Contagion
Contagion(2011)
½

Here's a movie that shouldn't be missed. "Contagion" is a smart, fast-moving medical thriller about a worldwide viral pandemic. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, this film with all-star cast, is riveting from start to finish, and it feels so real. You could very well imagine this is the way the world would handle a lethal airborne virus that kills within days. There's something very clinical about the way Soderbergh presents the story. But, just when you think it's going to become some kind of docu-drama, the director slams you back to the ground with human emotion and suffering. Matt Damon's performance is particulary memorable. His character is married to one of the virus' first victims, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. Damon nails it. He brings world-weariness and paternal instincts to the role, and you geniunely care about his character. In fact, the cast is uniformly excellent and also includes Marion Cotillard, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law and Kate Winslet. "Contagion" is one of the best films I've seen so far in 2011. Grade: A-
Paul Chambers, CNN film critic, Atlanta

Final Destination 5

"Final Destination 5" is exactly like the four films that went before it. Nothing has changed. That means it's probably going to make money. As a lifelong horror fan, I know exactly what I'm getting when I buy a ticket. People cheat death, and then death catches up with them. There is no bad guy, no satanic spirit...just fate. And, of course, the complex set-ups of each death that remind me of the old Mousetrap game I played when I was a kid. Nothing wrong with a well-made horror movie, and FD5 makes the grade. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Super 8
Super 8(2011)
½

"Super 8" hits theaters this weekend. The film has built up a lot of hype, but is it worth a trip to the multiplex? Paul Chambers has a review.

--TRACK--

WHAT WE NEED IS A GOOD SUMMER MOVIE. "SUPER 8" IS PRETTY CLOSE. YES, THE STORY IS FAR FROM PERFECT. BUT WHAT DIRECTOR J-J ABRAMS DOES IS GET GREAT PERFORMANCES OUT OF HIS YOUNG ACTORS.

NEVER MIND THE PLOT HOLES, THE DOZENS OF UNANSWERED QUESTIONS AND THE ABANDONMENT OF LOGIC. YES, THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT: JOEL COURTNEY, ELLE FANNING AND RILEY GRIFFITHS AMONG OTHERS. THEY ARE ALL MAKING AN 8MM ZOMBIE FLICK AT A RURAL RAILWAY STATION WHEN THEY WITNESS SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY.

--NATS--

07501888 Super 8/Clip 1 (TRAIN DERAILMENT SEQUENCE)

--TRACK--

SOMETHING GETS OUT OF THE TRAIN, AND IT'S NOT VERY HAPPY. PEOPLE IN THE SMALL OHIO TOWN START DISAPPEARING. AND, IT'S UP TO THE KIDS TO SOLVE THE MYSTERY.

THE FILM MAY BE DIRECTED BY ABRAMS BUT IT HAS THE DEFINITE STAMP OF EXECUTIVE PRODUCER STEVEN SPIELBERG ON IT. IN THIS CASE, THAT'S A NEGATIVE. BECAUSE ABRAMS COULD HAVE USED A NEW SCRIPT WITH A STORY THAT MAKES SENSE. WHY WAS THE GOVERNMENT TRANSPORTING THE MONSTER? WHY WAS THE FILM SET IN 1979 WHEN IT COULD HAVE EASILY TAKEN PLACE IN PRESENT DAY?

WELL, IT'S THE SUMMER MOVIE SEASON AND I'M NOT GOING TO LET THAT BOTHER ME. GOOD ACTION, GOOD ACTING, AND WELL-DIRECTED WITH PLENTY OF SUSPENSE. ON MY SCALE OF ONE TO TEN, "SUPER 8" RATES A "SEVEN." I'M PAUL CHAMBERS REPORTING.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
½

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" (in theaters) Navigation is slow and predictable, at first. Ending is confused and contrived. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Restrepo
Restrepo(2010)
½

"Restrepo" puts a new face on the war in Afghanistan. A decidedly American face. The filmmakers take their cameras to one of the most remote, dangerous U.S. outposts in this wartorn country. The bullets whiz by as we get up close to real American soldiers putting their lives on the line. We find out plenty about what makes these brave men tick. "Restrepo" is powerful, sobering and oh so very real. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Animal Kingdom

"ANIMAL KINGDOM" IS THE STORY OF BANK-ROBBING BROTHERS DOWN UNDER AND HOW THEY ARE ULTIMATELY UNDONE. BEN MENDELSOHN IS THE BROTHER WHO WANTS TO GET OUT OF THE BAD GUY BUSINESS.

