Not much good to say about this one. Joe actually said it goes on his personal list of all-time bad movies! He was particularly annoyed with the way Michelle Pfeiffer kept lapsing from her Brooklyn accent to no accent. The movie is described as: Drama, Action & Adventure, Mystery & Suspense, Comedy. I would probably describe it as a lame, violent, dumb comedy. I expected a lot better from Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Still Mine
Still Mine(2013)

I loved this movie. Best love story I've seen in years! I would definitely give James Cromwell (the farmer from "Babe"...the pig movie) an academy award for his performance. A wonderful story...that addresses many issues faced by aging parents and their children. Highly recommend this one! Pretty sure when I make my all-time top 10 favorite movie list...this one will be on it.

Blue Jasmine
Blue Jasmine(2013)

What a good, offbeat dramedy! Joe and I predict that Cate Blanchett will get an academy award nomination for her great performance.

Fruitvale Station

A very raw, depressing story...but glad we went to see it. I vaguely remember seeing the news reports when the incident that the movie is based on occurred...(cell phone videos)...but the background story portrayed in the movie made it even more tragic.

You're Next
You're Next(2013)

If you like gruesome, scary movies...make that GRUESOME, scary movies...this one's for you!

Well...despite the fact that this movie got totally ripped to shreds by the critics...we really liked it. If Steve Jobs was anything like he was portrayed...I would call him a visionary genius who was an unscrupulous, egomaniac...and not a likable person at all. I thought Ashton Kutcher did a good job...especially in mimicking Jobs' unique posture and walking gait. Of all of the people portrayed in the movie, Steve Wozniak was, without a doubt, the most likable. Had I seen this movie before he appeared on Dancing With the Stars...I would have really rooted for the guy, rather than thinking he was just a nerdy dufus, worthy only of ridicule. Anyway...back to the movie. Despite leaving me with a lot of questions about Jobs' personal life (they threw out some tidbits about his private life, but the major focus was on his involvement in the evolution of the Apple computer corporation), I was left feeling like his family would not like the way he was portrayed. Jobs certainly was a major player in the personal computing/electronic revolution/evolution that has affected all of our lives.

Lee Daniels' The Butler

Been a long while since a movie made me cry....my favorites are always the ones that make you 'feel' something. Forest Whitaker was excellent...and even though I am not an Oprah fan, she was good too.

The Way Way Back

a pleasant dramedy with some funny dialogue....and a goofy cast of characters.

Grown Ups 2
Grown Ups 2(2013)

Everything bad the critics say about this movie is true....but we still liked it a lot! Sure, there is some over-the-top barf/fart/boob humor......but we really enjoyed the 80s party and trying to figure out all of the costumes. There are plenty of very funny stunts and some very goofy characters. What's not to like about 'the funny looking guy' from Fargo as a driver's training instructor?...and Shaq as a cop?...and Georgette from the Mary Tyler Moore Show as the soap opera-watching Mom of the Kevin James character? So don't let the bad critical reviews keep you away if you are in the mood to laugh.

White House Down

Can't help comparing this movie to "Olympus Has Fallen". There were so many things I liked better about this one.....better story, better bad guys, better good guys, better special effects. But, enough already!...I think we've had enough exploding White House movies this year!

The Heat
The Heat(2013)

Sandra Bullock made a perfect, prudish 'straight man' to Melissa McCarthy, who was her usual grossly funny self. There were some very funny 'R-rated' scenes.

Before Midnight

We saw this movie in between "Man of Steel" and "World War Z". Talk about polar opposites! This one had zero special effects-no action...100% dialogue, mostly between the 2 main characters. We had not seen the first 2 movies in this series ("Before Sunrise"...1995 and "Before Sunset"...2004, which also feature the same lead actors...Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy... as well as same director)....but I definitely want to see both of them now.

World War Z
World War Z(2013)

Well...all in all, I enjoyed this movie, despite the zillion zombies (not a big fan of zombies). I liked it A LOT more than the "Man of Steel" movie, which was really lacking in the story. This one had a decent story to go along with the 'special effects'. Joe's review: "You need to see movies like this once in awhile so that you really appreciate the good ones when they come around".

Man of Steel
Man of Steel(2013)

Joe and I agreed on this one.....it is about 90% special effects/10% substance. I had a headache from all of the fist fights, shooting, explosions, falling buildings,, crashes and more explosions. The special effects were impressive, but I much prefer a movie with a good story.

This Is the End

This is my new ALL-TIME favorite end-of-the-World movie!

