This is no Deliverance. It's fun (in a bleak way) and there's some wonderful scenery and cinematography but the story is pretty one-note. As well, the ending was (spoiler alert) pretty much lifted from The Fighter. However, in the The Fighter the ending was completely satisfying. Here, I felt cheated.

My Week with Marilyn

Nice movie, good script, fun period piece and good performances. However, what I suspected going in (and what was confirmed by my viewing) was that there would be no way that any actress, Michelle Williams included, could recreate the absolutely one-of-a-kind God-given riveting persona of Marilyn Monroe. Williams did a great job with the ticks, mannerisms and vocal quirks of Monroe but that fell far short of making her the woman that was often described by those around her in the movie. The Monroe from My Week With Marilyn wouldn't have disrupted the love lives of every man who came in contact with her. The real Marilyn Monroe had that power because she was utterly unique as well as stunningly beautiful.

I saw this three times in the theater and bought the DVD the day it was released. It is one of my new "comfort movies". If I get in a mood where I question the worthiness of humanity to exist, I can throw on a comfort movie and say, 'Well, at least there's that.'

Midnight In Paris is entertaining from the get-go where we get a long patient montage of Paris across an entire day while enjoying some Sydney Bechet jazz. It has a great story, an endearing lead character with a charming amount of angst, eye-candy galore, and witty-to-hilarious dialogue. It is part period piece and part set piece and a big fat helping of fantasy. This is undoubtedly my favorite movie of 2011. (Full disclosure: I'm a writer.)

If not for the other planet, this would have been very interesting. The characters, family dynamics and setting were all engaging. But the other planet made this movie mostly silly and this is coming from a certified science fiction fan.

This was a lot of fun. Great period piece and a nice little slice of a moment of life in 1960 Puerto Rico. Some really good performances and more than a handful of outright and hardy laughs. One scene in particular had me in tears. If you don't want to shell out the ten bucks for the theater visit, check it out on DVD when it gets released. A good one for a group of friends who all have a sense of humor and maybe pass around a big fatty during the opening credits.
