Jake Young's Movie Ratings - Rotten Tomatoes

Movie Ratings and Reviews

Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
½

Disappointing, underwhelming, lacks sense and lacks the weight and care of the first. Sin City 2 is still visually strong, some nice new additions in story and characters and has its moments but ultimately is very disappointing due to the muddled story (eg. Marv is present in both the prequel and sequel stories despite them all making out they are happening at the same time, what with them all being in the saloon at the same time at one point.) Some reviews have said that 'The Dame To Kill For' story was the weakest, I felt it was the most well rounded, Levitts characters story is certainly interesting but lacks any action, and Nancy's story is interesting but lacks sense since Marv is helping her despite it being a story set after the first one, in which Marv dies.

Only God Forgives
½

Only God Forgives is certainly an extremely bold movie, as almost all of the story is told through performance, there is dialogue but don't go in expecting an ordinary film because this film is extraordinary. Everything from the beautiful visuals, powerful performances and tense storytelling this film was an utter joy to watch and it baffles me that it had bad reviews. Its either you love this film, or you hate it.

Captain Phillips
½

My problems with Captain Philips reside with the first half, the first problem is that you don't get to know the character at all which makes it hard to connect with him later on. Another thing is that Greengrass makes it seem as if Captain Phillips knew it was going to happen the whole time, making him perform security drills etc - just seemed odd. The movie really starts when the pirates are leaving the ship, the second half is tense, powerfully acted with very believable pirates I might add, with nerve racking scenes and an emotional ending makes Captain Phillips a good movie.

Drive
Drive(2011)

This movie is just powerful. Beautiful cinematography, stunning imagery, addictive soundtrack, incredibly acted and a fantastic script with a ton of depth. This is one of the best movies in recent years, and is a highly recommended watch.

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby gave me and I assume a lot of people high expectations, and for the most part it delivered. The visuals were dazzling and it was incredibly acted most notably Toby Maguire and Joel Edgerton but sadly its not all as incredible as we hoped, this movie fails horrifically on one front, sound. The sound in this movie for the most part just doesn't fit, at first I had thought it might work, but unfortunately it completely takes you out of the time and the film and just reminds you that you are watching a film, and its sad.

The Place Beyond The Pines
½

A fantastic script, looks fantastic and brilliantly acted the only thing that hurt this film for me is that at times it can go on just too long. Apart from that its a recommended watch.

Broken City
Broken City(2013)
½

Not too impressive.

Seven Psychopaths

A fresh movie that has a ton of fun, sly and clever dialogue packed with a bunch of laughs and then topped off with some emotion, Seven Psychopaths makes for a great movie.

Oblivion
Oblivion(2013)
½

Looks great visually, strongly acted and an excellent story, Oblivion plays out well and is really enjoyable.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Visually impressive, the chilling villainous performance from Cumberbatch equally impressive. While it is also suitably action packed, personally it felt as though I was being rushed through the experience but it didn't hurt the film too much for me and it was overall very pleasing.

Looper
Looper(2012)

Clever, detail orientated, thought provoking, thrilling and extremely well acted, specifically by the main role played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Looper ticks every box, a must see.

The Hangover Part II
½

Not as good or funny as the first, the idea is almost instantly dull. Although their are a few laughs here and their mainly from Mr.Chow and Zach Galifianakis.

The Bourne Ultimatum

Ultimatum is a non stop thrill ride that keeps you griped to the story, as you watch to see Bournes story unfold. The film has great energy while keeping the emotion of the film running - a great way to finish.

Jurassic Park

A modern classic. A great film for all ages - loved this growing up and still do - never gets boring.

The Karate Kid

Okay watch, makes the story its own take but still no way near the originals.

Taken 2
Taken 2(2012)

I love Neeson, but this was just TERRIBLE! The biggest mistake they made with this film was making it for the money, then because of this they made it a 12a to make it more approachable, so lots of 12 year olds who didn't have the satisfaction of going to see the first had a chance so they could make money and sell seats, and by doing this they rubbed a big pile of sh*t into Taken 1 fans' faces.

Marvel's The Avengers

A all time great superhero films, it doesn't quite compare to Nolan's Batman series but its in a different ballpark to it. The avengers combines not only some of our favorite Marvel heros' but combines massive action and humor to just make a pure enjoyable film.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Superb film, this is just pure action, adventure at its best. It makes the kid inside us all want to grab a whip and a fedora and go on an adventure. Has edge of your seat action and on the floor laughs - a perfect balance of the two makes this a great film and an amazing way to kick-start a trilogy.

