Movie Ratings and Reviews

Dredd
Dredd(2012)

Just another Dark Knight wannabe

Rocky
Rocky(1976)
½

This film is great because it is not about boxing at all.

Looper
Looper(2012)

Hollywood tends to half-ass everything, and this is a half-ass film.

Cruel Intentions

this film fully embodies everything that is wrong with american storytelling and sodomizes real drama to no end

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

What a garbage film, but cheers to enduring friendships.

Stoker
Stoker(2013)

Not as stylish as Old Boy, but a thrill nonetheless.

Enter the Void (Soudain le vide)
½

A nightmarish voyeur where sadism is not optional.

Babel
Babel(2006)
½

A long and unmoving narrative

The Grey
The Grey(2012)
½

No poetry here, but it is a well-executed drama

Edward Scissorhands
½

I have never been quite in tune with Tim Burton's sense of humor

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky
½

Could've been a better movie if there was less blood...

Equilibrium
Equilibrium(2002)

One of the worst ideas ever for a film.

Ghost
Ghost(1990)

Quite entertaining

The Twilight Samurai (Tasogare Seibei)

The narration is very uninteresting, but everything else is quite a charm

Drive
Drive(2011)
½

Quite an atmospheric treat

2001: A Space Odyssey

Never been disappointed by a Kubrick film, the man's execution of originality is impeccable

House of Pleasures
½

There is a need for real dramas in the bordello, I don't particularly enjoy pretty pictures

Following
Following(1999)

An exceptional male fantasy

Hugo
Hugo(2011)
½

Let's say I have no affinity for happy-endings and boy geniuses, however, the film is well-made

Once Upon a Time in Anatolia
½

Great photography, but I was never engaged with the story.

American Psycho

Forget the satire, I like misplaced blood

Ran
Ran(1985)

The swirl of human lives is always a beautiful disaster...

Buried
Buried(2010)
½

The man and his coffin are not bad at all, but all the moaning and screaming are extremely annoying.

Headhunters
Headhunters(2012)
½

The film ran out of steam near the end, mainly because the villain has little genius to offer.

Finding Forrester
½

Too many unnecessary elements, not that they hinder the mundane wisdom of Sean Connery anyway...

Vanilla Sky
Vanilla Sky(2001)

It was decent until the end erased everything that mattered in the film.

Drag Me to Hell
½

Overrated piece of crap, trust Sam Raimi and you will suffer.

The Fall
The Fall(2006)

An ultimately disappointing fantasy about pretty much nothing. It's another one of those just-watch-the-trailer movies.

Lost In Translation
½

Sometimes, being lost is better than being found.

Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys)
½

A well-craft story that traverse between thought and reality amid social and political issues. And Brad Pitt is the best monkey.

Vengeance (Fuk sau)
½

There is something that Hong Kong gangsters just lack...

Elite Squad: The Enemy Within

Shot at a fast and fun pace, this film has heart-pounding action every second of the way.

Battle Royale
½

Memorable scenes of dark humor.

The Dark Knight Rises
½

Hey Bane, Joker wants you to know that he is still Batman's best friend.

Up
Up(2009)

Good introduction punctuated by a delightful death of a certain character, but the protagonist is too selfish and mean for his story to be heartfelt.

8 Mile
8 Mile(2002)

At least it wasn't cheesy, I only stopped by for the swearing and rap.

Total Recall
Total Recall(1990)

Total fun, not to mention Arnold delivers some classic punch lines with his usual poor acting.

The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos)

Men who wander into the wilderness, stay in the wilderness.

Point Blank
Point Blank(2011)
½

Terrible ending, nothing special about this French sucker.

Oasis
Oasis(2003)

Two strangely flawed but charming characters come together to form one of the most heartfelt romances on screen. If a girl is willing to endure this whole film with you, marry her.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted

Good general animation fun, lots of good laughs. For comparison, way better than effing Rango.

Snow White and the Huntsman
½

The first five minutes were decent, then sub-par acting along with awful pace crept in to ruin a decent idea. Evil was defeated without grace or passion, there is nothing to treasure here.

