Rabih's Review of Despicable Me 2
Despicable Me 2(2013)
A sequel is naturally more challenging to make than an original film. It must not only stand on it's own ground, but also at least match the success of it's older sibling. "Despicable Me" was great! I loved that film. It had everything you could ask for in an animated film; it was funny, had lovable characters and was graphically excellent! It was almost 'pixaresque'! (almost)
So when Despicable Me 2 was announced, I was somewhat skeptical... Sequels in the animated world do not have a very good track record. They are usually boring weaker copies of the first rather than treading any new ground. So what would the writers and the team at Illumination Entertainment dish out?
Success in short. Despicable Me, while not as "original" as the original, is a solid film in it's own right. It got right what many animated sequels do wrong.
1 - It had a completely new story based on the first, not a copy.
2 - The characters have matured and changed between the first and second films.
3 - It asks new questions, not the same ones again with a "twist". It's a unique independent film that can be evaluated on it's own.
The rest of the film is spectacular. Sound is excellent throughout. The animation is sublime (as was the first). The 3D effect is just as good as the first (which was pretty good as well). Voice acting is spectacular, from an A-list group of actors, I would expect nothing less.
The new villain is excellent, with a hilarious backstory. The song number at the end was one of the funniest things I've seen in a while and I teared up it was so funny. There are some lame jokes and moments, but they are few and far in between.
If you liked the first, there is little doubt you will like Despicable Me 2! Good for kids and adults alike.
