KJ's Review of Kick-Ass 2
Unlike the first film, "Kick-Ass 2" lacks genuine laughs, a good story, and the charm that made the first such a loveable picture. Nodding to pop-culture and overly violent films, the first "Kick-Ass" was a sheer masterful phenomenon, because it did these things to perfection, while this film overdoes everything in almost every aspect. The film starts off fine with some great laughs and we learn where all the characters ended up after the aftermath of the first, but then it takes a turn for the worse, calling itself a sequel and breaking the fourth wall twice, and having pointless new characters that really do nothing to advance the story, not to mention the horrid amount of re-casting of characters they did. The villain sub-plot falls into every cliche in the book and the dialogue seems like it was written by a high school girl, which they captured perfectly by the way. This film focusses on too much teen drama with Mindy and strays very far away from it's title. This is not a "Kick-Ass" movie until about 3 quarters through the film. It all just felt lazy to me and didn't live up to my expectations in any way. The visuals are cheesier, the gags are dumber, characters die without any remorse, and there are cliches around every corner, unintentionally this time. "Kick-Ass 2" is very underwhelming... But, it has it's moments of entertainment (namely, a certain police pile-up which was very very fresh and awesome to watch) so I won't call it a bad film per say, it's just nothing too special.
