Movie Ratings and Reviews

The Bay
The Bay(2012)

passed this up at the redbox and decided to give it a shot when i saw that there was so many good reviews on here and thought it was going to be based on real events.

'twas disappointing and definitely not the intelligent thriller a lot of reviewers are saying that it was. maybe a step up from a cabin in the woods sort of horror flick but, aside from a few startling scenes, it was just over-all gruesome, hard to get into, and unimpressive.

not a huge fan of denzel but, i am intrigued.

Escape From Planet Earth

it was amusing enough for my kid. but only because it was about space and had some silly moments in it. the story was not at all compelling or memorable.

Robot & Frank

i really enjoyed this. :)

i want my two hours back...

Star Trek
Star Trek(2009)

not a huge star trek fan, but you know, this was good.

Despicable Me 2

gotta' admit: the minions are the best part of these movies.

Upstream Color

loved this. beautifully captured. a well crafted story i can't stop thinking about.

i like paul rudd :)

wasn't bad, but pretty forgettable. the slugs had the best parts.

didn't expect to like this as much as i did! definitely one of my favorite tim burton movies. so beautifully done. the characters were funny, likable, and all around wonderful. the story-- magical, heartfelt, and exciting.

very good. so suspenseful, i wanted to throw up.

this movie literally moved me to tears. great picture of such a monumental time in history. daniel day-lewis is magic.

Children of Heaven (Bacheha-Ye aseman)

this movie gave my heart a good squeeze. loved, loved it. <3

Life of Pi
Life of Pi(2012)

read the book, then see the movie.

Into Thin Air: Death on Everest

i thought it started off kind of awful. the acting was pretty terrible but, some how, and i don't know if it was the hour of the night that i watched it but, it seemed to get better as the movie went on. i read the book and am usually pretty critical of books turned into movies but, i was impressed with how true to the book that it was. think the movie did a pretty good job of capturing this frustrating and heart wrenching account of the everest tragedy according to krakauer.

Wreck-it Ralph

i loved the concept and john c. reilly as ralph. i found it totally amusing but, there was *something* about it that i can't quite put my finger on, that just didn't do it for me the way "up" or "toy story" did. didn't finish it thinking, "now that's one i'd buy." also thought that it may have been a better one for a kid just a touch older than my four-year-old. there were a few intense and disturbing scenes that i found myself wishing my son wasn't watching. :i

Trouble with the Curve

eh, don't bother. you've probably already seen this movie, like, five other times. clint eastwood was the best part. but, even his typically endearing grouchiness couldn't save this movie from itself.

beautiful storytelling. magical, whimsical, sad, but hopeful.

The Giant Mechanical Man

meh. i was excited when i saw that jenna fischer was in this. i haven't seen her in anything but the office, however, i think her awkwardness is as endearing and "natural" as it is going to be in "the office." not so much in this. found myself rolling my eyes more than once. the acting could have been better. the screenplay could have been better.

Away We Go
Away We Go(2009)

wasn't expecting a lot from this but i was really pleasantly surprised. laughed quite a bit and even felt that a lot of it hit close to home. definitely worth a watch. and all the alexi murdoch. so good.

Sleepwalk With Me

it had its moments but "matt" annoyed me pretty much the whole time.

Dark Shadows
Dark Shadows(2012)

think it started off really well. it was quirky, dark, and i really liked what they were doing with the characters. wasn't so amused with the last half of the film. i had a really hard time finishing it!

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

i don't understand how this got nominated for best picture. i give it 2.5 stars for having us on our toes even though my husband and i did end up calling it pretty early on. left me with some questions and issues that maybe would have been answered and resolved had i read the book.

Moonrise Kingdom

this movie made me so happy.

Friends With Kids

it was going all right until the ending. then it just sort of fell apart.

i wasn't expecting much from this movie and was pleasantly surprised. the story was actually well told, explaining just enough to make sense but not too much; i was still left with a satisfying bit of wonder. acting wasn't top notch or anything but it was good enough to move the story forward and create an enjoyable movie.

Jeff Who Lives at Home

just what i was hoping that it would be. ...actually, better.

