KJ's Review of White House Down
White House Down(2013)
Dumb, poorly scripted, oddly edited, and not taking itself seriously enough, "White House Down" tries way too hard to be entertaining with it's premise, and most of the time it just comes off as comical. It has it's moments of sheer subtly and for a few moments throughout the film you can begin to feel for the characters, but the cheeky sense of humour the film has, just does not fit, especially with the actors delivering the lines. These actors clearly deserve a better role than in this film and Roland Emmerich has made himself out to be a half-wit filmmaker who has visual talent, wasted on dumb plots and poor dialogue. I really wanted to enjoy this film, but sucking up to the president and having your daughter held hostage to build tension for the movie brings out every cliche in the book. Halfway through this film I decided to shut my brain off and laugh even when I wasn't supposed to, because I just couldn't take it seriously enough. It tries too hard in it's directing, editing, writing, while still holding strong on the performance side. Don't get me wrong, there are nice moments with Tatum and Foxx and the villains have fine motivations, but it just should have worked better. Kind of disappointed, but my expectations were low, because it's an Emmerich film.