Death Proof
Death Proof(2007)
½

Not a great film from Tarantino, but has its moments as each film he does has. Its a fun film just to watch for the action but lacks what we expect from a Tarantino - memorable dialogue and a gripping narrative although this is a great insight to horror films of the 70s and is enjoyable in some aspects.

The Bourne Identity

An excellently made thriller, that is worthy of the name. It literally will have you edge of your seat trying to anticipate what will happen. The mystery is amazing and keeps you guessing though out the film, and this mixes well with the big action sequences, it wraps up well but to fully understand Bournes story you will have to watch two and three.

The Untouchables
½

Classic gangster thriller, that has lots of artful touches - brilliantly put together and a great film - Costner is great and one of Connerys best.

Ocean's Eleven
½

A cool, stylish, witty, fast paced, entertaining film. That has a great concept that keeps you watching and defiantly something you should watch, as it teams an all star cast with the likes of Clooney, Pitt, Damon, Garcia and other familiar faces.

Heat
Heat(1995)

Greatly put together by Mann, an awesome film in general and wonderful performances from Pacino and DeNiro.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

A visually and story satisfying return to Middle-earth. Lacks some of the great features from the LOTR but a good film in its own right, look forward to the sequels more than anything as I believe that's when they will really pick up and get into the what we all know and love.

500 Days of Summer
½

A clever, refreshing and fun romance comedy that stands out above the rest and its clear why.

The Beaver
The Beaver(2011)

I found this film really enjoyable despite the serious nature of it, Gibson really sells the part in this film and makes me empathize with him immediately, don't be put off by what you think the film may be about because 9 times out of 10 you'll be wrong.

Kick-Ass(2010)

Entertainment with some laughs, this film is rammed with dark humor and over-the-top violence.

Aliens
Aliens(1986)
½

While Alien is more of a slow building, atmospheric tension film, Aliens is much more hard hitting, and jam packed with action while keeping the horror and suspense of the first film, this is one of the best sequels to a modern classic ever.

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind

An intriguing and challenging film, that has a great element of Mystery and drama surrounding it with strong characters and memorable moments, greatly entertaining and will guarantee a second watch.

The Departed
The Departed(2006)

The Departed is a compelling, engrossing gangster film. It delivers on all fronts -a realistic gritty look, narrative and excellent performances from all the cast. It really brings you into this world, a must see.

The Hangover Part III

This film moves away from the plots of the previous two, and makes a refreshing change, but its hardly a comedy.

Mad Max
Mad Max(1979)

The film starts off slow, building characters and showing you Max as a person but this is worth sitting through because it pays off at the end, it picks up into a visceral, violent and heart wrenching finale as you see Max's life taken from him and forces him to adapt to a new threat, you will walk away from this movie pleased and eager for more.

Iron Man 3
Iron Man 3(2013)

Once again the performance of Robert Downey Jr fills it with charisma, the action is what you'd expect but the films seems to think its being clever when it makes its self blindingly obvious in the process and then for a film called Iron Man, we dont see much of Tony Stark as Iron Man.

Pretty Woman
Pretty Woman(1990)

A classic, sweet, passionate, enjoyable romance-comedy.

The Running Man

Just what you'd expect from an 'Arnie' film.

Super 8
Super 8(2011)

Super 8 has charm and impressive visuals, topped off with an thrilling emotional story that is entertaining.

Trading Places
½

Trading Places is funny, energetic, clever and fun to watch but what most sticks out apart from the humor is the chemistry between Aykroyd and Murphy, this film is an all round laugh.

Four Lions
Four Lions(2010)
½

This film can sound very racist and tasteless, but in fact it's very smart and has a lot of dark humor. It's insanely funny and worth a watch.

A Bug's Life
A Bug's Life(1998)
½

When I look back at the fond memories of watching Bug's Life, I get an overwhelming-warm feeling of nostalgia. It's got great and funny dialogue and a lot of memorable characters, for me it's up there with Toy Story.

Magnolia
Magnolia(1999)

Intriguing, powerful, moving and excellent. P.T Anderson does it again, Magnolia is a series of brilliantly told, interesting stories brought to life through the amazing performances from the entire cast. The film is played out so well, that the length is unnoticed, you are fixed to the screen as these characters are genuinely interesting and relate-able. Magnolia is a quirky, intriguing, excellent piece of story telling, that leaves it open for each person to have there own interpretation and what morals they take from it. This is a film that demands to be watched again.

