Movie Ratings and Reviews

The Dark Knight

What can I say about this movie that hasn't already been said? Ledger may have given one of the greatest performances ever captured on film. Some may think that is crazy to say, but it is true. It was an out of body performance. Even if the rest of the movie was terrible, which it wasn't... but if it was Ledgers performance alone would have carried the movie.

Monsters University

Blah, hum.... ha.... oh um... shrug. Yep about what I expected. Worth a view but don't expect too much.

How much can one say about a movie called "Ant-Man". It was fun. I would watch it again on blu-ray

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation

Just knowing Cruise is doing all his own stunts and driving makes it a blast to watch. Fun action movie, worth a watch!

Mad Max: Fury Road

I'm not a gore for gore's sake kind of viewer, but being old school... Mad Max back in the day was one of the goriest movies out there. THIS Mad Max really doesn't have a drop of blood in it. A lot of "crash. boom, bam" but nothing really at stake. If you are expecting to see the old gritty, hardcore Mad Max where death, rape, and dismemberment are just around the corner... you are not going to find it here. If you want another homogenized 21st century type "action" film, it's worth a look.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

I could go on and on about all the things wrong with this movie, from mailed in performances by Ford and Fisher , to the main character learning the force in 15 seconds. But my biggest issue is the "villains". This is the least intimidating collection of villains since the 80's care bears cartoons. Seriously, we went from Grand Moff Tarkin, Darth Vader, and the Emperor... to Hux, Kylo Ren, and Snoke? It's an absolute joke. There were young kids sitting in front of me at the IMAX and when Kylo Ren took off his helmet, one of them said "that dork needs to put his helmet on". The entire "villain" cast just seem like whiny children lacking direction vs ruthless tyrants (or what ever their aim was)
So yes, the cinematography is really nice , the music is good... but the rest is just terrible. I understand for today's movie goers the shots and pop culture references (yes, Finn actually says "droid please" *gulp*) are far more important than strong characters and story line, but this was just awful.

Inside Out
Inside Out(2015)

Absolutely outstanding! It is far deeper than the drivel that has been in movie theaters for over a decade now. This move reminds us we don't have to let Anger, sadness, fear, or disgust run our lives. The metaphors were... dare I say... brilliant. It is a fantastic view in to the mind, and left me with a lot to think about.

The Guilt Trip

I knew this movie would end up getting a bad rating, not because it is bad, but because apparently America doesn't like anything without 20 or more fart jokes.
This is a good and kind movie. Streisand and Rogen are hilarious together. They play of of each other perfectly and their timing is great. My wife and I both found it to be smart and funny. If you are looking for low brow humor, pop culture references, or other typical American movie cliches, then look else where (I hear hangover 3 is coming out soon) If you want a funny, smart, warm movie then check out The Guilt Trip.

Man of Steel
Man of Steel(2013)

Not sure why people hated it, solid effort and I though Cavill did a great job. Worth a watch on DVD

Pacific Rim
Pacific Rim(2013)

The writing and acting is almost "power ranger" like, but some of the sickest robots I have ever seen... just wow. It you like the though of giant robots, you have to check this out.

The Princess and the Frog

Way better than I thought it would be. I'm not so in to Disney musicals, but it was pretty fresh even though it follows the old school formula. Worth a watch.

X-Men Origins - Wolverine

I'm very surprised at how many bad reviews this got. I thought it was a good movie that answered many of the questions I had. No accounting for taste I guess.

Very rarley do I like a movie from a book that I have read... this is the exception. Just as I pictured it in my head! A great watch!

One of my favorites of all times. I am a huge fan of all things cars and this one hit just the right spot for me.

The Green Mile

very cool movie. Must watch

Pretty solid movie overall, the plot is pretty cool. There are a few unexplained this in the end, but a neat concept. Worth a watch for sure, the drones are really cool.

Clash of the Titans

Ok, the story is no where as compelling as the original, but when I let myself go and tried to forget the original the movie wasn't all bad. If you haven't seen the first one you will enjoy it a lot more than if you did. Worth a rent.

This movie is... been there done that...a million times over. If I could use three words to describe it? Hype, hype, hype. I was not impressed but it would be worth watching...once.

EDIT!!! 01DEC10
Ok, so I went back and watched it on Blu-ray... it was much better. They made some slight edits they made the movie better. They made the Col. seem like a real A-hole, whereas in the theater he just seemed like he had a job to do and the Marine was a deserter. It was better the second time.

Cop Out
Cop Out(2010)

Ok, this movie was... really bad. But the Sean William Scott character was funny as hell.

Diary of the Dead

Just terrible! Bad acting, bad plot, predictable.... just plain bad.

Just ok. Had a lot of potential, but fell a bit short. Worth a rent.