The Fighter
The Fighter(2010)

Neither inspiring nor sentimental, perhaps those are the downfalls of a Hollywood-produced "true story".

Inglourious Basterds
½

Sometimes Tarantino gets lazy, this is one of those times.

I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (Saibogujiman kwenchana)

The only Park Chan-wook film you can doze off on. Wild imagination needs to stand on excitement, this film failed completely in generating anything of interest to the human mind.

No Country for Old Men
½

One of the few salvations for American cinema

Seance
Seance(2000)

A supreme quiet brilliance, horror never felt so human and vulnerable

Amélie
Amélie(2001)
½

Finally, a feel-good without feeling stupid.

Sin Nombre
Sin Nombre(2009)
½

Without a compelling story and characters with depth, Sin Nombre is just a scenery viewing journey.

Marvel's The Avengers
½

Stereotypical Hollywood blockbuster: loud, shallow, and without any sort of urgency to ask interesting questions.

Brokeback Mountain

It's beautiful when men confront their own heartaches..

Happy Together (Chun gwong cha sit)
½

The usual Wong Kar Wai sentiments, a beautiful piece of brokenness

Rapt
Rapt(2011)
½

Solid thriller with excellent pace, perfect for the corporate minion near you

Santa Sangre
Santa Sangre(1989)
½

Santa sangre has some of the most visually provoking images that I've ever seen, it's an ambitious and stylish vision of the human imagination

Los Cronocrímenes (Timecrimes)

An intriguing work of time manipulation, if only the ending can be more refined...

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

This film probably has one of the dullest climax of children's cinema history. There is no magic, there is nothing to cherish. Why would you want Willy Wonka's factory anyway?

Cashback
Cashback(2007)
½

Even though the storytelling gives off a tasteful vibe, it was impossible for me to finish the film because I despise the protagonist's pedestrian vision on beauty.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

An exceptional family drama with a haunting grip, if only the storytelling was better and the transitions between scenes less awkward...

Irréversible

Explicitly intense with exaggerated emotions and violence, most people will vomit at some of the scenes. But everything is designed to excite, which makes the film enjoyable.

Sonatine
Sonatine(1993)

A class above Outrage but still too dull to thrill.

Ikiru
Ikiru(1956)

One man stands up against the world, the world wins, but the man embraces his draw.

The Scent of Green Papaya (Mùi du du xanh - L'odeur de la papaye verte)

Horrendous camerawork and unfitting soundtrack in addition to outrageously bad writing, nothing but an exposition of pretentious poetry

Outrage
Outrage(2011)

Nothing extraordinary can ever come out of the ordinary, a day at the office is simply a day at the office. Outrage is packed with style, but lacks even a hint of lasting flavor.

Monsieur Hire
½

Sinister impulses betray the most innocent longings, nothing is more tragic than a genuine drive to attain the unattainable.

The Housemaid
½

A story of power and lust with too little power and too little lust. A visually-striking ending is greatly handicapped by the lack of obsession throughout the film.

Limitless
Limitless(2011)
½

A poor success story of no consequences but to help one man to materialize his rubbish desires. Bradley Cooper speaking Chinese is quite epic though.

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

Loud and obnoxious, nothing more than an extended CSI episode.

Like Water for Chocolate (Como Agua para Chocolate)

Good food, like good sex, is made of magic, not spices

Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht (Nosferatu the Vampyre)

Much more haunting than any Twlight-inspired vampires, Nosferatu is memorable not because Dracula is a creep, but because he is more human than the rest of us.

Winnie the Pooh

a film beyond the ken of normal children, it is meant for the philosopher in every grown man

Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster
½

the exact same formula as the original ip man, albeit with worse acting, dumber villains, and sadly, forgettable fight sequences

Risky Business

probably a better movie if i was white-washed, can't stand all the hideous laughters

Leap Year (Año bisiesto)
½

a feast of emotions buried underneath every sexual fantasy, culminating in a genuinely tragic ending

13 Assassins
13 Assassins(2011)
½

not miike's finest work, but worth a look

Fireball (Muay Thai Dunk)

Shorten the pain, just watch the trailer.

Priest
Priest(2011)

one of the worst movies you can possibly see