(CLIP)

"ANIMAL KINGDOM" IS ALSO NOTABLE FOR THE PERFORMANCE OF GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINEE JACKI WEAVER AS THE MA BARKER OF THIS CRIME FAMILY. WEAVER'S CHARACTER IS CERTAINLY NO CRIMINAL MASTERMIND, BUT SHE'S RUTHLESS WHEN IT COMES TO KEEPING HER BOYS OUT OF JAIL. "ANIMAL KINGDOM" IS FAR FROM PERFECT, BUT THE FAMILY DRAMA WILL KEEP YOUR INTEREST AS IT PLAYS OUT TO ITS BLOODY CONCLUSION. PAUL CHAMBERS, CNN.

Death Race 2
Death Race 2(2010)
½

new on dvd and blu-ray: "death race 2." cnn video critic paul chambers has a review.

###

"death race 2" is a prequel to 2008's forgettable b-action flick starring jason statham. but, statham didn't show up for this mindless tale of convicts killing each other as a way to boost tv ratings.

(clip)

luke goss subs for statham as the best driver ever put behind prison bars. the movie is unrated with the usual cgi stunts, nothing new. hard core action fans might give it a play. for the rest of us, "death race 2" runs out of gas before it even gets started. paul chambers, cnn.

No Strings Attached
½

only one new film in wide release this weekend. cnn film critic paul chambers has a review of "no strings attached."

###

natalie portman and ashton kutcher are a couple, but not in the traditional sense. in "no strings attached" they agree to have sex and nothing more.

(clip)

it's obvious kutcher's character wants more out of the relationship. and, it becomes apparent almost from the start how this whole thing is going to end. a lightweight romantic comedy has no place else to go and almost everyone that sees it will know it. ivan reitman handles the directing chores with his usual mainstream skills, and it's pleasant enough as both of the principals get abundant comedic advice from their circle of friends. but, ultimately...."no strings attached" is completely forgettable. c-minus. paul chambers, cnn.

Piranha 3-D
Piranha 3-D(2010)

This action-thriller will eat you alive. CNN's Paul Chambers has a review of "Piranha 3D," new on video this weekend.

###

"How fast can you swim?" Finally, something new for your Blu-ray 3d player and 3d television. "Piranha 3d" offers a boat load of thrills.

(clip)

"piranha 3d" has biting comedy, gorgeous locations, a great cast and really scary action. 20-thousand spring breakers converge on a beautiful canyon lake, where a small earthquake has unleashed pre-historic man-eating fish. and, boy do they like to eat. "piranha" comes in a blu-ray 3d, 2d blu-ray and dvd. it is definitely not for kids or the squeamish. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Resident Evil: Afterlife

milla jovovich is back as alice, the zombie-kicking survivor gal in yet another sequel to a movie based on a video game.

(clip)

alice is trying her best to organize survivors, but can't seem to get the knack of it. every human she meets dies. the best thing she could ever do for anyone lucky enough "not" to have the virus is move on. of course, then we wouldn't have a movie. "resident evil: afterlife" is watchable at times. then, the story breaks down and you lose patience. there are plenty of action scenes, so if that's what you seek. go for it. the film is available december 28th on dvd, blu-ray and even blu-ray 3d. paul chambers, cnn.

Salt
Salt(2010)

"salt" and "silly" both begin with a "s." that couldn't be a coincidence, right? angelina jolie stars as a cia operative on the run after a russian defector accuses her of being a double agent.

(film clip)

"salt" will raise the blood pressure of anyone who demands just a tiny bit of logic with their spy thriller. getting to the end of the movie is the worst part. that's when you look back at what happened and wonder how could the screenwriters be that clueless. jolie brings a little charisma to the title role. but, they should have covered up her toothpick thin legs in the climbing scene. three different versions of the film come on the disc, including an unrated director's cut. paul chambers, cnn.

