Super 8(2011)

"Super 8" hits theaters this weekend. The film has built up a lot of hype, but is it worth a trip to the multiplex? Paul Chambers has a review.

WHAT WE NEED IS A GOOD SUMMER MOVIE. "SUPER 8" IS PRETTY CLOSE. YES, THE STORY IS FAR FROM PERFECT. BUT WHAT DIRECTOR J-J ABRAMS DOES IS GET GREAT PERFORMANCES OUT OF HIS YOUNG ACTORS.

NEVER MIND THE PLOT HOLES, THE DOZENS OF UNANSWERED QUESTIONS AND THE ABANDONMENT OF LOGIC. YES, THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT: JOEL COURTNEY, ELLE FANNING AND RILEY GRIFFITHS AMONG OTHERS. THEY ARE ALL MAKING AN 8MM ZOMBIE FLICK AT A RURAL RAILWAY STATION WHEN THEY WITNESS SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY.

SOMETHING GETS OUT OF THE TRAIN, AND IT'S NOT VERY HAPPY. PEOPLE IN THE SMALL OHIO TOWN START DISAPPEARING. AND, IT'S UP TO THE KIDS TO SOLVE THE MYSTERY.

THE FILM MAY BE DIRECTED BY ABRAMS BUT IT HAS THE DEFINITE STAMP OF EXECUTIVE PRODUCER STEVEN SPIELBERG ON IT. IN THIS CASE, THAT'S A NEGATIVE. BECAUSE ABRAMS COULD HAVE USED A NEW SCRIPT WITH A STORY THAT MAKES SENSE. WHY WAS THE GOVERNMENT TRANSPORTING THE MONSTER? WHY WAS THE FILM SET IN 1979 WHEN IT COULD HAVE EASILY TAKEN PLACE IN PRESENT DAY?

WELL, IT'S THE SUMMER MOVIE SEASON AND I'M NOT GOING TO LET THAT BOTHER ME. GOOD ACTION, GOOD ACTING, AND WELL-DIRECTED WITH PLENTY OF SUSPENSE. ON MY SCALE OF ONE TO TEN, "SUPER 8" RATES A "SEVEN." I'M PAUL CHAMBERS REPORTING.
