Film as poetry. Beautiful, sad, affecting. The best new film of this past year for me. Honestly, nothing else is close. Frances McDormand is perfect in the lead. Chloe Zhao directs with skill and grace, mixing all these real life people into a film that feels part cinema, part documentary. A latter day The Grapes of Wrath, but with a style that is unique unto itself.
I happened across this documentary. So glad I decided to take a look at it! What an affecting journey. The bikers and their family stories of the Holocaust are personal and deeply involving. I was really moved by their shares and their journey. This is just an excellent doc. in every way!
When I was younger, there was a little mom & pop pizza place called Maria's. We all used to go there. This film took me back to that place and time in my life. When we are all young, lost but having fun. I'd go into Maria's to see my friends who worked there and just hang out. Northwood Pie brought back all those memories. It's a fun film but also very natural and lived in. I really liked the characters and a glimpse of a younger generation going through the same rites of passage I once did. I loved it!
A movie, a dream, a surreal dance. A really well done, beautifully shot and acted film. Strange, fun, suspenseful, poetic. It made me think a little of David Lynch. And you know if I compare something to David Lynch I must really love it! Watch this. You won't soon forget it.
I took a shot on this because of the positive reviews and because I love Aubrey Plaza. But ten minutes into the film I completely hated all the self-absorbed, angry characters. And the dialogue was so contrived! Like before the movie started, all the characters dropped acid and lost all ability to self-censor... just spoke whatever popped into their heads. I hated this film. And who sets the prices on this stuff on Amazon? Sound of Metal is free on Prime and that film was terrific from start to finish. This piece of garbage was 5.99. Going forward, I'm just going to rent anything on Amazon that costs more than $3. Otherwise, I always feel ripped off after. REFUND!!
There are so many predictable movies out there. I watch so many, I can usually see most plot twists coming a mile away. But with this film, I really had no idea how it was going to resolve. I won't spoil it here, but if you start this movie, you're probably going to get hooked and watch it all the way, wondering as I did what's going to happen. It's also a beautifully crafted film... writing, directing, acting. It had me in suspense the entire way.
I know people who deal with PTSD and bi-polar conditions. It's a daily struggle, yet so very human. This film does an amazing job of capturing that complex reality. Not by glossing over things or giving these characters a Hollywood treatment. But by showing them in a candid, mature, yet heartfelt way. It's all incredibly relatable, even to those of us lucky enough not to struggle with such difficult mental health issues. On top of all that, this is a really well made and acted film. And oh so affecting.
I've seen some wild movies over the years, but this one is right up there. Funny, strange, damn quirky and just a ball. A really crazy mix of sci-fi and satire. And wow, does it nail 2020 in all it's effed-up glory! Watch this one. I guarantee, you won't forget it!
I read about this two day shot film. It's a marvel it was done in that time frame. But even without that qualification, it's a terrific film. A wonderful blend of sci-fi with comedy/drama. It's vibe is feel good, heartfelt, but in a very sincere and affecting way. I love a movie like this that makes me care early on and holds me throughout. Just wonderful storytelling.
Delroy Lindo makes the film worth watching. There's an Oscar nomination in his future for this movie. As for the film itself, it's hit and miss. Really good, geuine moments... and other just plain bad and action cliches you see coming from a mile away.
Every day the news is off the charts depressing. So a little light and joy is really needed right now. This movie delivers laughs, friendship, joy, love... and just made me incredibly happy! A group of outsiders coming together make this cafe feel a little like the 80's sit-com Cheers to me. A place that makes you feel at home and laugh at the same time. Though Turnover is more family-friendly. But still, that same welcoming vibe. Featuring a great cast and story, this a sweet film, very lovingly made.
You don't see a lot of films that mix comedy, romance and sci-fi! But this film takes all those diverse elements and brings them together wonderfully. Funny, great twists, terrific cast. Big thumbs up for a really entertaining film!
This is a super-suspenseful, interesting, disturbing film. And an excellent addition to the found footage genre. It's a film that will make you uncomfortable. But in a really good way. The acting was excellent and I wondered throughout who was telling the truth... or if like Kurosowa's classic Rashomon, in no one was. The movie deals with the incredibly relevant subject of mental health. It's not an easy film to watch. But for the suspenseful ride and the points the film makes, it's well worth it!
Those are just some of the great qualities of wise Risa, the subject of this terrific documentary. Risa survived the Holocaust and made it to 100. But her story is more than survival. It's a beautiful portrait of a strong, life affirming woman. I loved everything about Risa. Her wisdom, grace, love of music and life. The film made me want to be a little more like her. Living life fully and with great joy. Bravo to Risa and to this fine film!
I thought just a little of What We Do in the Shadows as I watched this movie. Vampires, humor. But Vampire Burt's Serenade is way more out there, in a really fun way! It's bloodier, campy, and just more crazy. And there's vampire songs, kitsch, and just a really wild story! Clearly the filmmaker and cast were having a great time making this. And the film has a cool 70s-80s vibe too that I dug. I'm not always into horror, but this was a deliciously over the top romp. Well worth your time!