Oz the Great and Powerful
½

Oz the Great and Powerful dazzles in visuals and wonder. It's a magical story with lots of amusement and manages to capture some of what the original was and I was able to get some nostalgic feeling from it but it doesn't quite compare to the original, although it holds its own as an entertaining movie.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

A great sequel, coming from the first. A good way to bring us back in to the Sherlock Holmes world - this addition has much more action and thrills and keeps suspense through out - some of the techniques seem repetitive.

Sherlock Holmes
½

Downey Jr. really makes this role his own, and makes an entertaining movie that a lot of people will enjoy, by using clever techniques behind camera to bring the character to life. Brilliant performances from Downey Jr., Strong and Law - great casting.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
½

This is a film that is expertly crafted by directer Andrew Dominik, he immerses us into the period with all its gritty, harsh beauty of the real west. With the strength of the cast, mainly it's two leads; Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck. We get an insight into the graceful yet ugly life of the west. This film can play out longer than others but if you are genially interested in the real life of these outlaws then it's no problem. Do not miss the legendary tale of the assassination of Jesse James.

Shame
Shame(2011)
½

Shame is a strong journey into the world of addiction affliction, backed up with powerful performances from Fassbender and Mulligan but its biggest failure is the fact it doesn't go deep enough, I felt like not much happened in it and there could have been a lot more drama.

A great and mature film, delivering a story that keeps you guessing all the way through and has unexpected twists and shocking outcomes. Glad that Tarantino gives Jackson a lead role once again, and its never disappointing, the film is set aside from the crazy action and irony of some of his other films but it was for the best as this film brings you realism and true life and one of Tarantino's most mature films.

Skyfall
Skyfall(2012)

A great addition to the Bonds, as Daniel Craig returns as the loved Bond, James Bond. It is exciting and emotionally connecting to the audience as you watch our hero plumit into near death and rise back out of it, we see Bond at the best we've seem him for years, with all his dangerous sophistication and of course the return of the Aston Martin DB5 - It just wouldn't be a great Bond without it. A notable return of the Quartermaster (Q) with a good performance - now we just need some more crazy gadgets to return.

A superb narrative that has you gripped intensely to the screen at all time, another great performance by DiCaprio and surprisingly a great addition from Mark Ruffalo. It has you puzzled and understood all at the same time - then at the end it all explodes in your face and leaves you jaw dropped.

A good film, sticks very well to the real story and has you trying to work out what will happen if you didn't already know about this true historical event. A great performance from Cruise and supporting cast - a great watch and if you enjoy WW2 films this is a must see.

Inglourious Basterds

This film is great, a good plot and immense performances all round. A fun but intense movie as you watch the plots unfold, and leaves you satisfied in the end, one of my favorites from Tarantino, and bless him for finding the gem that is Christoph Waltz.

Sin City
Sin City(2005)

I love this film, it's bringing a gruesome comic to life before your very eyes and stays true to the comic story while adding in its own. I love the style Rodriguez chose to shoot it in (Black and white - added color here and there) it really makes the film stand out. I can and have watched this over and over and over and over again!

Kill Bill: Volume 2

An exceptional sequel to the first film and keeps true to what we loved, and once again we follow Beatrix (The Bride) on her hunt for the people who tried to kill her and it does deliver to our expectations, and we finally meet the infamous 'Bill' who is brilliantly played by David Carradine - Tarantino sure knows how to pick em'.

Kill Bill: Volume 1

A movie that is a great action revenge film, spraying blood everywhere and thats what I love about this film - Tarantino wasn't afraid to use the crazy conventions of old Kung-Fu films and its just fun but also having a good narrative to push the story forward and making a bloody crazy ride.

The Usual Suspects

An amazing crime film, up their with the other greats. Really has you watching and makes you feel like your on top of whats happening and then right when you think you've got everything wrapped up - BANG, hits you with a huge plot twist and leaves you jaw-dropped.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1

Very good start to the beginning of the end :)

Massively under-rated, a good watch in general.

The Other Guys

Very funny, but after a few times - jokes get boring.

Very good film, thought it played well off the original tv series and made it, its own. Shame that we didn't have Mr.T but the fill in wasn't to bad.
