As much as I love a good superhero flick, things like this are where Bettany TRULY shines. The complex intricacies and raw emotional power of his emotion is an absolute spectacle and the rest of the cast holds their own as well. It also pays attention to the smallest details, lending a subtle realism and authenticity to it. Absolutely will watch it again.
The 3D animation is positively breathtaking and captures the look and feel of Classic Lupin while driving it at full speed into the modern age of animation. The movie itself with its stylization, pacing, and at times delightfully aggressive silliness, along with Yuji Ohno's iconic music, feels like a loving tribute to and celebration of the beloved red jacket era, while the character of Laetitia brings in just enough of the Castle of Cagliostro vibe to give it a sense of class. If your watching in English, you'll have the further nostalgia of the old Pioneer/Geneon cast returning to the roles they seem meant to play, (with the exception of now retired Dan Lorge as Inspector Zenigata, now played by Doug Erholtz). If you're a Lupin fan you can't miss this one. If you're not, this may just win you over.
I went to my local theatre to see this film when it first released, expecting to be reasonably amused by a cute kids film with some good jokes. What i got instead was a trip back in time, to my childhood. From the first notes of John Powell's truely masterful score, as the opeing shot of a fantastical Viking village slowly pans forward, and Jay Baruchel quietly speaks the first lines of narration, I was drawn in and entranced by this cinematic experience. Its creative use of familar tropes and elements, combined with a few truly innovative ideas and fresh moments reflects a heart and purity the likes of which evoke memories of the simpler more innocent days of youth, while still remaining relevant to me as an adult. I have been coming bsck to it since it was new and even after almost a decade, it remains my favorite film of the last ten years, and possibly, of all time.