Law Abiding Citizen

Wow, as of right now RT rates this movie at 25%, unreal!
This was a pretty cool movie, that kept my attention (more than I can say for most). The acting wasn't bad (again, more than I can say for most)and I thought it was a neat story that I haven't seen done quite in that manner. Worth a rent I say.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

They should have called it "Diary of a little a$$hole"
seriously, the lead kid is such a d-bag to everyone around him I was begging to see him get punched in the face. No sir, I didn't care for it.

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior

I watched this again the other day after not seeing it for about 15 years. It is still awesome! You have to wonder how the crew didn't get slaughtered doing some of the stunts.

The Brothers Grimm

I watched this again the other night. There is something almost grotesque about the spastic acting everyone seems to do. Pretty bad movie.

Youth in Revolt

Pretty funny most of the time, very funny in parts. Worth a rent.

The Road
The Road(2009)

Pretty decent Apocalypse movie. Worth a watch just don't over analyze or you could leave it with too many questions.

This movie had a ton of potential and blew it. This true story had so many ways it could have been explored but it just felt jumbled together with no real direction. Worth a watch I guess.

The Crazies
The Crazies(2010)

Just ok. I found nothing special here but if you like the genre worth a rent.

Mary and Max
Mary and Max(2009)

Pretty good movie, a little depressing and a little weird at times. Worth a rent.

Whip It
Whip It(2009)

Good acting, good writing, and interesting. A very good "coming of age" movie. A great rent.

Princess Mononoke

One of my very favorite movies. I don't use the term very often, but the movie really is epic!

Spirited Away

Very good movie, must watch.

My Neighbor Totoro

Love this movie. So much imagination and thought put in to it. Just plain fun!

The Last Airbender

Yes, the acting could have been better, but RT at this point has given it a 09% ??? That is ridiculous! I guess there wasn't enough boobs, cussing, and fart joke huh? I thought it was a fun movie to watch. The effects were very good. Worth a watch in theaters... and I rarely say that.

The Book of Eli

All in all a very entertaining movie for me. A must rent.

Toy Story 3
Toy Story 3(2010)

Again I'm in the minority on this one. I had read before I went that TS3 was the best in the series, and how it captured the feeling of the others completely, and how this movie would invoke tears, I would have to disagree on all accounts. The writing was nowhere as crisp as the first two, to me the voice acting seemed like the actors were bored, and the whole thing seemed rushed. It was entertaining in spots, and had some very funny moments but I surely wouldn't call it the best in the series. If I had to do it again I would wait until it came out on blu-ray.

I Am Legend
I Am Legend(2007)

Will Smith's acting is amazing!!! Story is good. the effects are atrocious. Worth a watch

This movie sucks plain and simple. Wait for an hour for anything to happen, and then... it doesn't. Lame!

No Country for Old Men

OK movie that never really lived up to what I thought it could be. Hated the ending.

The Happening

Again I don't agree with the masses... surprise, surprise.
I thought it was a good idea though I had it figured out, it was worth a watch which is more than I can say about most movies these days.

Maybe it is because I'm almost 40 and don't really care about what a couple of 17 year old kids are doing, maybe it is because of the other 400,000 kid must score a chick with alcohol or drugs movie, or maybe I'm tired of "boob, fart, gay, and penis" jokes... either way, this movie bored me to death and I can't remember laughing once even though I was in Iraq at the time and sure could have used a laugh.

Happy Gilmore

silly, campy, and hilarious. I laugh my head off from start to finish every time I watch it. VERY funny, one of my favorite "zone out and laugh" movies.

Funny People
Funny People(2009)

I don't think it was what a lot of people expected and therefore gets unfair ratings. It is not a bad movie, and has some really funny parts.

Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation

Good lord... one of the worst movies of all time and certainly right there among top in worst sequel ever category. looks like it was shot in someones garage with trash bags on the walls, acting is horrible, plot horrible, effects horrible. Just a really bad movie!

Starship Troopers

I love this movie, campy on purpose but has some great story point, and gore galore. It is shot in a really cool way. A good rent.

28 Days Later

One of the greatest horror movies ever made... ever!
Great idea, great casting, good acting, great make up and sets. Must watch if you like the genre.

Cast Away
Cast Away(2000)

Really neat idea, and of course hanks takes this hollow character to the highest possible level. A really cool survival story as well as a good look in to the human psyche. Worth a view for sure.

Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas

It took me a couple times to warm up to it having watched the animated version every year since 1974, but it gets funnier every time I watch it. The set design, and make up are fantastic. At first Jim seems over the top as the grinch, but when you let yourself in to the grinch's eccentric ways there is a great charm in it. Some of the line he delivers in this movie are as funny as they can be.

The Sixth Sense

Now this is what a plot twist is supposed to be. Good movie!

Stir Crazy
Stir Crazy(1980)

This is a great movie.... period!
I have watched this movie every couple of years or so since it was made and it never gets old. If you have not seen it immediately punch yourself in the face. Just classic!

Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys)

Love this movie. If you like Sci-Fi and have not seen it you are doing yourself a great injustice Great Movie!!!

