Jack Perry's Movie Ratings - Rotten Tomatoes

Movie Ratings and Reviews

Fascinating. The cast ages 12 years in the course of the movie. The editing is flawless. The story is profound. It is though-provoking and helps one deal with the "quick passing of life and time." Watch it - savor life.

The Wolf of Wall Street

There are no likable charters in this film. I found it entertaining but limiting. It is a shameful reminder that anyone with no morals can succeed on Wall Street - and when they get caught, basically get a slap on the wrist. It explores what is wrong with the greed culture and America.

But taken as a picture of what it was like in the late 80s un-regfulated Wall Street, it is entertaining.

Being John Malkovich

I finally watched it from start to finish. Now it makes a bit more sense - but I am still confused. But I like it. Suspend reality and just enjoy. Malkovich is quite good in his bizarre role - and Charlie Sheen shows up. Plus, the absurdity of puppets is funny and creepy.

47 Ronin
47 Ronin(2013)

Fantastic visuals. Basic story. But enjoyable. It has a brutal, violent ending but definitely worth seeing. Keanu is good.

American Hustle

Critics went way too overboard for this David O. Russell period piece. I enjoyed it and found the zooming in and out plus the narration strengths. But overall it was good but not great.

I enjoyed it. But it didn't blow me away like so many critics (98%?). Sandra Bullock is quite good and is basically in every scene. Clooney is around for a while and there is no one else...

Blue Jasmine
Blue Jasmine(2013)

Cate Blanchett deserves the Oscar. She is perfectly cast and pulls it off brilliantly. The entire cast is wonderful and this is another excellent Woody Allen view on modern society.

Kutcher is pretty good as Steve Jobs. I know a lot of critics want to hate, but his performance was good. What was lacking in the movie was the script was a bit slow. Plus the movie ended a bit abruptly.

Great premise. Must pay attention, Enjoyable but at times it felt like a lecture. I like the "chaos' theory of how one action can multiply and be the cause of disaster. Slow in parts. Too many story lines.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Wanted it to be funnier. Some parts good.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Abrams has done an excellent job of expanding the original characters but also keeping true to the mythology of Star Trek. The writers did an amazing job with the characters and there were several winks back to the original series and one of the movies. Compelling for those new to the story and also a winner for those fans who have seen every one of the original 79 episodes multiple times.

Zero Dark Thirty

Worth watching. But as with ANY movie, please don't take this as the truth. It is a movie, based on real events and people. But it is sensationalized to tell a story. Good entertainment. I did find the "insane woman CIA agent that no one else will listen to" character a bit un-original. HOMELAND does it better.

Silver Linings Playbook

I was depressed for the first 3/4 of the movie. But the ending is worth it. Great acting. DeNiro should win Oscar. I want to read the book now to see how it differs.

The Five-Year Engagement

I like the actors, But we put this movie on and only could watch 20 minutes before we stopped. Then we put on HOMELAND and felt better.

Should win Oscar for Best Picture and Daniel Day Lewis for Best Actor. Historically accurate and a great lesson in politics. Brilliantly conveys history and how much Lincoln had to struggle to accomplish great deeds.

The Blues Brothers

"It's dark and we're wearing sunglasses." Sit back and enjoy the comedic talents of Belushi and Aykroyd in their prime. The plot is weak (like the Good Ole Boys were so late for the gig at Bob's Country Bunker that the Blues Brothers actually saved Bob from an angry crowd) but who cares? Great musicians like Aretha, Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Cab Calloway, James Brown & The Blues Brothers Band make for a treat. Plus the dozens of cameos make this worth seeing dozen times.

Ben Affleck continues to direct wonderful movies. He deserves more credit. Although you know they get out successfully, it is still a thriller. Based on a true story sprinkled with real footage at the end and the beginning. A good history lesson and a wonderful movie.

I am always interested in time-travel movies and books. A new twist and worth seeing. Don't try to think too deep and let the story unfold. running time 1hr 58min. I could ave watched it for 2hr 58min. Go see it!

MacFarlane is a genius. This movie was worth seeing and funny in parts, but not as good as expected.

