- I go by the name Derek. I'm a twenty year-old male, about to turn 21. My life isn't exactly typical. I watch films rather obsessively, and some may find that as a bad thing. I enjoy it more than anything else, so why should I stop? It's a passion, pure and simple. I have very high standards for film, in that it must make a huge impression on me if I'm to give it 5, or even 4 stars. Genres differ my rating scale. Example: Crank. That film clearly was made with intentions to entertain the crap out of people, and obviously isn't very technically sound. So, I notice what the filmmaker was going for, hence the 4.5 star rating. You have to look at the director's intentions before immediately giving your voice about it. With technically proficient films filled with great substance, acting, concepts, screenplay, and meaning, (Example: Goodfellas) I respect and adore to a much larger extent. Yes, entertainment value is very important. But you need every aspect to fire on all cylinders to create a masterpiece. Some films entertain me largely, and I may give it a relatively high star rating. Those I would consider as guilty pleasures. I am interested in subjects other than film, but not passionate about anything else, really. I enjoy writing short stories, film reviews, and occasionally ranting in a notebook of some sort. I'm a sports junkie who loves most sports, excluding certain ones: golf, tennis, nascar, etc. I love to watch baseball, hockey, basketball, football, and the UFC, and consider those things my second love. I also play a good amount of fantasy sports which I hold very close to my heart. :) I studied a martial art called Muay Thai for over a year, stopped going for awhile, and am on a "break", if you will. That is also something I still have love for. I play video games rarely, with the occasional run at MLB 2K10 or 11m but have really drifted away from that aspect of entertainment.
