KJ's Review of Only God Forgives
Only God Forgives(2013)
Really? Is this what we get from Director Nicolas Winding Refn? After "Drive" was released, I expected a brilliant new Auteurist Art House filmmaker, but apparently not. "Only God Forgives" is a boring as watching someone walk in circles for hours and speaking a few lines of dialogue, oh wait, that is exactly what this film is. Ryan Gosling stars in this film, and to be honest, he has far too much screen time, because besides the climax of the film, he really is not the main character that should be focussed on. It is the most basic revenge story ever told, and in stylistic ways that the average filmgoer will never be able to fully comprehend. I admire that this director can take what is in his head and place it on the screen, but when he is the only person who really get's what is going on for the full 85 minutes, there is a huge problem. This film, (even though simple) is very very hard to follow. I wanted this film to be another masterpiece, but it's just awful. Sure the visuals are beautiful and the camerawork is great, but that will not save this film. "Only God Forgives" misses every mark in the book!
