Silence (2017)

Saw the film a couple weeks ago in L.A. The premise of two Portuguese padres searching for an apostatized missionary in Imperial Japan seems as if it would be intriguing. Instead, it becomes an exercise in sadism and patience. If you have difficulty empathizing with religious beliefs, you may not be able to relate much to Garfield's character and his internal struggle. One after another, his Japanese followers are ordered to step on a tile depicting Jesus. Most do not and are tortured and killed. This is 3/4 of the film's narrative. I can't imagine myself ever watching this film again unless I'm in the mood to torture myself.
