Alex's Review of The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby(2013)
Luhrmann's 'Gatsby' begins by assaulting you with a blitzkrieg of garish tastelessness in which everything feels artificial, subtlety is but a memory, and unintentional laughs are abound; all without a hint of irony. Eventually, the movie quits its overeager attempts to dazzle you and mellows out into something actually resembling good drama. In fact, it becomes good drama. The performances, at first overblown, become nuanced before your very eyes. Rivalries heat up! Composures are shattered! And then, just when you think the movie has turned a complete 180, the thing just rolls over and dies.
On the bright side, it at least finds new and interesting ways to disappoint.