Knight & Day
Knight & Day(2010)

"KNIGHT AND DAY" FEATURES TOM CRUISE AS A SILLY SUPER SPY AND CAMERON DIAZ AS AN ORDINARY WOMAN WHO, NOT BY CHOICE, IS THROWN INTO THE SPY'S CHAOTIC WORLD. IS HE A TRAITOR TO THE COUNTRY OR A SUPER PATRIOT? THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS THAT ARE UNINTERESTLY ANSWERED IN THIS FAILED ACTION COMEDY. "KNIGHT AND DAY" IS ABSURD WITHOUT BEING FUNNY. IT'S ALSO LACKING IN THE ONSCREEN CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT. ON VIDEO, THERE'S A BARE-BONES VERSION. A THREE DISC-BLU RAY COMBO AND A TWO-DISC HOLIDAY GIFT SET. PAUL CHAMBERS, CNN.

Avatar
Avatar(2009)

FIRST THERE WAS "AVATAR"

(CLIP)

THEN, "AVATAR: SPECIAL EDITION WITH EIGHT MINUTES OF ADDITIONAL FOOTAGE. NOW, ON BLU-RAY AND DVD, THERE "AVATAR: EXTENDED COLLECTOR'S EDITION WITH SIXTEEN MINUTES OF ADDITIONAL FOOTAGE INCLUDING AN ALTERNATE OPENING. THIS NEW VIDEO VERSION IS REMARKABLE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE A FAN OF THE FICTIONAL PLANET PANDORA AND JAMES CAMERON'S STORY-TELLING. THERE'S EIGHT HOURS OF NEW MATERIAL, INCLUDING 45 MINUTES OF DELETED SCENES. GUESS THAT MEANS THERE'LL BE AN "AVATAR: SPECIAL SPECIAL COLLECTOR'S EDITION" DOWN THE LINE. "AVATAR" LOOKS AMAZING ON BLU-RAY. IF THE PLOT WASN'T SO PEDESTRIAN, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT FILM. PAUL CHAMBERS, CNN.

The Last Exorcism
½

ONE OF THE NEW FILMS OPENING TODAY IS A CHILLER ABOUT A FAKE EXORCIST DOING BATTLE WITH WHAT COULD BE A REAL DEMON. CNN'S PAUL CHAMBERS HAS A REVIEW OF "THE LAST EXORCISM."

###

THE REVEREND COTTON MARCUS IS A FAKE. HE'S THE FIRST TO ADMIT IT. THE LIFELONG EXORCIST LOOKS AT HIS JOB AS MAKING PEOPLE FEEL BETTER BY EXORCISING WHAT HE'S NEVER ACTUALLY SEEN...A DEMON. IN "THE LAST EXORCISM," HE TAKES A DOCUMENTARY FILM CREW WITH HIM ON ONE OF HIS FAKE MISSIONS. HE ENCOUNTERS A TEENAGED GIRL WHO MAY BE THE REAL THING.

(FILM CLIP)

"THE LAST EXORCISM" IS ONE HECK OF A HORROR MOVIE. THE ENDING, HOWEVER, IS A MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT WITH THE LAST FIVE MINUTES REMINDING YOU TOO MUCH OF "THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT" MEETS "ROSEMARY'S BABY." BUT, GETTING TO THE END IS SCARY AND SO MUCH FUN. A "SEVEN" ON MY TEN POINT SCALE. PAUL CHAMBERS, CNN.