Killer Elite
Killer Elite(2011)

*sigh* ...what was i expecting, though?

Garden State
Garden State(2004)

music was great, natalie portman was adorable, peter sarsgaard was intriguing, and zach braff was even enjoyable up until the last half hour. his expressions, the way he spoke and acted...and his character, just annoyed me. glad i finally got around to watching this, though, it was better than i expected it was going to be.

My Week with Marilyn

really enjoyed this. a fascinating look at marilyn monroe. great storytelling that held my interest from start to finish. the acting was fantastic. and not just from michelle williams. kenneth branagh and judi dench were wonderful. and, of course, michelle williams was absolutely magical to watch.

Snow White and the Huntsman

while i had a hard time getting over the fact that kristen stewart was playing snow white, i thought that charlize theron did an awesome job at playing this beautiful, evil, tortured character. and the effects! very, very cool stuff. freaky stuff. don't let your young children (or any young children under your care) watch the mother who sat next to us in the theater, and brought her 5 and 7 year old kids.

We Bought a Zoo

while i appreciate that this movie was based on a true story and i totally want to go to the zoo it is based on, i had a hard time getting into it. the music in this movie was a little too epic for the movie itself. actually, this movie was a little too epic for itself. i found the sudden and random extreme close ups of animals paired with intense sigur ros pieces actually caught me off guard and made me laugh. probably not what they were going for. also, we watched this with our son thinking it would be a good family movie but it was definitely not geared towards young kids. we often can't pull him away from the screen but we couldn't get him to stay down to watch this. so, i wouldn't recommend this if you plan on watching with a young child. my favorite part of the movie: the little girl (maggie elizabeth jones).

while a character like hesher would have normally irritated me beyond measure, i liked this movie. i wish there would have been more backstory provided for him but i understand why they maybe didn't do that. the profanity was through the roof and off-putting but i did make the allowance that that just went with hesher's character. the message was good, the acting was good, and, when it was over, i was glad that i had given it a shot.

The Vow
The Vow(2012)

i just couldn't get into it.

Dr Seuss' The Lorax

while i am not usually a fan of movies in 3-D, i really enjoyed the 3-D version of this. i thought the animation was simple, yet beautiful and whimsical and the characters-- adorable and lovable.

Jack and Jill

as stupid as this movie looked, i felt hopeful about it because adam sander was in it. sadly, save for a couple generous laughs (because of adam sandler), this movie was not very good. katie holmes was terrible. if you must give this a shot, i recommend getting something done while you're watching. i folded two loads of laundry. wasn't a complete waste of time.

Puss in Boots

what a sweet little adventure! i am so glad that i decided to watch this with my son. it was more adorable, funny, and enjoyable than i thought it was going to be.

beautifully captured.

The Guard
The Guard(2011)

i may have just been too tired to give it a chance but i just couldn't finish it.

The Debt
The Debt(2011)

this movie had so much potential but really fell short. wish they would have worked on the character development more. it was hard to feel a connection or true understanding of any of the characters. the whole thing evoked a big huge feeling of, "meh." so, if you want to watch a mediocre spy movie with some mediocre spies, it's a $1 rental at the big red vending machine outside your drugstore.

Larry Crowne
Larry Crowne(2011)

tom hanks immediately gets any movie three stars in my book.

Batman: The Movie

my son adores this movie.

Midnight in Paris

i really should know better by now. i am never completely satisfied with woody allen films.

Super 8
Super 8(2011)

went to see this expecting to be disappointed and i was very pleasantly surprised.

this movie made me both laugh and ugly cry. it really takes a lot.

How Do You Know

reese witherspoon was adorable in this but i think that it was slow and druuuug out big time. and even though i usually like paul rudd, i had a hard time feeling his character in this movie.

this is the best movie in the world.

Hot Shots!
Hot Shots!(1991)

my husband loves this movie.

three stars for being so beautifully shot and engrossing. minus a star for being WAY too damn sad.

The Box
The Box(2009)

idea was great but poorly executed. think that anyone would have been a better pick than cameron diaz for this role.
