Rainer's Review of Howl's Moving Castle
Howl's Moving Castle(2005)
I'm repeating myself, but, Studio Ghibli is so much better than Disney and Pixar combined!
Mastermind Hayao Miyazaki's vision is just extraordinary. Of course, he worked with source material, that provided him with just the right mix of fantastical creatures and likable characters, but what he has done out of it, is just amazing.
From the (way too) few films I've seen from him, Howl takes the number two spot right behind Spirited Away. For most of its runtime I was truly amazed, although some of the plot points struck me by surprise and were not very smoothly set-up. Also, I would have liked the get more explanation of how this magic world works, but the film was already so fully packed with plot and action that it couldn't afford the explanatory parts (it's already quite long for an animated film anyways).
Anyways, as I said, I liked it this way good enough.
One thing about these Miyazaki films I'm pretty curious about is, that their qualities are inexplicable. Yeah, the animation is awesome, but to be honest, I still prefer Pixar's Wall-E, the characters are partly annoying and partly just too silly to be taken honest, the villains in the end always turn out to be some huge abominations, and the plot lacks mostly real suspense. But, all in all, these films are genius. I think that's exactly what makes Miyazaki so good. He doesn't focus too much on one area but just creates the perfect anime package. His films are neither hilarious nor melodramatic nor thrilling but a little bit of everything and ingeniously balanced.
Enough said, Howl's Moving Castle will certainly not be the last Miyazaki I've watched. Pity, that they're so many awesome film makers...