The Tooth Fairy

Lame... yes, funny... yes. Worth a rent for some VERY cheap and predictable laughs. Anyone who takes the rock as the tooth fairy seriously has bigger problems than this movie.

Donnie Darko
Donnie Darko(2001)

You know, I had heard so many great things about this movie, but for me it fell flat in every way. The casting, and acting were poor at best, the movie lacked aim and direction, and was chalk full of plot holes. The movie is full of character and quotes that we are supposed to care about but are never given a reason to care. The movie continually takes you down dead end roads, which would be fine if the movie ever ended up anywhere, but it doesn't. I was very disappointed and actually felt like 2 hours had been stolen from me. Take a look if you want, but I don't recommend it.

Shutter Island

Not a bad movie. The music at the beginning is a little over climactic for the mood of the scenes and gives the feeling that the movie might take itself a little too serious, or perhaps they don't feel comfortable with the substance so they try to make up for it by using extra "scary" tones.
All in all a really neat idea that is well acted and well cast. Worth a look if you like the genre.

Crazy Heart
Crazy Heart(2009)

Ok this movie "almost" had me until the point when he goes to rehab. Now, this guy, by his own admission had been an alcoholic for 40 years. The rehab scene was less than 2 minutes after the movie dragging ass for an hour. He arrives at rehab, a guy says "we are glad you are here" and then he is being picked up by his friend all clean and sober... BS!!! No sweats, shakes, or withdrawals of any kind? So the key to this movie is the change he makes in his life, and yet we don't get to bare witness to the most important part? Again...BS!

The Blind Side

Good movie, great story. I grew up very poor in Sacramento, there were many stories in my neighborhood just like his including my own. Unfortunately none of us have a millionaire family to rescue us, but I couldn't be happier that somebody got that opportunity and made the most of it. Great rent for the whole family.

Again I don't agree with "everyone" else. I thought the animation was well done, and it some good ideas, but all in all boring and predictable. Sorry I just didn't like it that much.

The Iron Giant

Great movie, with very good writing. If you haven't seen it...what the hell is wrong with you? Rent it today!

Fantastic Mr. Fox

After reading the reviews I thought it would be much better. It was ok, but I wasn't overly impressed. Worth a rent if you are bored.

District 9
District 9(2009)

90? I don't think so. A decent movie, good idea, not fantastic on execution, and left me with loose ends. Worth a watch.

Tommy Boy
Tommy Boy(1995)

Love this movie, very very funny. If you haven't seen this movie...what the heck is wrong with you? A must rent!
Tommy like wingy!

Joe Dirt
Joe Dirt(2001)

Once again I don't agree with the bad reviews. Although a bit campy (on purpose) the humor is very quick at times. The story is very original, and the cast is great. Love this movie!

The Men Who Stare at Goats

What can i say...
interesting, occasionally funny, but mostly boring and somewhat pointless. Worth a view if you are curious.

Nacho Libre
Nacho Libre(2006)

Again, very surprised how low this movie is rated. This is a very funny, well cast, well written, and sweet nature movie. It is so rare these days for a movie to have a clean heart, and this one does through and through. I guess it would have been rated higher if it would have had cussing, raunchy humor, and breasts every where? I wish Hollywood would make more movies like this, good clean fun!

Neat idea. Bruce brings the same intensity he always does and it helps the movie over all. Not sure why I didn't care for it much, just predictable I guess. Worth a watch at home.

Surf's Up
Surf's Up(2007)

very very funny, well written, casted, and acted. Very fun, must rent.

It seems that any CGI film that doesn't completely suck, gets great reviews. I for one was not impressed. In my opinion not even close the the caliber of cars, nemo, surf's up, TS and so on.
Predictable and a bit boring, with some decent humor at times. Worth a rental fee.

Sherlock Holmes

I am a huge original Sherlock Holmes fan. This is not that.
A good entertaining film well worth the rental.

Slow moving and predictable at the beginning, it whisks you away at a break neck pace when it does get going. It is the same narrow misses over and over and over, but very entertaining to watch. Worth a rental fee.

Planet 51
Planet 51(2009)

Just dreadful! Tired jokes, inconsistency galore...again, just dreadful!

Where the Wild Things Are

In one word? Creepy! Not in a good way either. I grew up with the book. It was one of my favorites... this movie did no justice to it.

Slightly predictable, but funny and fresh. Well worth the rental fee.

A well thought out movie. Well made and very funny. A very relevant piece of social commentary.

As a huge car enthusiast, this movie gets me right where it counts. Super funny, well thought out, well written, and just plain old good fun!

Just brilliant! The writing, the acting, the plot all just superb! One of my favorite movies of all time.

The Wolfman
The Wolfman(2010)

Not to bad, a little campy but worth a rental fee

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

this is one of my very favorite movies of all time. It takes a special mind to appreciate all the little nuances for sure. You can watch this movie time after time and discover something new every time.
