Certainly no your typical Film Noir.
This is more a character study in "why murder?" The femme fatale is not actually revealed until the film is half over -- and only briefly interacts with the film's anti-hero. The score (somewhat unusual in a Film Noir) is primarily thoughtful guitar music. Many of the actors & crew were well known for other movie & TV projects, yet this film has been somewhat overlooked. Shot in 7 days, this film is well worth watching for the effectiveness of basic film making.
While the film rightly shreds renewable energy sources (especially biomass), it's sadness at a lack of solutions is misplaced. Yes environmental groups are in bed with big corporate interest groups - we've known that for years.
What's not in the film is that Obama's Clean Power Plan was written in part by NG lobbyists (affiliated with NRDC!). At best it would have dropped CO² emissions to ~240 ppm - which would mostly eliminate coal but not NG.
Planet of the Humans does not address a way forward towards a clean energy utopia, but that's because the director & producers refuse to take a deep look at clean energy solutions themselves. For that it would be good to look at the 2013 film Pandora's Promise by one of Mr. Moore's mentors, Robert Stone.
This film is more of a hit piece - some might call sloppy - on corporate behind-the-scenes advocacy on behalf of renewables. For the record, I've been aware of much of this situation for nearly a decade. One can look at Germany, California, & South Australia to see lots of cheap renewable energy which raises retail prices (because of intense grid modification & NG peaker plant usage) while grid stability must be balanced by neighboring utilities - generally with high fossil-fuel usage.
There is a way forward towards a clean energy utopia: abundant energy for the planet.... perhaps check out EcoModernism as an enviro-philosophy instead of Moore & Co's dismal and dreary outlook.
Adequate outing with a welcome return of Rodan. A nice touch that the underlying story was about Japan trying to protect the rightful heir of another Asian nation.
A gem of it's time, which could easily be remade today.
Society-savvy gal manages to become a war widow & mother, but without the guiding influence of her farm-raised hubby she soon goes astray - and pays personal penalties.
Yes there are things more evil that Nazis, but hiding within them is genius. This film should really be remade - it might just sweep the awards.
An odd war film, which should probably be watched a second time (months later) to fully appreciate it. When is enough, enough - or too much? This film set during WWI but was made during the Vietnam conflict, I didn't think PTSD/shell-shock was recognized at that time as much as this film intimates. How do we define justice whether in civilian or military venues?
While not a masterpiece, this Super Comic Riot is fun anticipating how many ways the 4th wall crumbles. Then there's Morena - it's all about Morena and her bouncy/flouncy tatoos.
Though the "baddest guy on the block" was a welcome surprise... be careful what you wish for.
This chapter dovetails well into the others - well more like fills in void without having to rewrite much of the established SW universe. Which makes this superior to some of the Star Trek films. -can't believe I just wrote that.
While this entry in MCU has been building up for awhile (and does tie a few loose ends), it unravels nearly everything in the final third of the film - which is the whole point of Infinity War. Bouncing between several storylines this film does OK keeping a relevant thread between them, but this could have been a much more effective tale if it had been expanded and split into two films - which could have been released 4 months apart.
As it is this feels like a Reader's Digest version of Thanos' tale - with a sequel yet to bring a Marvel-ous postlude to his personal war.
Several great moments pepper this comedy which was the first time Jim worked with Doris.
An interesting concept to have an adventure featuring WWII evacuated children on joining up with a correspondence-course witch against Nazi's. A period piece which only Uncle Walt could pull off.
A rather strange premise about exploring alternate moralities between cultures. Good cinematography, editing, acting, set decorations, costumes (va-voom), but yet this film will make those with traditional moralities feel uncomfortable - in spite of the Hollywood ending.
Sweet & funny tale of making a bad business work again, when even the things in your favor are net negatives. If this were to be remade, I would change the ending to having the silent film bit be successfully commercialized.
Another cheap-yet-nearly-thrilling Hammer production. Worth it to get a glimpse of free swinging bosoms in early disco-era London & the squaring off of Cushing & Lee. This script could be adapted to an 8 part mini-series, if done right.
The weakest point of this film is the relationships of the main trio. Why they are best friends (two of them brothers) instead of being merely acquainted within their fraternal group... I don't know. The Zeppelin sequence is a high-point of he film (thrilling & shocking), but not the only high-point.
What does work in this film are the action sequences, many of them live. Then there's the two-tone color sequence with bra-less Harlow being very obvious for the camera. The ending redeems the film as the single person with strong morals opts to be the hero - regardless of the cost to others.
Gritty & very human response to being caught in the thick of war, surviving day by day as few of those fresh, young faces you meet each week survive into the next week. The emotional turmoil depicted here is just as great as in Apocalypse Now or Hamburger Hill.
Though this is an anti-war film from 1933, and these costs of war were fresh in the minds of many WWI veterans; the second world war would soon become inevitable a mere 5 years later.
Heartbreaking tale of finding your true self, and life's goals, through adversity in far away lands.
Milquetoast teen tale of summer romance - and nearly loosing yourself in the dream. Watch for several faces that would become well known over the next 40 years, except for star Sandra Dee who fell in love a year later and married singer Bobby Darrin. They divorced after 8 years & one child, she succumbed to alcohol and never married again.
Victor Buono - what a tragedy he didn't live another decade or two!! And Ellen Corby is such a delight in all her roles.
Yes this is a quickie production which was churned out in only a few months, but somehow the many aspects of the film came together under fine direction to make this psychological study well worth watching. Granted some of the characterizations are a bit "textbook psychosis", but that was perhaps a level that audiences best able to relate to the subject matter at the time.
Strange film which, though properly promoted as a horror/mystery film, could just have easily been developed into a whodunit/racial tension type of film. Thankfully the casting of Dolenz didn't transform this into a musical - and that's in spite of the fact that I've been a Monkees fan since the age of three!
I have the impression that this film, in spite of a strong concept, was developed with cheap writing, cheap production, & a quick turnaround into theaters - probably drive-ins. The actors seem fine, but using stage/film school actors while using very few takes or rehearsals didn't work so well in this film. I will say that the plot twist near the end (veteran with a touch of PTSD) was a sliver of genius.
