So pleased with this movie; it was everything I wanted it to be. Essentially, this movie is to 'The Shining' what 'Exorcist III' is to 'The Exorcist'. It is a really strong continuation of the universe, offering something new and different, not simply relying on its predecessor as a crutch. Mike Flanagan takes such care in setting the board and drawing the battle lines, interweaving numerous different threads and performing the nigh on impossible balancing act of honouring both the Kubrick film and the King novel. The movie is beautiful and the recreation of the 'Overlook Hotel' is breath-taking. The Newton Brothers handle the score perfectly and the musical choices throughout are exactly what fans of the Kubrick film would hope for. Fantastic performances from Ewan McGregor, Cliff Curtis, Kyliegh Curran and Zahn McClarnon, but Rebecca Ferguson is undoubtedly the standout performer as Rose the Hat. Having seen the movie three times now, 'Doctor Sleep' could very well be my film of the year.
