The plot is very simple and the movie never attempts to break into the hollywood type conspiracies or reach too far and try to be epic. The movie is a day in the life of Judge Dredd as he is assigned to evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities. The assignment they choose is within a large building complex where the notoriously vicious Ma-Ma's (played by Lena Headey) base of drug operations are.

The movie never slows down and keeps the pace fluid, fast, and action packed. The few times the film slows down is to showcase beautifully shot violence and mesmerizing sequences in slow motion thanks to a drug in the film called Slo-Mo which causes the user to experience everything at 1% normal speed. This film does not hold back when showing violence as we see bullets flying through criminals faces in slow motion.

The movie never takes itself too seriously, with Dredd uttering some not so funny one liners before offing a couple of people, and questionably bad dialogue being uttered by nameless criminals throughout. But at the same time, the film reminds you of the consequence and toll it takes on the Judges with having to execute people on a day to day basis.

I also liked the choice they made in sticking to the source material and never showing Dredd's face. This makes Dredd into more than a human and rather a symbol. The human character we connect to is the Anderson character who after a certain point questions her choice to uphold the law.

The 3D as with any movie stands out in a couple of moments, particularly the gorgeous Slo-Mo scenes. However as always I could do without the glasses and 3D and it wouldn't really have hurt the film for me at all.

To me this is the perfect B movie. It's one of those movies with a simple plot that does everything right, and that you walked out with your expectations met or surpassed. I would definitely recommend this film to anyone who enjoys sci-fi, comic book, or action movies in general.