Sex and the City 2
½

This one is for the fans, not the critics.
"Sex and the City 2" has the "sparkle" moments that made the long-running TV show a hit.
But, it also has a fairly long runtime of 2 hours and 25 minutes. Most of it is set in Abu Dhabi, not in the city that made Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha famous-- the Big Apple.
The ladies have new problems: Carrie is worried about her marriage becoming a bore. Miranda has a misogynistic boss. Charlotte won't admit her two kids are driving her crazy. But Samantha-- is still-- well, Samantha, always looking for the next guy.
06732161 Sex City 2/ Apologies
(clip of Samantha staring at man riding up in desert)
Now, here's where "Sex and the City 2" might get into trouble... and it's not the racy sex scenes.
Some have criticized the film's portrayals of Muslims... for instance, when the women fly to the UAE, they encounter conservative, tenacious men... stereotypes, who want women, including our quartet, to be modest and well-behaved.
It seems they're out of luck with our heroines.
The question is-- will viewers be out of luck?
We'll see. The women are getting older, but for fans, they're still funny.
"Sex and the City 2" moves slowly at times, but it likely won't keep diehard fans from enjoying themselves.
On my scale of one to ten, "Sex and the City 2" rates a "five."
I'm Paul Chambers.

Five Fingers

A superior horror film from Spain. "Quarantine" was almost a shot-by-shot remake of this film. Genuine suspense, real horror and a back story that makes much more sense than the American version.

Flicka 2
Flicka 2(2010)

It may be on the farm, but "Flicka 2" is a breath of fresh air. Great values, good acting and very capable direction. This is a fine family film. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Iron Man 2
Iron Man 2(2010)

Not a bad followup to the original Iron Man. Good performances and plenty of first-rate action. Iron Man 2 is great fun. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Losers
The Losers(2010)

Violent, funny and worth the ride. Far from excellent, it's one of those movies that's just good enough to keep your interest. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Banlieue 13 - Ultimatum (District 13: Ultimatum)

Silly action with phony-looking stunts. And, the story? Don't get me started. Paul Chambers, CNN.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
½

After giving a great performance in "Watchmen," what was Jackie Earle Haley doing in this film, besides making a buck or two? Extremely disappointing remake and creepier than the original, but not in a good way. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Red Riding Trilogy
½

Three powerful movies about police corruption in Northern England had me squirming in my seat. The only complaint, and it's a small one, is the apparently authentic Yorkshire accents were hard to understand at times. English subtitles would help. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Bubble
Bubble(2006)

Finally got around to seeing this film and was impressed with Soderbergh's experimental style. This guy continues to be one of best directors around today. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Human Centipede (First Sequence)

Potentially this film could scar you for life. With that said, horror fans shouldn't miss the performance of Dieter Laser. Be warned, less gore than "Saw" but a hundred times more memorable. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Perfect Game
½

A very slow and terrible film. This little league baseball story is so full of holes, that even diehard fans of the game would be hard pressed to sit through it. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Messenger

Nice acting. Solid direction. Worth an investment of your time. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

One of the best whodunits in quite awhile. Despite the length, you want the story to go on after it's finished. Hope to see these characters again. A great film! Paul Chambers, CNN.

Repo Men
Repo Men(2010)
½

Not as bad as I heard it was. Plenty of horror violence, but the improbability of the story (i.e. only one company selling artificial organs) made it tough to take. It might make you want to surgically remove your money from the box office. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Clash of the Titans

Kept waiting for the kraken, and when it finally showed up, it was a big bore. Corny dialogue and lack of suspense make this a dull ride. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Hitchcock would be proud of this trainbound suspense thriller with Woody Harrelson playing against type. A first-rate story, great action and great direction. Take the trip! Paul Chambers, CNN.

Hot Tub Time Machine

Comedy is hard, real hard. Making stupid funny is even harder. Not nearly as good as "The Hangover," but I really laughed a lot. Nicely done and really gross. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Brooklyn's Finest
½

Call it "Training Day 2," but this film doesn't come close to Fuqua's previous effort. Paul Chambers, CNN

The White Ribbon (Das weisse Band)

Uninformative and frustrating tale of unrest in a pre-war German village. The ending will have you cursing the filmmakers on the way home...instead of asking questions about the subject matter. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Dead Snow (Død snø)

You gotta love a movie about Nazi zombies. Well, you don't have to love it, but this one is refreshingly gross. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Couples Retreat
½

A bit of a guilty pleasure. But, most of the humor falls flat. Interesting that it's a Vince Vaughn vehicle that doesn't give Vaughn enough to do. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant

What in the heck is going on here? Not scary, not funny. The story gets lost in the woods. Paul Chambers, CNN.

