Tom's Review of War (Rogue Assassin)
War (Rogue Assassin)(2007)
War is the story of an FBI agent (Jason Statham) who hunts down the killer of his partner. The killer is a Triad hitman called Rogue (Jet Li). The film delivered in action, but lacked in just about everything else. The fantastic martial arts and gun fights were pleasing to the male eye, but the simplistic story line and even simpler characters make for an overall disappointing film. Jet Li was as he mostly is, with few lines and many fights. Jason Statham probably should've had less lines, since I haven't really cared for Statham in any film since Snatch. The feeble attempt at a plot twist at the end intrigued me when I first saw it, however, the more I thought about it the less I liked it. It seemed unrealistic and just thrown in at the last minute. War should have just taken the route of films like Snakes on a Plane and not taken itself too seriously. Instead of being just a fun, mindless actioner, it was an actioner that thought it had a shot at being deep.
