The plot is a little thin, but beautifully and realistically capturing a family is a high achievement.
A shockingly good movie. Intimate, quiet, compelling. The artistry, the allegories, the beauty and tragedy represent a glimmer of hope that great movies can still be made.
As other reviewers have noted this is a very visual, artistic sort of movie. Not much character development or plot, more like snippets of life. A "tone poem." Beautiful to look at, but ultimately not very engaging. Very art house.
It seems like they were trying to mimic the cultured zaniness of Wes Anderson, but it failed pretty badly. Kevin Kline was at his manic, scene stealing best. It is too bad he couldn't carry the whole picture...but he tries.