500 Days of Summer
½

Gimmicky love story that's not saved by its bittersweet ending. Acting is more than just cooing with your eyes. It seemed like 500 days alright. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Edge of Darkness

It worked for Denzel and Liam. Why not Mel? Losing a child gets an audience on the side of the hero faster than anything. Mel is in fine form. Stick to acting, buddy. Paul Chambers, CNN.

From Paris with Love
½

The movie tries to shock you with its twists and turns. What's really shocking is how an action flick with such a high body count could be so deadly boring. Travolta brings new meaning to the term, "ugly American." Paul Chambers, CNN.

Moon
Moon(2009)

Out of this world. A story that could easily have been from the early days of science fiction. It's a film that has a make-or-break lead role, and Sam Rockwell makes it an incredible journey. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Book of Eli

Truly the funniest movie of 2009. Yeah, bust-a-gut hilarious. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Before the Fall (Napola)

Quite a nice study of the Germany military schools where young men were most sheltered from the atrocities of World War II. The central character knows what's happening but instead focuses on a better future than his father had. But, still decisions must be made. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Zombieland
Zombieland(2009)
½

This is proof that horror movies can really be funny. It wasn't just the violent humor, but the little sidetrips for twinkies and Bill Murray's zombie makeup that sent this film into zombie heaven. Murray's best line is if he had any regrets and he said "Garfield." Paul Chambers, CNN.

Carriers
Carriers(2009)

A little more realistic than a zombie flick. Some renegade virus could make the world a "survival of the fittest" ordeal. A very interesting story with some nice reveals. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Breakfast on Pluto

Rambling romance about a man truely in love with himself. Cilian Murphy has great talent, but not in this loser directed by Neil Jordan. My advice to Murphy...speak up and stop mumbling. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Pontypool
Pontypool(2009)

The Salon
The Salon(2007)

Gosh, what a terrible movie. Stereotypes galore, and the humor falls flat. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Under the Same Moon

Story of seperated mother and child doesn't carry much emotional impact. Makes you wonder how much mi madre really cares. Turns into a road drama with the kid headed to Los Angeles. Just couldn't care for the characters. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Shake Hands with the Devil: The Journey of Romeo Dallaire
½

Documentary should have been more about what happened in Rwanda rather than just about his personal feelings and his return trip. Very one-side picture of a highly criticized UN official. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Up in the Air

Clooney is perfect, nothing more be said. "Up in the Air" is the best film of the year: smart, funny and well-directed. Get connected with this film, it's worth it. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Jennifer's Body
½

By the time we know what's wrong with Jennifer's body, we just don't care. Movie sucks the life out of horror fans. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Me and Orson Welles

Less Zac, more Christian would have been nice. As it stands, McKay's performance elevates this film to the stratosphere. Wildly entertaining. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Lovely Bones

You would expect better from Peter Jackson. Beautiful images, at times. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Hurt Locker

This film is better than any documentary I've seen on the Iraq war. It's so real, it's scary. Well-written well-acted, well-directed. Multiple Oscars possible. Paul Chambers, CNN.

A Serious Man

The Coen brothers lost all touch with the mainstream on this film. Nothing funny about "A Serious Man," just odd and off-putting. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Old Dogs
Old Dogs(2009)

It ain't as bad as you heard. I laughed a few times. Travolta and Williams are amusing. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon
½

Bella could go down in literature as one of the dullest, most self-obsessed geeks of all time. Pick a wolf, pick a vampire, pick someone in the animal kingdom, and get on with it.The first film was tolerable. "New Moon" just needs to go away quickly. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Ninja Assassin
½

Hey, how many ninja movies are there for comparison? Plenty of action and an interesting hero plus above-average special effects. I would recommend putting this film up against Citizen Kane, of course. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Blind Side

A movie that inspires. Sandra Bullock is refreshingly different and gives a superb performance. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Paranormal Activity
½

"Overrated, overhyped and so not scary." Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Burning Plain

Deadly dull and emotionally vacant story about two generations of adulterers. Burn, baby, burn. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Last Holiday
Last Holiday(2006)

Cartoonish at times, "Last Holiday" redeems itself with a sparkling performance by Queen Latifah. She makes the movie worth seeing. Paul Chambers, CNN.

