This used to scare me so much when I was young, I couldn't even finish it. It starts off very strong. When I finally got through the whole thing, I felt ashamed for being too frightened to do so before. I eventually read the Stephen King short story it was based on and loved it. Watched the movie again and it is bad. Totally missing what made King's story so scary and intriguing. I pray it one day gets a shot to get the IT treatment. It did get a TV remake as well as 7 sequels. Of the 7 only 1 made it to theaters. Linda Hamilton is the only thing that makes this Cult Film worth a view.
Kristen Stewart and Chole Sevingy keep this dreary horror story based on The Borden Murders in 1892. Sevingy plays Lizzie Borden, a woman widely suspected of murdering her father and stepmother but was acquitted. The film just feels incomplete as it focuses on the relationship of Lizzie and her family's live-in maid, Bridget played by K-Stew. There is no levity or humor whatsoever in this movie. I suggest watching cartoons immediately following it. I do appreciate them staging it as a horror/romance story.
This is easily one of the most clever horror film ever made. Scary and funny, with lots of gore. It's as much a satire as it is a scary movie. Easily the most successful horror movie in terms of body count. You might think you know what this movie is about but you have no idea. The less you know going in, the more fun you'll have.
