Jamie's Review of The Amazing Spider-Man 2
The Amazing Spider-Man 2(2014)
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is not a bad film. It's a good one. It teeters on the edge of being great, with strong direction, casting, and a great soundtrack. The movie is spectacular visually but unfortunately it suffers from what i like to call "Iron Man 2 Syndrome". IM2S is when, in a large franchise, a movie is used as a stepping stone to set up the further entries in the series, which is a necessity so you don't have to make 10 movies setting up the big ones, but the movie itself is brought down in quality and that's where TASM2 is flawed. There's way too much happening, much of which would be a lot better if it was expanded on (maybe we need a Peter Jackson Director's Cut) and not packed so tightly in an already full movie. These moments include the introduction of Rhino, which was completely useless in the film and is obviously saving time with his origin so he can just pop in the next film(s), and Aunt May's financial debt. Now although the latter is not a very prominent and exciting thing to elaborate on, it still would've been nice to see more of Sally Field, because she's a fantastic actress. Now, despite all the hurriedness of the film and the eagerness to split it into two, you can still no doubt enjoy the film. It has, like I said before, great direction, performances, and music, not to mention an emotional depth that a lot of Superhero films are lacking. The film picks you up, slams you down, disappoints you, surprises you, upsets you, excites you, it really is the definition of a mixed bag.
