Rabih's Review of GoodFellas
I initially watched GoodFellas shortly after it came out in the early nineties. I couldn't have been more than 10 years old, and as such had the impression of "cool!", but nothing more. I recently purchased the blu ray and was really excited to watch it again, this time from a much more mature point of view.
Being a Scorsese film, and a masterpiece at that, the direction is a wonder. Typical Scorsese: Class, rawness and complex story delivered so simply it amazes me. That's in my opinion what makes Scorsese a master director and one of the best of all time.
Acting is superb the entire way around: The top three though are the show stealers. DeNiro is spectacular, as always. He is not front and center like he is in other Scorsese masterpieces of the past, but definitely when he is in frame it's De Niro for the win!
Joe Pesci is at his best in this movie (along with Casino and My Uncle Vinnie in my opinion). He is so believably bad ass as a gangster, I have trouble seeing him doing anything else. His line: "Am I a clown for your entertainment bit" is classic.
Ray Liotta is not my favorite actor usually, but I can't deny he kills his role here. He is very believable and a great anti-hero. You sympathize and are disgusted by him all at the same time. He is a cheap gangster, but a real human simultaneously.
The music is great, the writing is nothing short of brilliant, and the story is just so good that there is very little not to like in GoodFellas. It makes it even more amazing to learn that this is a true story and these events actually happened in more or less the same manner!
In a nutshell, if you haven't seen this movie yet, do yourself a favor and watch it. It's a little long (2.5 hours), but you'll barely feel it, plus it's worth the investment!