2012
2012(2009)
½

If they had just put a decent story with these fabulous special effects, this could have really been something special. "2012" could have done without so many of its characters like those two guys on the Love Boat. The film reminds me of the Poseidon Adventure at times. If you go, go only for the special effects. They are great. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Pirate Radio (The Boat That Rocked)
½

The music rocks, this movie doesn't. Never rises above the sitcom level complete with stock characters you might have seen on shows like WKRP. Too bad, because the classic pop tunes used in the film are among my very favorites. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Box
The Box(2009)
½

The supreme being wants to have a chat. Well, don't stand for it. You'll just become a nose-bleeding zombie. This film, based on a Richard Matheson story, "Button, Button," is so lost by the third act that it becomes a bad joke with laugh out loud moments. And, this is from someone who liked the first 30 minutes. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Law Abiding Citizen
½

Entertaining, without making sense. Film tries to say something about the judicial system, but fails badly. Nevertheless, an intriguing idea. Paul Chambers, CNN.

World's Greatest Dad

Hit-and-miss black comedy about getting your 15 minutes of fame. The first act is so overdone that you want to bail, but it all comes together by the time you reach the very predictable ending. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Music From the Inside Out
½

A couple of moments worth watching with some insightful thoughts on what makes musicians tick. But, the overwhelming majority of the film does't inspire or entertain. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Killing Room
½

Going out on a limb to say I like this one. Interesting plot, though highly unlikely...even during the Bush Administration. A fair amount of suspense as well. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Drag Me to Hell
½

Loved the ending, but very little suspense or horror along the way. A tired, conventional plot. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Stepfather

This kind of film needs a "R" rating. Making it "PG-13" leaves even horror fans yawning. And, there's not enough drama or originality to keep anyone glued to this very poor remake. Just leaves you wanting the original. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Casanova
Casanova(2005)
½

Gets funny once it enters farce mode. Nothing special by the cast, including Ledger. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Girlfriend Experience

A successful experiment. Soderbergh's timing couldn't be better with the economic downturn and celebrity downfalls so much in the news these days. Good job!

Evilution
Evilution(2009)
½

Nothing original about this zombie/alien horror flick. Seen it all before. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Frayed
Frayed(2007)

Interesting start with some decent acting. But, ultimately predictable with a script in total confusion. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Ellie Parker
Ellie Parker(2005)

No one doubts Naomi Watts is photogenic, but this effort is very hard to sit through. Nearly impossible. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Duplicity
Duplicity(2009)

You gotta be flawless to tell a story out of sequence. This ain't no Memento. God, Julia is getting old. Paul Chambers, CNN.

State of Play
½

Just couldn't get enthusiastic about the twists and turns in this story of an investigative reporter on the trail of political bad guys. It just made me long for "All the President's Men." Paul Chambers, CNN.

Surveillance
Surveillance(2009)
½

Who could the killers be? Who cares? The pacing of this film is so slow that you stop caring long before the movie is over. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Julia
Julia(2009)
½

The plot is over-the-top, but Swinton makes you stay with the film long after the writer/director loses credibility. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Sunshine Cleaning
½

Offbeat, with terrific performances.

I Love You, Man

With a better script, this movie could have been REALLY funny, instead of moderately so. Paul Rudd definitely has a gift for comic acting. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Cheaper by the Dozen 2
½

The only good thing I can say is that it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Paul Chambers, CNN.

London to Brighton
½

Compelling at times, but material seems exploitive. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Informers
½

bleak, boring and bloated. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Orphan
Orphan(2009)

Nicely down horror flick with a great twist near the end. This is one evil child. Well-directed, too. Paul Chambers, CNN.

A Perfect Getaway
½

A movie that more than tips its hat to Hitchcock. "A Perfect Getaway" clues the audience in slowly about what's going on without giving the whole thing away. I can't wait to see this movie again. Wildly entertaining! Paul Chambers, CNN.