First...let me say that I am not a Matthew McConauhey fan....and not much of a Reese Witherspoon fan either.....but I REALLY liked this movie. Great story, great characters...interesting location. I definitely recommend this one! Best movie we have seen in a very long time.

Olympus Has Fallen

If you like exploding cars, exploding planes, exploding White Houses, people getting killed by gunfire, people getting killed in car crashes, people being tortured...then THIS is the movie for you!

The Call
The Call(2013)

The critics didn't think much of this movie...but we really liked it. I know Mom would have liked this one too...as mystery/suspense type movies were her favorites. The ending was kind of dumb and certain aspects of the story were implausible...but it otherwise was a good, entertaining, suspenseful story.

Into the Wild

I cried...and cried...and cried....and when it was over I cried some more. So many things about this movie reminded me of my brother George.

Dead Man Down

2 stars might be rather generous. The story had a lot of potential...but it was ruined for me by the excessive use of violence.

Side Effects
Side Effects(2013)

The only word that comes to mind is 'disappointing'. Some of my favorite movies are films with lots of plot twists, jaw dropping surprises and mystery. This one seemed promising up to about the last half hour...then the story just got too weird.

Silver Linings Playbook

I loved this movie! It was a little over-the-top on how it dealt with the mental illness aspects of the story....but the journey the story takes was fresh and original . Some of my favorite movies are ones that make me laugh AND make me cry....and this one definitely fits that bill. The oddball cast of characters really grew on me as the movie progressed. The ending was somewhat predictable, but I would have been disappointed if it ended any other way.

I enjoyed this movie....(Joe...not so much). It was long...and dark, but the story took place in such an interesting, tragic time in American history. Daniel Day Lewis will undoubtedly win awards for his portrayal. It always amazes me when a foreign actor so convincingly portrays an American character.

Killing Them Softly

For those who like violence in a movie...this is the movie for you! I would have given it a different title: "Overkill". About the only thing I liked about it was the interaction between the Brad Pitt character and the James Gandofini character. Basically, this movie just seemed like it was created to provide work for unemployed gangster actors from "The Sopranos" and "Goodfellas".

Life of Pi
Life of Pi(2012)

Awesome movie! It might be sort of scary for little kids, but it is a great story with awesome special effects (really...that tiger wasn't real? wow!), stunning scenery...and a super performance by young Suraj Sharma (amazing that it was his very first acting job!)

Enjoyed this movie from start to finish. It kept us wondering how it would be resolved right up until the final scene. You can always count on Denzel Washington to give a good, believable performance. A drama with great special effects, interesting characters, suspense without gun fights or car chases and a good dose of moral dilemmas...my kind of movie!

my review: Awesome! Joe's opinion: not so awesome (I'm pretty sure his less-than-enthusiastic review was influenced by the very noisy snack eaters sitting a few seats away from him. The loud crunching made it hard for him to concentrate on the dialogue).

Trouble with the Curve

an enjoyable feel-good, happy ending movie....somewhat predictable, but still entertaining.

End of Watch
End of Watch(2012)

I really liked this movie....despite a tremendous amount of violence...and despite the extreme overuse of words that start with 'F' (I'm pretty sure some kind of record was broken for most times the word 'f----in' was used in a movie!). Oh...and anyone who got sick watching the camera work on "The Blair Witch Project" will more than likely get sick watching this one. All of that aside...I loved the story and the interaction between all of the characters .I also liked that this movie made me feel so many different emotions.

Hope Springs
Hope Springs(2012)

I really enjoyed this movie! Tommy Lee Jones was perfect and Meryl Streep had her usual spot on performance. Lots of 'laughing out loud' in the theater. Even though it has a PG rating, children and teens would find it boring ....it definitely targets a mature audience.

Moonrise Kingdom

I thought this movie was great (Joe...not so much). Had not heard a thing about it and never saw a preview for it. It is a strange, non-traditional movie with some very quirky, oddball characters (lots of big name actors...with lots of child actors I had never seen before)...set on a really cool island. Definitely a 'love it' or 'hate it' kind of movie...and I put myself in the 'love it' group.

That's My Boy

Even with James Caan and Susan Sarandon....this movie really sucked! Adam Sandler has reached a new low. I didn't think it could possibly be worse than "Jack and Jill"......but this one is a few notches down from that one. I would not recommend paying money to see it in a theater or to rent it.

