Old sport, I saw the Great Gatsby movie. The overuse of the phrase "old sport" somewhere in the vicinity of 400- 500 times was kind of an analogy for the whole movie. Too much emphasis in some places. The attention to flash and over the top detail was not necessarily in service of the story at all times although it did help to establish the decadent excess of the roaring 20's and the untouchable richness of industry titans of the time (Vanderbilt etc?). DiCaprio's acting was a bit hammy and a more measured and inflective performance would have been more appropriate. Between DiCaprio not being really effective in the part (Macguire was fantastic though) and director Luhrmans over emphasis on eyecandy (3D Gatsby? Seriously?) the movie was a bit of a missed opportunity.
Still, the visuals were fun to look at and the end did punch home the core message of a man self destructed by his trust in love. I resist the urge to damn the movie for being over the top. It was fun and the core message of the book stayed. However, "fun" is below contemplative, tragic and haunting which is what this story of American romanticism of a time lost glory should have been. Had the potential to be great in different hands. Worth seeing old sport. 7/10
