Public Enemies

Mann's emphasis on lavish sets and sharp costume design explains the bereft dialogue and often pointless continuum of events some are hailing as a great gangster film. Perhaps most inexplicable of all is Depp's unusually lacklustre performance. Perhaps he's remembering better scripts as he soldiers 'diligently' through this one?

A much older Harrison Ford tries to inject jaunty charm into his much loved role and partially succeeds. Shia LaBeouf brings the same inane-grinned 'itch you can't scratch' unease that saw Transformers glide along in its own sickly sweet manner. A post-CGI addition to the franchise sees Indy compete with poorly rendered monkeys and over-acted villains who swapped the swastika for the hammer and sickle but didn't learn less one-dimensional character attributes.

A noble attempt, albeit weakly plotted and showing its age, despite the CGI facelift.

Butler earnestly heads this belaboured and deliberate moral exploration. His job is made more difficult by a script heavily laden with the 'ghosts of aspiring psychological action films past', and a plot which begs the viewer to disengage their powers of reason to accept the many holes and inconsistencies within it. Adequately directed, reasonably acted, clumsily patched together action film with pretences of something more cerebral.
