The Wind in the Willows (1996)
Yes, there are Pythons here but the whole affair is a flop. The production values are high enough (it's Disney, after all) but the cloying cuteness is a poor fit with the Monty Python troupe. The sound is also a problem: bangs, clangs and clatters were FAR too amplified above everything else (and no, it's not my TV).

Mix-up (1986)
The "quirky" touches of the filmmaker are shoe-horned into a very serious story in a clumsy, inept way. It's a shame that such a fascinating subject was given such shabby, inappropriate treatment. This "documentary" almost says more about the incompetence and vanity of the director than it does about its supposed subjects.

Dark Horse (2011)
I always brace for a sucker punch from Solondz, but he always gets me anyway. He refuses to compromise his vision, or to soften the blow. This is one of is best.

The Long Night (1947)
A promising build up collapses into a flaccid, overwrought ending. I wonder if someone in the front office pasted those pretentious paragraphs into Bel Geddes' mouth, to give the picture a more "uplifting" finish.
