Wow. I don't usually do this, but as a kind of epilogue to my review, I just want to say that I was rather shocked to see the nasty reaction that most critics have been having toward this film so far. The screening I attended had one critic who hated it while the rest had enjoyed it for the most part. The audience had nothing but nice things to say, and I heard more than one person say that it was the best film they had seen in a long time.....so to find the film being slammed continuously for the past 24 hours on RT is rather surprising.
What also bothers me is their "consensus" which states "The scenery and the stars are undeniably beautiful, but they can't make up for The Tourist's slow, muddled plot, or the lack of chemistry between Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. " The film was anything but slow. In fact, it was one of the breeziest films I've seen in the past couple of months. Muddled plot? A six-year-old could follow the simple plot. Lack of chemistry between Depp and Jolie? I found that they played rather well off of each other's character traits. So after dismissing all of that nonsense, it remains unclear where all the hate is coming from. This is a film that is simply meant to be a fun joy ride, and it succeeds at that very well.
