I see many reviews here saying the movie's saving grace is the understated, affected, or uncanny performance by Modine. This true (the sound track adds some grace also) but I believe in giving credit where credit is due. Much of Modine's, and other character's, dialog it taken directly from novel the movie is based on by Terry Davis. The novel by Davis is one of my favorite young adult novels of all time.
