Prototypical Hong Kong magical horror film. Low on special effects, and not as outlandishly outrageous as later examples of the genre but definitely creates the template with spells and counter-spells (mostly love and death), and forays into grotesquery and purely provocative peculiarity.
A charming, if predictable, story which succeeds primarily on the deft, and often subtle, comic performances of the lead actors.
Good but not great comedy about an inoffensively self centered man who doesn't really seem to mind much the gradual downward spiral his life becomes once he strays from his stable family life.
Inconsistent but reasonably good. The protracted lead-in to the core of the film works surprisingly well as we get comfortable with the characters who will eventually be endangered. Primarily this movie deserves attention for bursting taboos regarding violence by and toward children in unsettling yet credible ways. I'd rather like to see a remake - a good remake of this could be chilling.
Interesting as an example of Yiddish cinema in the 30s. Reasonably entertaining, Several fine songs. it's not going to grab someone who's not a fan of cinema history, though.
