This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life. Almost every thing about this movie is wrong. It has a funny comedian like Eddie Griffin as the lead, has a fun and goofy premise and manages to squander both. This movie as a whole fails to deliver a single laugh, a cardinal and unforgettable sin for a comedy. This movie strangely feels like more of a drama, but the protagonist and premise are just goofy enough you can't take it seriously. I suspect that this movie was written as a comedy, but the studio decided to rework it as a drama. Interestingly I can see the same failings with this movie that plagued the I'll fated "cavemen" TV show (the tv show based on geikos cavemen commercials. Both pieces of media had a premise based on ethnic stereotypes but were too scared to learn into that edgey and risque type of humor for fear of offending people and becoming controversial. As a result we were left with a boring uninteresting stupor that wastes the audiences time. Do yourself a favor and skip this movie. If your looking for a funny black culture meets white culture, "culture shock" movie try "how high" instead
This movie was absolutely fantastic. Somehow this movie succeeded at being the best video game movie ever made, with out really being based on any video game. This is the movie gamers and nerds have been waiting for since Super Mario Bros. from the early 90's came out. It gets nerd culture and was made with the fans in mind. While people like my parents might not necessarily "get it" there are enough references to non game related pop culture and a story that follows a traditional narrative story that older viewers wont be left shaking their heads with nothing to enjoy. The shear amount of easter eggs, a concept previously foriegn to most non nerd non gamers is explained beautifully in this film. As for the easter eggs themselves, i found myself jumping for joy every 10 seconds with the characters and references I kept seeing and spotting. The relatively unknown cast does a great job, and I hope this film is the one that jump starts them to super stardom. This film is also a great introduction to the genre that is cyberspace with elements such as evil megacorperations that can commit any kind of unethical crime without consequence, cyberspace, and a team of heroes that "stick it to the man" and fight the evil corperations. While this movie is somewhat atypical to cyberpunk as it is a more idealistic cyberpunk story (with movies such as robocop or lawnmower man being more traditional pessimistic cyberpunk stories) this is in my opinion the best "jumping on point" intro to cyberpunk type movie. If you like comics, video games, the 1980's, this is the movie for you. this movie is both optimistic and an overall great feel good hollywood movie. I can't recommend this movie enough go see it. and i wont even try to list all of the cameos and easter eggs in this film. not because of how many there are (although they are in the triple digits) but because that would spoil how fun they are when they appear.
Gods of Egypt was very very ok. Several things held this movie back. I wish the studio could have put just a little more effort into this movie, then it would have been good. There were things that worked. I cant recommend this movie but check out the scenes of Horus and Set transformed into their god forms, those are cool scenes. Unfortunately filler, annoying characters and questionable casting decisions render this movie below average. The problem with a movie like this is its not bad enough to riff on, but its not alright enough to enjoy as a popcorn movie.
I do not understand the bad reviews this movie is getting at all? Did marvel pay critics to trash this movie? I liked this movie. Overall I liked this movie. Yes it did suffer from some of the same issues that plagued Man of Steel, too dark, lots of dialogue felt like it was written for the trailers ect. But I felt like this time it addressed and fixed many of the complaints from the last film. It was dark, but it had batman in it. There was collateral damage where people died and got hurt but the film dealt with the consequences and fallout of those events, the kyrptonian air was stupid, so they cut out the middle man and reintroduced kryptonite. I liked how DC was finally able to embrace the craziness of comics with this movie. They didn't try to ground everything in realism and shy away from their universe or its characters. This film had so many easter eggs I lost count. I was sure Doomsday was gunna suck when the trailers revealed he was zombie general zod with elements of bizzaro and doomsday smashed together. But they fittingly paid tribute to his beginnings and origin in Death of Superman. Not to mention his energy powers were awesome and flying doomsday was scary. I liked that the heroes that faced him in this movie were the DC trinity and not superman and the worst super heroes the late 80's early 90's had to offer like in the comics. I also liked how doomsday wasnt a member of some weird other aliens that lived on krypton that where inhuman non kryptonians and doomsday was one of them. that was the same problem i had with the comics with the stupid birthing matrix that man of steel the previous movie also handled better then the comics. there was tribute paid the the dark knight returns in several parts that was also great. This movie was clearly made for the fans and that shouldn't be a bad thing. Some of the transitions with dream sequences and flashbacks is clunky and feels like a transition scene or two was cut. I wish Wonder woman had more screen time and got a bit more establishment with her backstory and powers. I also didn't like that Lex Luther was just the Joker with money. The coolest thing about Lex in the comics at least is that he is a villian whos calm cool coolected totally sane and rational, but is evil and will hid behind his money and resources to the point of being untouchable and this movie completely fails to capture that characterization. Now in all fairness hes played like the old lex luthor from the Richard Donner franchise and that is probably the Luthor people are used to seeing. theres also a scene where Lois gets trapped underwater that doesn't really make any sense. Superman and Batmans whole beef with each other also isn't terribly fleshed out. A friend of mine explained it tied in with the whole collateral damage thing but you never have the characters address this directly with one another. Superman never gets a chance to say "it was the only way to stop the bad guys, or why arent the baddies getting blamed". Im psyched for the extended cut i think it'll clear a lot of things up, I hope it doesnt get axed like the extended cut of age of ultron. I like it I recommend it I give this film an 8/10 a solid B -. Not perfect but not worthy of the bad reviews this film is getting. I hope it makes its money back and people don't blindly follow the bad inaccurate reviews and make their own decisions
