Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

I ended up liking Sweeney Todd more than I thought I would. It wasn't as gory or graphic as I had imagined either, but it was violent and bloody for sure. The story was a perfect fit for Tim Burton. Dark, brooding and morbid. Everything he does best.

I also wondered how similar it was to the stage play, knowing nothing about it going in. I don't imagine the play was this gothic, but it worked in the movie. I thought Depp was good as always and I also loved Helena Bonham Carter. The story was as much about her charater as it was Sweeney. She was great. So were the young leads.

It was definately a different take on a musical. None of the songs were really memorable but they moved the story along well and fleshed out the characters. Starkly beautiful to look at, as most of Burtons movies like this are. Not really my taste in musicals, but I admire that it is something different and made with great skill and apparent care by all.

I'm not really sure what to think of Speed Racer after seeing it. The plot was too convoluted for its own good in spots, the dialogue was sometimes cheesey and gratuitous and the movie ran about 20 minutes too long. But the visuals were like nothing I have ever seen before and are done with such apparent joy that you can't help but marvel at them. It is quite stunning to look at despite getting somewhat repetitive.

This movie may be this generations Tron with its jaw dropping graphics. Also reminded me of the pod race in The Phantom Menace. As great as it sometimes looks, the movie never really delivers more than fancy visuals. But I did get caught up in its enthusiasm. Never has the term 'eye candy' been more appropriate. It looks so good initially and you really enjoy it, but you know later when you think about it, it's probably going to give you a stomach ache and leave you feeling empty.
