The Great Gatsby
3 years ago via Rotten Tomatoes

While a very close and faithful adaption of the novel, The Great Gatsby seems unsure whether to be conventional or more unique in its take, and it is because of this indecision that I felt it never quite reached the levels of greatness it could have. It remains a very well done film adaption, but only a mediocre Lurhmann film.

½

Well, this is it. It seems like an impossibly long four years since 2008's "The Dark Knight", but its successor is now upon us. And succeed is exactly what it does. While I feel that "The Dark Knight Rises" is, predictably, unable to contend with its predecessor's level of cinematic excellence, I did enjoy Christopher Nolan's newest offering far beyond this year's other summer blockbusters. It is a film that is steeped in drama and the epic scenes we've come to expect from movies this large, but also pays heed to the finer elements of storytelling.

And, let's be honest, for all this talk of 'plot holes' that people keep find to be popping up throughout this, I can say that very, very few of them are actual plot holes. The vast majority of them are either already explained in the film, are blatantly obvious, or simply can't have been addressed in TDKR's already long runtime (even though I do foresee some 4 and a half hour director's cut somewhere on the horizon). In any case, I am looking forward to seeing this in IMAX later in its theatrical run.

P.S.: I don't care what any of y'all say, I liked the ending.

Moonrise Kingdom

A very cute film that is admirable in its sheer uniqueness, even though it may be a little too self-conscious at times.
