I admire the attempt at something unexpected here, but too many genre cliches really devalue some interesting ideas and themes that really could have been compelling if not constrained to the horror gimmick.

Foxcatcher (2014)
3 years ago via Rotten Tomatoes

Foxcatcher puts on display fantastic acting talent from its three leading stars...talent most audiences didn't realize they were capable of. But in trying to reach emotional depths and explore the vast realm of identity, the film opted for very dry narrative over a savory inspirational piece, sacrificing much needed entertainment value in the process. With a lot of thought, patience and empathy, a viewer can walk away at least understanding the story if not enjoying it. However, if you find you're bored after the first 15 minutes and hoping it'll pick up, I have to warn you, it doesn't get much more interesting than that.

The Skeleton Twins
3 years ago via Rotten Tomatoes

It is so impressive to see these two comedy buffs put there all into roles that are some comedy but mostly depict dark and depressing themes. The result is a film that is charming and entertaining... among the best of independent film this year.

Whiplash (2014)
3 years ago via Rotten Tomatoes

This film was the highlight of my VIFF experience. Whiplash puts so much passion into the story it tells...from the above and beyond performances to the extremely tense storyline all the way to the abundantly satisfying conclusion. The cheers and standing ovation at the end of our sold out gala screening were very much deserved.

Housebound (2014)
3 years ago via Rotten Tomatoes

The blend of horror and comedy is perfect in Housebound, coming across as parody-ish while still delivering some decent thrills along the way and wrapping up in a satisfying manner in the end.