Mutant Chronicles

This movie is lost from the start and never finds its way. Plays like a video game with repetitive special effects and wooden dialogue. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Wyvern
Wyvern(2009)
½

I liked the fact that the small Alaskan town had no bad people getting set up to be eaten by the dragon. I get so tired of that stereotype in horror/slasher films. With a little more money for special effects and better writing, this film really could have worked liked "Tremors" did many years ago. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Cove
The Cove(2009)
½

It won't be a big hit in Japan, but this film is easily one of the best documentaries I've seen in awhile. Okay, it's one-sided, but who really wants to defend the slaughter of dolphins? I think this film will be a major contender in awards season. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Dragonball Evolution

Very lame adaptation of the graphic novel/manga. Kids aren't dumb. They want an intelligent screenplay. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Last House on the Left

Better than the original, but that's not saying much. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Wild Man of the Navidad

Film has some interesting characters, especially the non-actors. But, special effects and suspense just aren't there. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Steam Experiment (The Chaos Experiment)
½

Six people are steam-broiled in a locked-down sauna. Who could ask for better entertainment...not! Paul Chambers, CNN.

Memoirs of a Geisha
½

Chinese actors playing Japanese actors...the plot is long and tedius. and, you never get a sense of what a geisha really was, because of the characters in this film didn't fit the mold were told about in the dialogue. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Obsessed
Obsessed(2009)

So many holes in the plot, I stopped counting. A laugh riot, unintentional, of course. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
½

Quite an adventure, even for the casual Potter fan. Just a bit too long for my taste.

Into the Wild

A long trip, but worth the wait. Hirsch really is a star of the future. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Woody, you don't translate to Spain very well. What happened? You stink on toast. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Coraline
Coraline(2009)
½

What a weird and wonderful film! Absolutely loved it! Paul Chambers, CNN.

Driven to Kill

The worst mumbling by an actor since Colin Ferrell in "The New World." Steven Seagal is indescribably terrible. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Silent Venom
Silent Venom(2009)

One of the worst films I've seen in quite awhile. Don't even think about it. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Dead Wood
Dead Wood(2007)

Makes "The Blair Witch Project" look like "Citizen Kane." A horror film without any horror.

The Wrestler
The Wrestler(2008)
½

Any film that can make you feel the utter loneliness of a character like Mickey Rourke's is one that you can totally endorse. Yes, he's as good as they say. Paul Chambers, CNN

Defiance
Defiance(2009)
½

Good story, but loses its way dramatically by the end. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
½

Two stripes and you're out. Let's give these characters a rest.

Fast & Furious
½

Anything that was likeable about the original is lost here. A completely disposable action film. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Caller
The Caller(2008)
½

Painfully obvious where this film is going after just ten minutes. Poorly written, poorly conceived.

Fired Up
Fired Up(2009)

One or two laughs, but mostly a dud.

Come Away Home
½

Ignore the clunky screenplay and acute overacting, and you might like this family film. It's worth watching, especially for Paul Dooley and this young girl who plays his grandaughter.

Last Chance Harvey
½

Not a bad love story. Hoffman's sad sack composer is actually pretty good. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Sweet Land
Sweet Land(2006)

very sentimental film about a young German immigrant making a new life in America's heartland in the early 20th century. Great performances. Pacing could be a little better. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Carnivorous
Carnivorous(2008)

The special effects are too cheezy to be believed. Actually, would have been a good story, if the screenplay hadn't got in the way.

Ghosts of Goldfield

ultra low-budget spooker that fails to spook. Paul Chambers, CNN.

12 Rounds
12 Rounds(2009)

Terrorist plays mind games with a thick-headed cop in post-Katrina New Orleans. It had me counting rounds. When are we getting to Number 12????

Streets of Blood
½

Movie exploits the damage left behind by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. But, this violent story has a few moments here and there. Curtis Jackson is not bad, considering the screenplay. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Hideo Nakata's Kaidan
½

Very tame horror movie with not much happening. Boredom sets in long before the two hours is up.

Year One
Year One(2009)
½

One bad joke after another. Not even a guilty pleasure. Just mind-numbingly dumb.

Messengers 2: The Scarecrow

A disappointing prequel to "The Messengers." In fact, I couldn't make a connection at all to the original film. Who were the messengers and why didn't they get any screen time? Maybe it was the little girl with the slingblade in her back. Expected much better quality from Ghost House.