Gere is perfectly cast as an amoral billionaire. A slice of how the 1% does what they want. Throw in a dead artist, an innocent man, and a family in crisis. Worth seeing. Gere deserves Oscar nom.

The Big Lebowski

After years of watching pieces of this cult classic and hearing people quote The Dude, I finally watched it from beginning to end. Fun. Engaging. Worth watching again. I think I need to see it many more times to fully endorse it's genius.

In Time
In Time(2011)

Better than expected given the 36% critics rating. Entertaining sci-fi except a few holes -- like why didn't they add more time when they could?

Friends With Kids

Enjoyable. But I found myself wishing the supporting actors were in more scenes and the two stars were not. Would have been better if the leads were cast with more likable actors. Jon Hamm is a good drunk a-hole.

The Other F Word

Not every father in this doc is interesting. I found Everclear's Art Alexakis the most fascinating. He acoustic version of FATHER OF MINE is amazing. That alone is worth seeing the movie.

Marvel's The Avengers

Enormous hype. Typical story of battling aliens and NYC being destroyed. MUST STOP THEM! But it works. Entertaining and the superheroes do all mesh well.

Ben Stiller & Owen Wilson have made a series of funny movies. This is not the best they have made but it is entertaining. Worth watching if you are a fan.

Fast Times At Ridgemont High

Sean Penn once had a sense of humor! Classic growing up in suburbia in the America in the 1980s. Great characters, music and just a joy to watch. Ray Walston as Mr.Hand is great...

Inglourious Basterds

It gets better with a couple of viewings. Over the top but fun to watch.

An amazing movie. If you have not seen it, do so. It is ultra-violent but so damn powerful. The ending scenes with Layla playing in the background is pure genius.

Not truthful enough for the baseball fan in me. I wanted to like it better, but I was hoping for a story closer to the reality. But, I understand why the facts needed to be altered. Too much brooding. Slow paced. Pitt and Hill were entertaining though.

Independence Day

This film does not hold up over time. I watched again tonight after 15 years. It is corny. The effects that were top at the time, look cheesy. Predictable and routine plot.

The Ides of March

Kept my interest through and worth seeing. But a lot of talk and close-ups. Plus although I am Progressive and agree with many of Clooney's character's beliefs, I even felt preached at too much.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Solid movie. I watched the Swedish version earlier and actually prefer it. Seemed more concise. Worth seeing although some rough scenes.

Blues Brothers 2000

I'm a huge Blues Brothers fan but found this one stale. No Belushi, no Blues Brothers. The only reason it gets 2 stars is the monster blues jam at end led by BB King, Eric Clapton, Bo Diddley and dozens of others.

Air America
Air America(1990)

Always aware of the film but never watched it. Finally did 20 years after it was made. Standard stuff, but enjoyable. Gibson & Downey sure look young.

The Descendants

One of the most depressing movies of 2011. Clooney is good. Hawaii is a wonderful back-drop. The lesson is just because you live in 'paradise' and have money, does not mean you are happy. It is worth seeing, but make sure you do something uplifting after.

Martha Marcy May Marlene

Abrupt ending was not satisfying. Parallel between cult-world and CT yuppie life very engrossing. Hawkes perfect as Koresh-Manson like figure.

Valley Girl
Valley Girl(1983)

Story is predictable. Acting ok. The music is top notch.

Toy Story
Toy Story(1995)

Classic characters. Favorite of my kids. I've seen it 100s of times with them. Love theme song by Randy Newman.

The Matrix
The Matrix(1999)

Original. Take the red pill Neo.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Great stuff. It is downhill from here but this is a high standard of excellence. Depp amazing- modeled off of Keith.

Excellent adaptation on the genesis story of Spider-Man. Fun.

Shrek 2
Shrek 2(2004)

Acceptable sequel.

Predictable. Wish it would have been more stylized.

The Help
The Help(2011)

Tough story but is good slice of American history told via fiction. Bryce deserves Oscar nom for one of this year's biggest villain. Minny's pie?

Take a pill, your mind works at 100%, not the normal 20%. Movie starts out great, slows down in middle and ends well - but still need more answers.

