Could have been more concise

Elysium
Elysium(2013)

Matt Damon plays great and the visuals are amazing but that doesn't save the film from feeling caricatural

You Kill Me

Funny and touching

Adam
Adam(2009)

Pretty good acting from the leads and lovely story

Cool Hand Luke

The idea of this convict with this unstoppable will to be free amidst a sea of mediocrity trying to drown him is great and Newman performance does it justice, but the rest of the film, the script, all these little details that ring false ... they all seem to drag down what could have been a great film, like Luke is being dragged down in the story

Frances Ha
Frances Ha(2013)

A festival of Greta Gerwig many talents and charms

The Color Purple

Disturbing start, but the rest is just brillant

Gridlock'd

Mesmerising shots, interesting ideas, but the plot might be a tad too convoluted and cold

Avatar brought 3D to the wide public's attention, but this is the movie that showed everyone what it can really bring to cinema. Absolutely stunning, from every point of view !

Short Term 12

Raw and incredibly touching

Morning Glory

Thought it was a pretty average rom com at first. But I have rewatched it several times already and I can't seem to get tired. Rachel McAdams acting is pretty remarkable.

Her
Her(2013)

Beautiful, thought provoking, touching, great music, disturbing at times ... I already rank it among the classics

Jane Eyre

I can see in you the glance of a curious sort of bird
through the close-set bars of a cage,
a vivid, restless captive.
Were it but free,
it would soar, cloud-high.

Upstream Color
½

Weird. Maybe too weird?

Star Trek
Star Trek(2009)
½

Rated it "not interested" just because it's called Star Trek.
Turned out to be much better than I expected. Cool special effects and doesn't take itself too seriously.

Haywire
Haywire(2012)

Not bad for a former UFC champ!

Hanna
Hanna(2011)

Didn't like the visual style, but there is something mesmerizing about watching a young girl kicking ass in rhythm with a cool chemical brother soundtrack

Man of Steel
Man of Steel(2013)
½

Very disappointed : they tried to cram too much story into too short a film, the technology or overall design theme doesn't make sense.

The East

That's the third strike in a row for Brit Marling as actress and co-writer. After Sound of my Voice and Another Earth, Brit departs from science fiction but continues to provoke us and ask tough questions with this suspenseful espionage thriller. I'm actually a bit surprised by the low attention it got, given the comparatively fast pace and familiar form this film adopts.

500 Days of Summer

It almost never happens to me, but I couldn't finish. I can't really pinpoint why, I just couldn't focus on the story

Little Fish
Little Fish(2006)

Thought the plot was a bit messy, good acting otherwise.

The Life of Another

Some funny moments but the acting felt off most of the time

Arbitrage
Arbitrage(2012)

Too cold for my taste

The Hunger Games

For once, I thought the film was better than the book !
To be honest, I wasn't really convinced by the book when I read it. I thought the society and the fight game in particular felt kind of absurd or insufficiently explained.
The film doesn't invent any new back story that explain the society better. But the screen allows the story to take life. And Jennifer Lawrence is superb.

Black Swan
Black Swan(2010)

Too weird for my taste, great acting though

Looper
Looper(2012)

Good sci-fi, well scripted, well acted. Plus ... Emily Blunt (what can I say...)

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Feels overstretch, but it still packs a visual Uppercut !

Chalet Girl
Chalet Girl(2011)

Nothing really new, but RomCom as enjoyable as this are hard to find.

Elizabeth
Elizabeth(1998)

A large part of the film felt ridiculous and i don't really know if the screenplay or the director are to blame. Probably both, but it was worth watching just to see how Cate Blanchett enact the transformation of the queen from an ingenue into ruthless ruler

Marvel's The Avengers
½

Robert Downey Jr is the man

Warm Bodies
Warm Bodies(2013)
½

Funny, witty, unusual point of view for a zombie film, heart warming, etc
A good film

Brave
Brave(2012)

nice visuals but weak plot

The Adjustment Bureau

What would Hollywood do without P. K. Dick ! ... or Emily Blunt. The sci-fi story is pretty interesting, even if it felt a little under-used in terms of special effect. But the main attraction is the chemistry between Emily and Matt Damon, they are just mesmerizing with their seemingly offhanded remarks they keep throwing at each other like the rest of the world (or the camera for that matter) wasn't even there.

The Young Victoria

A little too sweet at times, but it's well filmed, well acted and what can I say ... Emily Blunt

My Summer of Love

I wasn't taken by the story, but the acting is really good and some scenes are absolutely beautiful!

Terminator Salvation

Sucky plot, cheesy dialogs, doesn't live up to it's predecessors.

Another Earth

The mood gets pretty bleak at times, but i liked the story (even though it doesn't have much to do with the title and how it's advertised in the trailer). And Brit Marling is a revelation !

Margin Call
Margin Call(2011)

Peter : Are you sure it's the only ... or the right thing to do ?
Sam : For who ?
Peter : I'm not sure.
Sam : Neither am I.
A riveting film about the subprime crisis!

