Wow. A totally gripping, tense and moving film. My joint favourite of the year (with The Martian), and incredible acting from Larson and Tremblay as Ma and Jack. PLEASE let them both win Best Actor tonight!
I loved this. For me, JJ Abrams weaves the same magic as he did with Star Trek: managing to give a monumental old franchise a new energy and fantastic look while still pressing the right old buttons. The visuals are spectacular; we saw it in 3D, and what so impressed me was the sheer scale of some of the shots. Wonderful. The new characters are promising, and gave hints of some lovely future shenanigans... and the old faces brought a deliciously warm nod to the old, and a great link back to past glories. But Abrams is SO good at paying tribute to what we WANTED from this, that it felt more like an homage or remake! But I found myself smiling, because as it turns out, that's exactly what I wanted! The old jokes, ridiculous coincidences, predictable set-pieces, nothing out of place. Cracking stuff.
An enjoyable film, and a life-affirming and inspiring true story. The relationship between husband and wife is very well played, and the film is beautifully shot. Trouble is, Eddie Redmayne's trademark grin just got on my wick after a bit, and it left me with a sickly-sweet after-taste. He makes a convincing laydee though!