Bad script. Horrible acting. I avoided because reviews were so bad, but it was on so I watched it. A waste of time. Laughable. Embarrassed that I watched.

Pulp Fiction
Pulp Fiction(1994)

Travolta & Jackson are great. Music rocks. Dialogue is clever. Should have won Best Picture. Love the 'full circle' where the movie starts and ends in diner.

The Hangover
The Hangover(2009)

Original. The final scene going through the photos is so damn funny. See it.

Funny, sense of humor. but lots of blood and gore for zombie fans. Bill Murray cameo is cool. Worth seeing.

Captain America: The First Avenger

Marvel knows how to tie it all together. Excellent 'steam punk' like machines and feel combined with evil Nazi-like characters. You must watch through the end of the credits.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I felt I didn't need the sub-titles because it was so well-acted. Noomi Rapace as Lizabeth is Oscar-worthy.

Apocalypse Now

Brilliant. Everyone is insane. Music excellent. "I love the smell of napalm in the morning." Everyone knows that line.

Hot Tub Time Machine

Funny moments. Worth seeing. But thought it would be funnier.

Winnie the Pooh

Classic story. I fell asleep. But 3-year old loved it. So, maybe I should go higher? Good ad for merchandise. We bought a Piglet plush from Disney Store today. They should sell them in the lobby of the theater.

The Adjustment Bureau

Original. Loved the "life plan books." Philip K. Dick story. Damon & Blunt ok. Would still like more movies with "The A Bureau." Hats cool.

Source Code
Source Code(2011)

It's not time travel to change the events ~ but reliving a section of the past. Good twist on the time travel genre. Happy Ending?

Tropic Thunder

Parts are kinda stupid, but overall some very good scenes.

The Departed
The Departed(2006)

Complicated. Amazing cast.

I wanted to like this movie better. Freeman convincing as Mandela. But the story just never broke through for me.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Boris Karloff is perfect. I've seen it at least 100 times.

There's Something About Mary

Ben Stiller - Cameron Diaz 'hair gel' scene classic. Funny.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Michael Bay spends 1/3 of the movie destroying Chicago. It's fun. It's loud. It's funny. I like the revising of history. It's as advertised.

Once Upon a Time in the West

Brilliant. Created a genre. Must see. Fonda great as villain. Music wonderful. Harmonica.

Green Zone
Green Zone(2010)

WMDs were never in Iraq. Compelling movie that hits the right political notes. Harsh on Bush Administration - but fair. Too far fetched at end and chase scenes too long.

Excellent movie. What more can I add? Has anyone NOT seen?

Midnight in Paris

I can hear Woody's words through Owen Wilson. Wilson is excellent as an awkward American writer who time travels back to 1920's Paris. Its fun seeing him randomly run into Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Picasso, Dali etc. Woody Allen + Time-Travel + Writing makes for an enjoyable flick. "Live in the present and not pine for a different times - the Golden Era is now." I especially liked Wilson's wife's right-wing family - showed the idiocy of the Tea Party.

The Godfather

What can I add? If you've never seen it, I envy you for you are in for a treat. Then you've got 2 and 3 to enjoy.

Pink Floyd - The Wall

Only for Pink Floyd fans. It's a fucked up world Pink lives in. Geldof is amazing and born for the role.

Tron Legacy
Tron Legacy(2010)

Jeff Bridges playing Flynn and also Rooster Cogburn in the same year was bizarre. I liked him here. Strange but fun and harmless sic-fi. Wanted it to be better.

The King's Speech

Geoffrey Rush is brilliant. A bit slow but worthy.

True Grit
True Grit(2010)

Jeff Bridges does a wonderful job but some of the time I thought he was Karl from Swingblade. Hailee Steinfeld should have won the Oscar.

The Hangover Part II

It is impossible to match the brilliance of HANGOVER, so this sequel was compared to a classic. But it was enjoyable although the plot was similar. Some good scenes. Enjoyable - just don't expect lightning to strike twice.

Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre(2011)

Fine adaptation. Strictly for fans of JANE EYRE. Gloomy.

State of Play

The premise is intriguing. The potential clash between old school journalism and new blog based journalism was promising. The political scandal always good. But it just misses. Still enjoyable.