Caché
Caché(2005)

Disappointed by acting (especially Auteuil's), dialogs and an unfinished feeling at the end

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
½

The ending was bad on so many level ! It basically says : however bad you mess up, don't worry, you'll just have to make a cheesy 2 min speech at the end and all will be forgotten (including the worldwide bankruptcy).

Oldboy

Harry: Still gay?
Gay Perry: Me? No. I'm knee-deep in pussy. I just like the name so much, I can't get rid of it.

3-Iron
3-Iron(2004)
½

Beautiful, touching, smart, harsh at times too. It's amazing the number of adjectives that pop to mind for a film whose two protagonist never speak, but dull isn't one of them : their acting and the camera work tells this poetic story much more effectively than any dialog would have. A must see

Into the Wild
½

Inspiring story and beautiful pictures.
But some people seem to forget that one of the message of the movie is that, ultimately, social isolation doesn't lead to happiness

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Great story and the apes look wickedly true and truly wicked

Once
Once(2007)

Beautiful touching, and one of the few musical I know that doesn't feel contrived

Dune
Dune(1984)
½

It's probably a product of it's time but I think Lynch wasted this science fiction master piece and turned it into this claustrophobic film full of caricatures

Three Colors: White (Trzy kolory: Bialy) (Trois Couleurs: Blanc)

Didn't like it as much as the other two. Too bleak for me maybe. Still a good film though

Incredible acting from the lead and some of the supporting cast. Some cool scenery too.

Catfish
Catfish(2010)

Weird, queasy, unnerving but still worth a watch

Sucker Punch
Sucker Punch(2011)

I'm not sure what scenes were added between the film shown to the critics and the extended version I saw, but it must have had most of the good stuff because I thought this film ROCKED!
First, this film is original which is rare enough among today's films. It really is a feast for the eye both thanks to the gorgeous (and gorgeously scantly dressed) actresses and the visual effects. Some fights scenes do feel fake or a bit too long but most are stunning and the story with it's different layers and it's final twist was much more subtle than what I was expecting especially after reading a few reviews from the press.
The soundtrack was another great surprise : unlike the collection of hit or hype songs usually jammed together for new Box Office contenders this soundtrack really resonates with what is shown onscreen, some of the cast lending their voices to cover half of the track-list while the rest sounds like they have been written specially for the film. The rendering of "Where Is My Mind?" featuring Emily (starring as Babydoll in the film) is especially cool and "à propos".

Ondine
Ondine(2010)

Don't be fooled by the poster. This beautiful movie easily overcome it's "hard to swallow" plot with great acting and creates a kind of surreal atmosphere that will transport you into the aerie fog of Ireland shores

Aberdeen

Beautiful music, terrific acting from the 4 main characters, a very touching movie.

Iron Man
Iron Man(2008)

Robert Downey Jr. just cracks me up, whatever he plays.

Tropic Thunder

Robert Downey Jr rules!

The Dark Knight
½

Heath Ledger's performance is awesome ! The rest ... I don't really know, maybe batman is too serious a character for me, or maybe the actor doesn't have the charisma to pull it off.

Waterworld
Waterworld(1995)

Far below the book. The smokers just look stupid. But the idea is so cool and some landscape (or seascape?) look amazing

City of Angels

Doesn't add anything to the original, it's just less poetic

Australia
Australia(2008)

feels like an ad

Out of Sight
Out of Sight(1998)

The scene with Lopez and Clooney in the trunk is one of my all-time favourite

Mr. & Mrs. Smith
½

That's chemistry!

Serenity
Serenity(2005)

Funny and some very cool fight scenes.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
½

plot feels fake and the part about the war between the gods seems absurd

Twilight
Twilight(2008)

A let down compared to the book. No sense of fun between the 2 protagonist and crappy special effects (they should know how to make actors leap in a realistic way by now!)

Fish Tank
Fish Tank(2010)

Really immersing movie. Complex characters and superb acting from new actress Katie Jarvis

The Day the Earth Stood Still
½

Could have been better but i really like the actors

Glengarry Glen Ross

Waste of acting talent

Next
Next(2007)

Good idea but crappy ending

Everyone Says I Love You

I guess musicals don't work for me

Dünyayi kurtaran adam (The Man Who Saves the World) (Turkish Star Wars)

The worst film ever! No crappy Van Damme even come close to this masterpiece. A must-see!

Imagine Me & You
½

Lena Headey is superb in this otherwise rather bland romcom

Three Colors: Blue (Trois Couleurs: Bleu)

Few movies have touched me the way this one does. Simple and beautiful.

Essaye-moi
Essaye-moi(2006)

Weird, funny and endearing.

The Virgin Suicides
½

Beautiful, but no effort made to make it believable

Inglourious Basterds
½

A little disappointing compared to other Tarantino movies. Not as original or funny as the others

The Time Traveler's Wife

A let down compared to the book. Eric Bana totally miscast!
