The problem was the slow beginning of the film, which forced the viewer to get interested on the love life of the main characters, while the big plot unraveled a bit too slowly. Ideally, the buildup would've walked more hand in hand with the characters, now it felt too slow. But the moments that really served the big story behind, the fascism landing among high-class Jew family in Italy, were really touching.
This must have been one of the most important films when it came out, and there's so much we have to thank for this film. But. Either it hasn't stood the test of time that well, or it has been re-made obsolete starting from Star Trek and 2001, but it didn't feel fresh or innovative.
As real and as good as 80's teen comedy can get. Colorful, layered, a bit racist but in a "i-didn't-mean-it-to-be-racist-it-was-80s-and-we-didn't-know-it-then" (and I believe John there!), well written and fun as hell.
