Hanks must be wanting to try out some less commercial projects as he gets older. He's very good as expected, and as a fan of westerns this one is an original story in an interesting setting following the collapse of the Confederacy. But to me it had a weak final punch.
This movie is really 2 separate stories. The far better one is the one you see in the previews of of a group of kids in the 80's shooting a horror film on a Super 8. It's as if Spielberg moved from the producer's chair to the director's. ...The other is your typical summer big budget sci-fi. Funny that the story without the special effects is the one with all the thrills. Unfortunately, that one is forced to take a back seat as the movie pushes forward and eventually all but fades from view. Guess it wasn't Spielberg directing after all.