The Artist
The Artist(2011)

We enjoyed this movie more than we expected. It was totally the right move to do it as a silent movie, since it was about a silent movie superstar whose life imploded with the evolution into talking movies. The movie was cleverly done and it was easy to follow the story. As we were leaving the theater, it seemed like most of the chatter I was hearing was about the great dog 'actor', Uggy.

The Grey
The Grey(2012)

I have mixed feelings about this one. It was nice to see Liam Neeson in a movie where he wasn't trying-to-kill-everyone-in-the-world-or -die-trying kind of movie, like his last few movies were. It was a good survival story, but the wolves were sort of fakey and at times sounded kind of like dinosaurs . Right before we left for the movie I saw a movie critic talking about this movie and he ended his critique by telling everyone that we needed to stay until the end of the credits to see the actual ending to the movie. There were a half dozen of so of us who did that...and there actually is a final scene after the credits...but it was not worth staying through an extra 15 minutes of "the catering service was ________, the snowmobile drivers were________, the first aid officer was________ , thanks to the people of Canada for________ and on and on and on" (if you went to the movie and did not stay through all of the credits and would like to know what happened in the final scene...let me know and I will tell you)

I liked this one more than I expected I would. Wish they would have cleaned up some of the rough language (I think they may have broken some kind of record for 'most F words in one movie'). Also...there were a few too many perfectly timed, unbelievable (only in the movies!) action scenes.

Joyful Noise
Joyful Noise(2012)

It is what it is. I liked Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah as adversaries....and I give Dolly credit for being able to poke fun of herself, with plastic surgery/big hair/big boobs jokes. There were a lot of good singing scenes, but the story was just so-so.

War Horse
War Horse(2011)

Well...if you're feeling like you need a good cry, this is the movie for you! The last 30 minutes were pretty far-fetched, but the rest was really good. Loved the relationship between the boy and the horse...and the relationship between "Joey" and the black horse. I'm always a sucker for an epic type movie, with an animal in a starring role....so this one was right up my alley. The war scenes were pretty brutal...makes me wonder how many humans and animals were injured making the film.

We Bought a Zoo

What a great, feel-good movie! My favorite movies are the ones that make me laugh and make me cry...and this one is definitely one of those. Good animal stories + good people stories + a great cast of characters = an enjoyable movie experience.

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

Well...considering I don't like violent movies, this one gets a good score despite the guns and explosions. The gadgets and stunts were super-cool, as well as the chase scenes. I also really enjoyed the various exotic locations.

The Sitter
The Sitter(2011)

My half star rating pretty much covers it. What a bad movie! Joe and I had the same thought: what in the world were those child actors' parents thinking? We both felt like they must have been so happy to have their kids in a movie that it didn't matter that the movie was raunchy...and not very funny. No way children should be used in such vulgar dialogue and obscene scenes....and shame on the people who brought children to watch it.

New Year's Eve

Even though this movie got totally ripped by the critics, I knew I would like it. There have been a lot of comparisons between this one and "Valentine's Day"...and I agree that both movies are similar: a zillion stars, lots of stories going on at the same time, not much substance. That being said, it was still entertaining. Good music, lots of New York City places that bring back fond memories...and lots of happy endings. I'm sure no academy award nominations will be earned, but it was not the total bust that the critics would have you believe.

Martha Marcy May Marlene

I was all set to give this movie 3 1/2 stars...but I had to deduct a half star for the unsatisfying ending. I really don't like when movies end too abruptly (like "No Country For Old Men"). I'm always left feeling like they must have run out of money and had to end the movie in the middle of a scene. Otherwise, I really liked the story....and the Olsen Twins' little sister, Elizabeth was very impressive as the lead character.

J. Edgar
J. Edgar(2011)

I pretty much disagree with the critics who ripped this movie. I really knew nothing about J Edgar Hoover before seeing the movie. He was certainly an interesting, intelligent, creepy, controlling, narcissistic, manipulative individual...who had some had some peculiar family/interpersonal relationships. I thought the make-up people did a great job of aging the characters. My only complaint about the movie was that it felt a bit too long.

Puss in Boots

You won't think of nursery rhymes in the same way after seeing this movie!

Tower Heist
Tower Heist(2011)

Based on the preview, I expected this one to be a total dud...so I was pleasantly surprised that it was pretty entertaining from start to finish. My main criticism would be that the ending was a little lame.

Peep World
Peep World(2011)

Joe brought this DVD home this weekend. It was REALLY BAD!!! It definitely makes my all-time bottom 5 movie list! It had a decent cast...just a really bad story. A total waste of time.

