The Black Cauldron is a movie I had heard tell was ultimatley bad. But never found a copy to watch until I remembered it existed during the age of internet.
So I gave it a chance.
Positives - The Still background art was excellent. The Animated magical effects were also great to look at. Had that classic Disney Horror srinkled in the, infact of the most dark classics Disney hadproduced, and that doesn't even include the scenes that were removed from the finished film. Characters with melting flesh and such. Shame they removed it. A Villain that deserved a better film to host in. The Horned King had a nice design and feel to him and the voice was great.
The Cons - The are So many. The script is bad, the voice acting is mostly still. The characters are bland even when the narrative wants them to be interesting. The most interesting thing about the protaganists is that Gurgy the dog was clearly based on Smeagol from Tolkiens Hobbit/Lord of the rings; and Andy Serkis' rendition of Smeagol many years down the line is based on much vocal and physical acting Gurgy displays in this film... just done far more endearingly. It's mostly down to the script and the narrative though. Gurgy is nothing but a frustrating Character in this movie however, as well as all other characters. They all have something that could make them good characters, but they and the story fall totally short of substance.
I was severly bored of this movie all the way through, apart from the few moments of horror inspired tention and often taken by the background art or magical essence in it. But overall, despite gallons of potential, it is a terribly boring, badly written and unpolished film.
This film is to Disney as what Tales of Earthsea is to Studio Ghibli. Hollow.
It's very watchable... but at the same time you can'r help at feeling it's a load of crap at the same time. The script is dreadful and feels cheesey at times. It's more like a haunted fun house rather than a ghost / demon story. Especially near the end. Some great shots and scene, but overall, not amazing.
I finslly decided I was bored and depressed enough to give this movie a chance. and genuinley, I was worse than I expected. There is nothing gripping about this movie. Exposition is shoved down your throught in the most unimaginaitive way possible and doesn't even try and cover up loose ends. The acting is dreadful and...god damn Why am I even writing this, it's 2020 and this film was and still is bad.
This film is a movie that had to be made.
It is the horror I have always wanted to write.
The characters are unremarkable, they are just normal. Regular family that keep on being cursed by bad luck, hard times...and then eventually, witches.
Based on old Witch account journals it is very true to a witches trickery and what they live for.
It is Misery all the way through, to be warned... but when everything you do and say is dictated by your god and what men say h3e want's of you... what do you expect?
Filmography is excellent. The etymology is well researched. The script is believeable and well revised. The sound is brilliant. The use of old traditional horror tactics is excellent. Suspence is unerving.
This is not a scary film.
This is an EVIL FEELING film.
I have enjoyed this film three times and all of the casts acting.
I watched it to the end because I found it an endearing story... but I have to admit It gave you a little too much time to anylyse what there WAS to anylyse. It was pretty straight foward. Not really any big suprises. A lot of things were glossed over. So many heinous things happen that must have been in plain sight It was dumb that the charaters didn't notice them or question things more.
The more I think about it The more I think that 3 stars might be a little generous.
The overlong scenes of contant crying or moaning or chanting did not sence chills up my spine, or make me uncomfortable, or creep me out... It was just annoying.
I could go on, but heres the skinny on it...
Did you like the wickerman? Did you like heredetory? Do you like the idea of the only thing keeping characters there is that there are knowingly drugs in all the food, and no form of transport out in the middle of nowhere, Yes? Well the fact that no characters thought it was a good idea to just walk away from this place was mind blowing.
