The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I wish this movie was directed by Paul Verhoeven. It has all the titillating elements for him to make a very politically incorrect film. However, the story was in the hands of a director who gives the material a rather unpolished treatment, as if he didnt believe completely in it. The Hitchcockian final twist doensn't work, and I found the ending pretty much abrupt and unsatisfying. The movie works better as a character study, and the notion that in this cybernetic world we live in it is virtually impossible to keep a secret, is almost more terrifying than the work of the sexual predators at the core of its cinematic mystery.

Surrogates (2009)

I give 20% in recognition of the not so bad special effects and the technical proficiency of the director in some sequences, like the chase scene with a robotic Bruce Willis jumping on the roofs of the rebels' ghetto. But honestly, this must be one of the most derivative and suspense free sci-fi movies ever to be conceived, with cliche characters and a mystery so banal yet incongruous that is not worth solving. I would say this is, together with "Cabin Fever 2", one of the worst 2 movies I have seen this year.

The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos)

Campanella's film is a pulpy thriller with a heart. It is a "genre film" that has more in common with classical Hollywood and with italian "giallos" than with art house cinema. The eroticism and aesthetically arranged scene of the crime, which some perceived wrongly as "bad taste" is a clear blink to those who love italian "giallos" and the films of Brian DePalma. But Campanella was willing to dig much deeper, aiming at the very core of the mechanisms of memory and the human connections of the many characters. The results are spellbinding. An edge of your sit movie experience.