The Ides of March

a decent political drama. I'm always happy to see any movie that has an interesting plot and did not bombard you with shoot-em-up violence. Joe said he'd give it a "C"...but I thought it was better than that. (Joe was distracted by the strange man a few rows behind us who seemed to laugh really loud anytime there was a curse word in the movie dialog.)

I liked this one a lot! It makes you feel a lot of different emotions...especially during the 2nd half of the movie. A very 'human' story.

I REALLY enjoyed this movie. Brad Pitt was awesome....so was Jonah Hill. Philip Seymour Hoffman was also excellent as the baseball team manager. Anyone who is a sports fan would enjoy this movie. It is an uplifting story, with some great scenes/lines

I guess I would say that I was a little disappointed with this one. They had an all-star cast and the story was interesting. I can totally imagine an epidemic getting out of control and people panicking...resulting in widespread civil unrest.
I also really liked was that a good chunk of the movie was set in Minnesota. My problem with the movie was that too many of the sub-plots were unresolved...which left me feeling like they blew the budget and didn't have enough left to wrap up some the stories.

Apollo 18
Apollo 18(2011)

If you are planning on a career as an astronaut, do not...I repeat DO NOT see this movie!!
(p.s. I'm pretty sure they used the same cinematographer that did "The Blair Witch Project")

Sympathy for Delicious

This movie was very dark...and the story was kind of strange. I think it was probably a direct-to-video film because I don't recall ever hearing the title. I liked the ending, but the path to it was pretty twisted. (In a nutshell: a paralyzed guy on Skid Row in L.A. gets acquainted with a priest at the homeless shelter/soup kitchen. The paralyzed guy discovered that he had the power to heal people...everyone BUT himself. The star (Christopher Thornton) was also the writer....the co-star (Mark Ruffalo) was also the director. The story definitely gives you a lot to think about...with some interesting moral dilemmas.

Final Destination 5

Well...yesterday Joe gave me the choice of this one or "30 Minutes or Less". I chose this one. We had not seen "Final Destination 1, 2, 3 or 4", so we really did not know what to expect. Based on the preview, I was expecting a suspense movie. Welllll....as it turns out, words like GRUESOME and GORY...are really inadequate for describing this one! I think a better title would be: "How many bizarre ways can you find to kill off every cast member?" (my favorites were the gymnastics accident...and the eye-surgery-gone-very-wrong accident.

The Help
The Help(2011)

All I will say is that it has been a really long time since I was at a movie where the majority of the audience members stayed to watch all of the closing credits.........even longer since I've been at a movie where people in the audience applauded after the final scene.

Crazy, Stupid, Love.

We both really enjoyed this one. A superb cast, funny stories, a crazy, silly fight scene and great music. Nice to see a movie that was really funny (and also hit on some emotions we can all relate to), and did not bombard you with a lot of profanity and gratuitous sex scenes,

Friends With Benefits

Enjoyed this movie a lot...especially all of the street scenes in NYC and L.A. Let the theater feeling like I wanted to add 'participate in a flash mob' to my bucket list.

Larry Crowne
Larry Crowne(2011)

I expected a lot more from the pairing of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. I liked the story, but Julia Robert's character was just not likable...and other than the economics teacher, the supporting cast was pretty lame. I really did not like the character that Cedric the Entertainer played...so annoying.

Kind of raunchy...but very funny!

Water for Elephants

Although the critics mostly ripped this movie...I really liked it. It was an interesting story about a traveling circus during the depression era. The mean circus owner was a great villain character. The love story lacked pizazz...but I really enjoyed the various circus performers/workers...and Rosie, the elephant was a great actress.

Rabbit Hole
Rabbit Hole(2010)

It was really nice to finally have a good drama to watch. Movies about people dealing with grief are pretty depressing...but this one was well written and well acted.

I gave it a half a star...just because it had some good music. This movie was really pathetic. Easily the worst movie we have seen this year.

Just Go with It

Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston...I'll be expecting better from you next time!

The Fighter
The Fighter(2010)

Great story, great cast...I highly recommend this one!

Couples Retreat

If you saw the preview, you saw all of the "good stuff".

Valentine's Day

It was better than I expected...and I liked it that there were some surprise story conclusions. The movie would have been better if there were a few less stories/characters. I'm glad Taylor Swift has a singing career to fall back to because acting doesn't seem to be her strong suit.

Dear John
Dear John(2010)

I would classify this movie as a love/war story. If you like love stories, you'll enjoy this one. If you want a good war story, you'd be better off renting "The Hurt Locker".