Echelon Conspiracy

Poorly written thriller about an internet security guy who doesn't know anything about text messaging. He blindly follows messages that come in on a cell phone someone shipped to him in Bangkok. Dumb from start to end. The make-up is horribly bad, except for Martin Sheen. Ving Rhames looked like something the cat dragged in. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Nicotina
Nicotina(2004)
½

Wow, finally this film is out on DVD. I missed its theatrical run, and that's too bad. It's a darkly funny caper film about amateur thieves in pursuit of a bag of diamonds. Great ensemble cast. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Push
Push(2009)

just saw "Push" on DVD and I'm not to pleased to see Dakota Fanning wearing a mini-mini skirt and getting drunk. It probably happens in real life, but it sure made me uneasy, exploiting the sexuality of a 12-year-old. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Unborn
The Unborn(2009)
½

I just watched the "unrated" version of "The Unborn." Exactly one-minute longer than the theatrical version. What's the point? Other than selling DVDs, of course.

The Haunting in Connecticut
½

Paul wishes movie studios wouldn't release "unrated" versions of PG-13 movies, unless there's something really different with the cut. Just watched an "unrated" version of "The Haunting in Connecticut" and it was not one-bit scarier than the version that played in theaters earlier this year. In fact, it probably had less than a minute of additional footage...if that much. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Horsemen
The Horsemen(2009)

"Horsemen" with Dennis Quaid as a detective investigating a series of grizzly murders. I solved the mystery early, but film was intriguing enough to hold your interest. Violence and story were similiar to "Seven" in some respects. "C+" Paul Chambers, CNN.

Public Enemies

Movie doesn't glamorize Dillinger at all. Just a well-told crime story. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Apollo 11: A Night To Remember
½

"Apollo 11: A Night to Remember" (Acorn Media Group)-This BBC production is an excellent look back at man's first steps on the moon from a uniquely British perspective. The 40th anniversary of the mission begins on July 16th, the day that Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins blasted off from Cape Canaveral into the history books. This documentary is hosted by Sir Patrick Moore, one of the key BBC journalists covering the mission. But, mostly it's archival footage condensed into a never-boring two hour re-visiting of those historic days. Grade "A."

Dark Streets
Dark Streets(2008)
½

"Dark Streets" (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment)-Not quite a musical, but with twelve original songs it's musically-driven. This film noir story set in the 1930's misfires from the very first frame. Gabriel Mann stars as a nightclub owner looking into the mysterious death of his father while have heated affairs with two sultry singers. "Dark Streets" doesn't even provide the guilty pleasures that made "The Cotton Club" so tolerable many years ago. "C-"

Two Lovers
Two Lovers(2008)

"Two Lovers" (Magnolia Home Entertainment)-Remember actor Joaquin Phoenix's bizarre appearance on "Late Night with David Letterman?" He had declared this was going to be his last movie and that he wanted to pursue hip-hop music. Well, actually, "Two Lovers" isn't a bad way to go leave the industry. This romantic drama is about a strange, lovesick young man living with his parents who gets not one, but two beautiful women to come into his life. One (Vinessa Shaw) is the smart choice. The other is a flighty, troubled woman deeply involved with a married man. Of course, Phoenix prefers Paltrow but romances both of them. "Two Lovers" is well-acted, well-written and well-directed. Enough said. "B".

Crossing Over
½

just watched the Harrison Ford immigration drama, "Crossing Over." It had some moments, but just didn't cut it. Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Hangover
The Hangover(2009)

Insanely funny from start to finish! Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3

"The Taking of Pelham 123"

denzel washington plays the transit official who deals with a subway train hijacker played by john travolta.
the 1974 version of "the taking of pelham 123" was a more straightforward story than the tony scott version. if you remember "enemy of the state"....you'll know that annoying high-on-caffeine directing style that scott frequently uses as a substitute for suspense. travolta and washington both look overweight and even a bit homely. nothing about this movie makes sense especially the dramatic faceoff between the hijacker and the transit agency desk jockey. paul chambers, cnn.
