Interesting to watch, if not simply for its landmark status. It definately made good use of its budget.
Built for fans of the first three, unfortunately the makers couldn't go anywhere in this fourth instalment. That is to say, everything that could have been done with the franchise, already has been.
So it seems that the makers have tried to steer the film in an entirely different direction. Gone is the dark, gothic atmosphere, replaced by your standard dystopian future setting. Even the set pieces that made the first three films watchable, and at times enjoyable, are replaced by modern, concrete and neon buildings. The dialogue too is predictably stale and at times horribly cheesy, and the whole film is so poorly lit that you can't see what's going on.
Where's the sexiness of the vampires? Where's the badassery of the lycans? Where's the sexiness AND badassery of Selene? And you know the worst thing about it all?...
Looks like this franchise will be taking a nosedive in a few years.
It's Pacino who makes this one of the best character dramas of all time.
