Yeah, I?m into bandwagons.

So ?Flight of The Conchords? was this huge TV sensation that EVERYONE seemed to love uncontrollably. Over and over I heard how brilliant and funny and fresh the show was and how it was going to change my entire universe once I got around to watching it. ?You haven?t seen it? That?s crazy! Unacceptable!? proclaimed my friend over lunch one day. ?Jemaine Clement has the biggest, luscious and most sensuous lips I?ve ever seen. I just want to suck on them. You need to watch that show.? I had the Season 1 DVD in my bag about an hour or so after hearing that passionate endorsement.

?Flight of The Conchords? is one of the most delightful, hilarious and fun things I?ve had the good fortune to be coerced and peer-pressured into watching. The dialogue is great, the songs are super funny, it?s INSANELY well produced in the areas of cinematography and art direction and it features a man by the name of Murray Hewitt who is (not) on his way to a dick meeting.

FOTC is one of the most visually impressive shows on television. The shifts between live action, studio, animation, claymation, stop motion (and even freaking super 8mm film) not only help to give the show a completely refreshing air of originality but also aids in enhancing the often spontaneous (and hilarious) musical numbers peppered throughout each episode. The production value is so, so high and innovative in a way that?s almost genius largely due to the fact that the ideas really aren?t that complex ? they?re just clever and executed flawlessly. Look up the song ?Leggy Blonde? if you want to see what I?m talking about.

I had a conversation with someone yesterday in which we tried to each pick our favourite FOTC song. It?s really hard. I?m rather partial to ?Rhymernoceros vs Hiphopopotamus?, a song that has me repeating lines like ?I?m the mother flippin?? and ?There ain?t no party like my nanna?s tea party!? at often inappropriate moments, but I?m also a big fan of ?The Most Beautiful Girl In The Room? and ?Business Time?. Jermaine Clement has, hands down, one of the best and sexiest voices I?ve ever heard. Go to youtube, look up ?Albi, The Racist Dragon? and loose yourself in the man?s ability to suck you in to a story about Jellybeans and badly burnt Albanians (??laughed the boy?).

This then brings me to what I like the very most about FOTC: the characters. Bret and Jemaine are both superb comic actors adept in the kind of deadpan that made shows like ?Arrested Development? so great. The things they say are almost funnier just because they?re so natural saying them. But, as good as these two might be (and they are good), the real star of the show is one Rhys Darby, aka Murray Hewitt. Murray is my hero. Practically everything that comes out of this mans mouth, slathered in that thick Kiwi accent, has the ability to make me laugh until I cry.

?he had a budgie, but it died.

HBO is really rocking my insular, antisocial couch-potato world right now. Between ?Flight of The Conchords?, seasons 1 and 2 of ?Dexter? and repeat viewing of all 6 seasons of ?Sex and The City?, it?s no wonder my tan is nonexistent and my couch has something like a permanent groove in one of the cushions. I don?t care, though. I have songs, serial killers and sex. I?m a happy girl.

Hot Fuzz

A buddy movie, a murder mystery, a comedy, a drama, a thriller and a gore flick all wrapped up into one spiffy little package - ?Hot Fuzz? is the film to see when you?re definitely not in the mood for a overly scripted coming of age romance.

?Fuzz? gives comic gurus Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright, the gents behind ?Spaced? and ?Shaun of the Dead?, a chance to perfect their skills in genre perversion. Just when you think you?ve got a beat on where the film is heading ?bam! (oooh? that was cheesy, sorry) - it goes in a completely different direction. After all, why make a typical fish-out-of-water cop movie when you could make a fish-out-of-water buddy cop action-comedy with visuals befitting of a gore flick? Screw convention, these guys can make anything work.

And work it does, my friends! Sure, the plot may be thin and the characters slightly clichéd, but who cares? It?s bloody funny and quotable to the point of distraction ? ?SWAN!"

Or maybe you just want to see how many film references you can spot? It?s fun, trust me.

Little Children

?Little Children? - the story of two people stuck in unsatisfying marriages who happen to find each other while on their simultaneous spirals into deep blockades of depression. Oh, and a pedophile who moves into their neighbourhood.

Probably needless to say, but this was one of the most emotionally draining things I have ever seen. It?s the type of film where you walk out of the theatre unsure of whether you should feel disgusted or moved or (maybe) even cheated in some small way.

I subsequently find it really, really difficult to critique this type of filmmaking because I just flat out do not like it. They make me feel hollow and miserable. How?s that for entertainment?

And sure, the performances are flawless and yes the story is well told, but really, do you want to spend two hours watching people in the midst of depression? Do you want to see how long it takes before they break? I don?t. Not again, anyway.

There?s drama and then there?s? this? whatever it is. A cold, hard dose of reality that I really wasn?t ready for, I think.

Smokin? Aces

Want to see things get blown up, blood splatter and the très sexy Jeremy Piven off his nut in an open robe? Then this is the film for you, discerning movie patron!

It?d probably be good if you?re not in the market for a coherent story, also.

I honestly wouldn?t have bothered with this film if Piven wasn?t a part of it. ?Entourage? has made me love that man. But, unfortunately, he isn?t on screen nearly long enough to make up for the rather disastrous plot or the terrible performances from the majority of the cast (Alicia Keys? Why?).

Not even Bateman could save it. Shame, that.
