I just watched it today, 4/2/2016, and went in being apprehensive because of all the bad publicity. WOW was I pleasantly surprised how good it was!
This film is an outstanding example of the perceived glories of war suddenly slapped with the reality of horror. This should be shown in classrooms throughout the world. Truly an education for every generation.
While no "historical" film is completely accurate, Ridley Scott's 1492: Conquest of Paradise might be the closest to the realism that Columbus endured. It is brutal and daring with power struggles between those with vision and those with ambition. Gérard Depardieu gives a fantastic performance as Columbus and even looks very much like the explorer. For myself this is a beautifully visual movie that bring out a sense of justification for everyone who has an idea or dream that, if given the chance, could prove to change the world or at least improve it. For anyone who has been told "No, you can't" or "No, you should not", this movie will strike that cord.
One of my top 10 movies of all time.
Stands as one of the best sci-fi films of all time. Yet it sends an important message about humanity. This should be shown in class rooms around the world.
A race against time, a sacrifice to save the world. This gem shows Walter Matthau in a hawkish stance as a pentagon analyst. Henry Fonda stoic performance as the President and Larry Hagman before JR. Brilliant performances all around, especially Sorrell Booke as the congressman who represents the audience's view.
While the mechanics of this production are obsolete, the acting, storyline and logic of this production is classic! Eric Braeden is smooth as Dr Forbin. Gordon Pinsent and William Schallert round out an all star sci-fi cast. Many of them you will recognize. The question is this: Is freedom an illusion and would we be better off with a benevolent dictatorship who rules the globe and promises peace?
The most influential movie of my life before Star Wars. Watching it in the theater at 9 years old made a great impact on my life to love movies. I just watched it tonight for the first time in 20 years and was amazed how America has changed for the worst in 35 years. Bring back the innocence and characters of 70's who had much thicker skins than the politically correct of today.
